Jimmy Savile, the eccentric television star and Top of the Pops host who was knighted in 1990, was a sexual predator who abused girls as young 13, an investigative documentary to be broadcast next week will allege.

Up to 10 women are said to have come forward to claim that they were sexually assaulted by Savile during the 1970s, when they were underage teens, and that their lives were "destroyed and devastated" as a result. The abuse, ranging from rape to indecency, is alleged to have taken place in public places, including schools, hospitals and the BBC studios where the entertainer hosted family-oriented shows including Jim'll Fix It.

Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy will be screened on Wednesday on ITV, weeks before the first anniversary of the broadcaster's death at the age of 84.

In a statement issued on Friday, the BBC said it had conducted extensive searches of its files to establish whether there was any record or allegation of misconduct by Savile during his time at the BBC but no such evidence had been found.

"While the BBC condemns any behaviour of the type alleged in the strongest terms, in the absence of evidence of any kind found at the BBC that corroborates the allegations that have been made it is simply not possible for the corporation to take any further action," it said.

A former Surrey police officer and child protection expert, Mark Williams-Thomas, will present the programme, which will reportedly include interviews with at least two women who have waived their rights to anonymity.

In 2007, police received a complaint from a woman who said that she had been indecently assaulted by Savile in Surrey, where the star was a regular visitor to Duncroft school, Staines.

The allegation was investigated but no further action taken.

So what's going on here?

Why are these people coming forward after he is dead when he can't defend himself? If they wanted justice why wait until he dies?
He was a peculiar man who lived his life differently to normal people so I wonder if he is just an easy target.

Or are these claims true?

It might be hard to rationalize or understand why someone would wait either so long or until the person in question is dead to come forward, it could come from many things we wouldn't comprehend without experiencing something so terrible. Possibly the fact that he is dead and can't respond to the allegations (if they are true), is why these women feel empowered enough to speak out now.

If it is true it is a shame they won't see justice done while he was alive but as you said we have no idea how they coped emotionally because of the incidents, maybe they were ashamed of themselves for years and maybe still are.

All just allegations at the moment of course

I suppose we either believe these women or we don't. Personally, I can't imagine why someone would say things like this after the man's died if they weren't true. However, as we can never hear his side of the story, they will always remain just allegations.

Not really. You can't get done for slander or libel once someone's died.

I could say George Best molested me, and nothing would come of it.

Well, perhaps something did happen, but they didn't want to bring it up while he was alive in case he was cleared of all charges. They get left looking like they've lied, with a damaged reputation, and still scarred from what happened. At least this way, they can't 'lose'.

Also, didn't he take out a super injunction many years back to stop something coming out?

Yes, that's why I said 'possibly the fact that he is dead and can't respond to the allegations'.

I have no idea, I really don't have much of a clue who he is, although I recognize the name.

Yes, I know the law on this - dead people are fair game, as it were. If it's all an invention, his reputation is unfairly tarnished for ever. If it's true, it can't be proved in a Court of Law.

I'm not sure what's to be gained by this, but if it IS true, then I could understand why these women would wish to make others aware of what happened, as he'd cease to be Sir Jim the charity campaigner and would become Savile the pervert.

Do you really not know who he is, Hectic?

He was hugely famous through the 70s and 80s. He used to be a Radio 1 DJ, he hosted Top of the Pops, he had his own prime-time TV show, he was closely associated with Stoke Mandeville Hospital and raised millions for charity. He was a philanthropic eccentric.

Jimmy always was very odd, definitely seemed like he had a dark side. Can you sue against the estate of a dead man in cases like these?

Obviously, if this is true it is terrible. I just hope these women are using it to get it off their chests and move on from it, and they do not receive any money from making the allegation.

Sexual assault victims often don't talk about the abuse until long after the perpetrator is dead or completely removed from their lives.

"Now Gary [Glitter], all he did was to take his computer into PC World to get it repaired.

"They went into the hard drive, saw all these dodgy pictures and told the police and the police then 'Oh we've got a famous person ... Oh my goodness, yeah we'll have them'.

"But Gary has not sold 'em, has not tried to sell 'em, not tried to show them in public or anything like that. It were for his own gratification.

"Whether it was right or wrong is, of course, it's up to him as a person. But they didn't do anything wrong but they are then demonised."

"If you said to that copper, what's Gary Glitter done wrong? Well nothing really. He's just sat at home watching dodgy films."

Ok....

Jimmy Saville was always a total creep and these allegations don't surprise me at all.

fecking hell, that's a bit of an indication that he wasn't right.

Personally he always made my skin crawl and I thought he was a bit of a wierdo, but I put it down to a warped sense of celebrity. Seems he was actually a wierdo. I'd give these allegations every chance of being true. The TV show will need some strong evidence to have been aired.

He had very weird mother issues too...

Obviously that doesn't make him a nonce but he was certainly one very strange guy.

Esther Rantzen seems to have gone against him saying he was a child abuser. But why wait till after he as died to bring this out.

Frankie Boyle has been making a number of comments on Twitter, such as

Frankie Boyle ‏@frankieboyle
The BBC made Jimmy Saville wear all that jewellery so kids would hear him coming , the same way you'd put a bell on a cat

I hate Frankie Boyle he is not funny and seems to think it is OK to make stupid and vile jokes when ever he wants.
The quicker this cretin of a man is forgotten about the better.

I never really like him , always found him a bit creepy.
They must be some pretty damning stuff in the program, even though he is dead I doubt if ITV would run a program that was bollocks.

Nope. I was born in 88, rarely watched TOTP or listened to Radio 1, or saw him on anything. The stoke and charity thing wouldn't have been relevant to me either.

Those Gary Glitter quotes are shocking. Even if he was best mates with Gary, for a man who worked in changing kids lives for the better Jimmy's first and foremost thoughts should have been about the children in those 'dodgy films'.

Though not guilty on those quotes alone, there seems to be a strong basis for ITV to pursue this. And, to be honest, in this case they are right to.

I reckon it is all true. They have no reason at all to lie. And that Gary Glitter quote is disturbing.

There's been rumours for years about Savile, some of them hoaxes/spoofs, and I often felt he was an easy target (he was considered to be strange by a narrow-minded public; he was part of the sometimes-laughable - in retrospect - 70's pop culture; his outlandish public image etc etc) but, on reading the similarities in the victims' accounts, I now have the feeling the rumour-mongers were right. It angers me to see the gravestone lauding his 'achievements'.

To be fair, I'd give a second glance at anyone saying what he did about Glitter, that is completely fecked up. Obviously it doesn't make him a pedo, but the quotes don't do the guy any favors whatsoever.

My Granny always thought he was a wrong'un. Dig him up and string up by his plums live on Itv yar!

That's the kind of shit you say when your mate tells you that he just finished watching The Wicker Man. Not child porn ffs.

On the Glitter thing. Savile was obviously of the mind that watching child porn isn't the same as doing child porn.

Of course, child porn has to be done in order to make the pics for people to watch, so pics are very harmful - which is so many people go to prison for having those pics nowadays.

And anyway, Glitter then went to the far East to abuse children himself and got jailed for it, so the argument is spurious.

Rumours have abounded for years about Savile. When I worked in broadcasting over 30 years ago, there were whispers about Savile but there again, there were whispers about other big names too. In that environment back then, malicious gossip was doing the rounds on a daily basis. Alan Freeman allegedly liked young boys, and John Peel supposedly enjoyed young teenage girls. Nobody really paid much heed to it except for one rumour from a very flamboyant queen named James, who swore blind that Ted Heath used to frequent Hampstead Heath. All very good for a giggle but nothing more. Now Esther Rantzen - who was a very influential figure back then - admits that there was substance to the rumours. Makes me wonder how much more of the gossip I heard back then was true.
