A cock measuring bomb went off in here.

He played well tonight, very consistent for such a young player in a role usually played by more seasoned CM's.

According to transfermarkt, Toni played 19 matches for our U19 team in the season 2006/2007. Aside of that, usually kids don't join the acedemies of the big clubs in Germany when they are younger than 16, unless those big clubs are within a realistic distance to their hometown.
Toni joined us when he turned 16, just like Alaba or Basti Schweinsteiger did, who then spent a couple of years amog our youth/reserve teams. So the fact that Toni, being the wonderkid he was praised for, was already good enough to make it into our first team after spending one year in the U19 and develop among the professional players doesn't make him part of our youth program?
Then Paul Pogba and Gerard Pique should count as Carrington products.

Not to mention Danny Welbeck ( Arsenal ), Danny Simpson ( Leicester ), Danny Drinkwater ( Leicester ), Jonny Evans ( West Brom ), Darren Fletcher ( West Brom ), Wes Brown ( Sunderland ), John O'Shea (Sunderland ) etc.....These are just the one's that are playing in the EPL. Mind, We've produced some of the best players ever in Scholes, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Ryan Giggs, David Beckam. ..

Full list of Carrington graduates playing in the PL:
Man Utd: Pogba,Lingard,Rashford,Fosu-Mensah,Johnstone
Leicester: Simpson,Drinkwater,Zieler (I don't count Matt James)
Arsenal: Welbeck
WBA: Darren Fletcher,Evans
Everton: Cleverley,Gibson
West Ham: Ashley Fletcher
Stoke: Shawcross, Bardsley
Burnley: Heaton, Michael Keane
Sunderland: O'Shea,McNair,Love,Januzaj (loan)
Hull: Alex Bruce,Weir,Will Keane
Bournemouth: Josh King,Marc Wilson
Crystal Palace: Fryers,Campbell
Watford: Cathcart

Probably forgot some players but doesn't matter.

This talk is hilarious btw.United and Bayern's academy are quite similar in terms of number of products playing top flight football.

You always makes these posts and end up running away when asked about the last trophies won by both teams.

When was the last time Dortmund won League and Manutd won the league?
When was the last time Dortmund won cup and ManUtd won the cup (not super cup btw)?
How many trophies did Dortmund won in last 5 and 10 years, compare that with ManUtd?
Biggest and richest club in the league or a club that has to compete against the biggest and richest club in their league. Which has more expectations and which is underachieving?

trolling at it's best

Scouting works different at a big club, then at a small team like Dortmund. You can't just scout in Asia or eastern Europe/France for some small players, and throw them into the first team, when there are class players already in those positions. It's a "benefit" only poor clubs or clubs with poor opponents have.
Youth acadamy? You really want to go for our youth academy? Our youth academy is lightyears better then yours..alone in recent years we produced players like Pogba, Pique, Drinkwater, Pereira, Lingard, Rashford and co. 5th choice youth players from us go into other Premier league teams (Burnley/ Michael Keane) and boss their defense. And you are coming with players like Passlack or Durm  hilarious.
Envy your players? You don't have a single player that would make our first team. We just bought your best player at a position we have around the least competition (qualitywise, not quantity). And he can't even make the first team. He was kept out of the first team by an academy product from our team by the way, before he got injured.:smirk:

A lot of things are not working as they should in our club, but those have nothing to do with the quality of our players or our academy.

With how Dortmund have set up this season he has a lot of responsibilities defensively. He has been the holding midfielder in the 4-1-4-1 formation for most matches. He has handled it well.

Obvious we are, still we won cup. Let's not assume that Dortmund are poor club. They are second biggest in Germany and still didn't win a lot in last few years.

I am amazed, that anyone who have watched Weigl play could come up with the idea, that it would be great to purchase him to play in a Mourinho side. His skillset is completly the opposite of a holding midfielder for the style Mourinho prefers, that it is ridiculous.

1. Julian ist not strong. Although he is tall, his weight is just 72 Kilo. He has barely muscles to fend off attackers is relying solely on his positional play to defend. But within a system, which drops deep, your positioning gets less important, because it is unlikely you cant get into the space with a small sprint. Only in a system, where the holding Midfielder has to cover a lot of space, his greatest strength in defence comes to fruition.

2. His greatest strength is his technique, which is quite uncommon for a number 6. Again, this is quite useful even in a more counter attacking side, but is not nearly important. Because the a player in this position has a lot less time on the ball in a counter. But in a side with a slower build up he is the key player, because he initiates the attacks and is the player with the most actions on the ball. The opposition has more time to get in shape and is able to collectivly press higher up the pitch. Then you need a player who don't looses the ball in an dangerous area. But in the Permier League, there are only three teams who have a higher pressing (Tottenham, Liverpool and City).

So why you think Julian Weigl is the best player as a holding midfielder for United? Has Mourinho ever used a player like him to his maximum strength? His Holding midfielders in the past were guys like Essien, Matic, Cambiasso, Motta etc..

The only exception to that were Xabi Alonso, but he is a player most famous for his long balls, something Julian doesn't excels at. For that you could buy Sahin.

So in the end, buying Julian Weigl would be the next new shiny player, who dissapoints all United supporters. Many will say, that he is just not good enough, as if a specific skill set is useable to the same extent in every setup. This transfer "strategy" is the root of all the waste of a shitload of money in the past and it is worrying me for United, that so many fans don't get it. As if you all have become Galactico-Fans.

This is a very good point and I would like to add another quality of him which helps him against physical superior players. Weigl is very good at drawing fouls against him and I don´t mean that in a negative way. He is not a diver nor is he overly theatric but his movement and body build allow him to position himself even in high pressure situations (either because of a rare bad first touch or because of opposing pressing) in a way, that the attacker has to go through him to get to the ball.

However, in here lies also a problem for the dreams of some here who like to see him at Old Trafford. These situations, which are called back in at least nine out of ten cases in the continental leagues or UEFA competitions, are simply not ruled as foul in the EPL. Because of that he is actually one of the rare cases of a term of what is loved to been thrown around here. Julian Weigl is not suited for the EPL and I don´t see that changing anytime soon.

Goddamn what a goal tonight(vs.Sporting).. A modern day no.6 player with that kind of a shot is sure to be on our radar. A young Carrick-esque, maybe..

Absolutely loved that goal. His productivity in terms of pure numbers (goals+assists) are somewhat low but that isn't his job, however I would like to see him try more of those shots. Brilliant player and wins so many fouls through his positioning and awareness.

now hold your horses! to attribute weigl "with that kind of a shot" is a bit of a long shot in its own right, as it was in fact his first goal for dortmund, ever, and it's not like he had been too close to it and/or eager to score at all.

Who do you guys think will become the better player: Kimmich or Weigl?
Very different players. Weigl is more composed and clearly the superior deep lying playmaker while Kimmich is extremely versatile for his young age. My biased heart says Kimmich, of course.

Another one whose very talented but gone under the radar a bit is Johannes Geis at Schalke. Germany seem to be blessed with midfielders at the moment.

They are both in the same quality bracket, albeit with different skillsets. Weigl is a new incarnation of Busquets, while Kimmich excels as a B2B/RB. Hope Josh doesn't lose his newly acquired scoring boots. 7 goals in the last 8 matches isn't shabby for player of his position:drool:

Geis is a slightly overrated set piece merchant. Don't see him getting anywhere near our NT. There's too much better competition for our CM spots. Weigl, Kimmich, Goretzka and Dahoud are the future, but Kroos and Gündogan are just about hitting their prime age.

Dahoud as well. We seriously need to dip into that German midfield pool next summer.

Both are examples of impressive german youth work. While iam surpised how fast and great Weigl step up was, Kimmichs good performances were obvious. He played good in the 2. Bundesliga, while Weigl wasnt even in the first squad of a lower table team there. Kimmich is very versatile, while Weigl reaches more and more a absolut toplevel for his position like his performance against Sporting. Though there will be some bad performances in his second year which would be normal, but this is not happening until now. I would take Weigl over Kimmich in a heartbeat but thats cause iam biased, and also cause we got another great youth player as a RB and we dont need Kimmich. My opinion is Kimmich should play as a RB, considering his strenght and the other solutions Ancelotti has in the squad for the midfield.

Well if Verratti's not on the market, we can definitely find Carrick's replacement in the bundesliga - Weigl, Dahoud, Goretzka, take your pick. Just need to move fast because Bayern snap these guys up like no one's business.

You probably can get them when they are old and then you can show them Manchesters Golfcourse.
Weigl and Kimmich is out of the question, I feel that Dahoud can be bought though. Altough with that ridiculously low buyout clause Bayern will probably be all over that.

Do you think he is defensively disciplined enough to assume a Carrick role with some maturity?

No. Dahoud is a player somekind like Gündogan. He is no deep laying playmaker like Weigl, more a CM than a DM. A #8, if you want to call it like that.

Hell no:lol: Dahoud is a CAM at heart, and lacks defensive discipline. That's why Schubert hasn't given him a lot of minutes so far this season.

Weigl was a starter for 1860 and if this taxi-incident wouldn't have happened he would have been their captain. So....yeah....

Besides the perma-injured Goretzka and the unfeasible Kimmich and Weigl is there anyone in the German league that would fit our need for a dm\holding midfielder?

But that were only some very first weeks in the season. Just wanted to point out that his rise was not so obvious before for me than the rise of Kimmich. Which just underlines that iam no professional scout and our scouting network and club policy is great. Also the move of getting Kimmich was a good one of Bayern. Stuttgart must be realy stupid to behave with his youth like with Kimmich. But all in all, 2 examples of how well youth work is going and that all over the country. What is added to that base is that the 2 topclubs of the Bundesliga were brave enough to implement these 2 boys and give them responsibility, even in tough games. Now they are getting paid back therefor.

How would it be to build your own like Bayern and Dortmund have done? ;) But to answer your question: Xhaka were interesting, but Arsenal was faster, (so much for the question of if buying only Popgba was a clever move). Sahin from us is probably leaving so take your chance.. Goretzka is great (mixture from a #6 and #8) and in my eyes it only needs good clubwork with professional training to get him solid (i dont expect that from Schlacke). Baier from Augsburg is good. Baumgartlinger just moved. Hmm,.. Geis? Maybe Bayern gives you Alonso? Could be that he plays golf, too. #greetingsfromSchweini
Ah btw: What about Schweinsteiger? If you realy are searching for a DLP, did Mourinho just forget about him?

Could you for once just try and respond without your customary twenty digs and aura of bitterness? Yes we bought Micky Targaryan from you, yes we have a lot of money, yes we play in the PL. Get over it or go sit in the corner of a bierstube and crywank.

You mean someone mature enough already to step into Carrick's shoes day 1 at such a big club as Utd? Sorry, can't think of one besides Weigl who probably isn't going to leave Dortmund in the near future.
We have a lot of talents, but they are still that, talents.

Elaborate please for those who have no idea what has happened.
For the context: 1860 is a club in absolut chaos. Back then their coach made Weigl the captain, him being 20 years old (?) and just rised from the youth. He was also in the starting eleven. Then some day Weigl was in a taxi and talking with others about how bad the club policy is and things bad about the club. The taxidriver was a 1860 fan and told it to some newspaper, the board was angry about that and they punished Weigl. He was no captain anymore and also were out of the starting formation.

Thats exactly the point: "not big enough for United", while Bayern an Dortmund showes how it goes: Have a plan in getting some young player, trust them, implement them to the surprise of all, develop them and half or a year later teams like United look at these lads and are thinking "we need a player like him, where to get?".

It was a non-issue. He and 3 other team-mates were out partying in a club (after a lost match? I don’t remember) and took a cab back home. While being in the cab, they said a couple of bad things about their club. The cab driver was a 1860-fan and ratted them out by telling the club bosses about it. They (and half of the team) had to play for the second team for 1-2 weeks and he lost his captaincy. He continued to be a starter afterwards.

It is important to mention, that 1860-München might be the worst run club in Germany. They are in permanent crisis for years, but are somewhat famous for their youth-academy. I agree with slig that Kimmich had a much higher profile, when he joined Bayern, but Weigl was highly rated by a club, that has a reputation for developing talents.
