Herrera has a good touch, he's quick and aggressive. I like him. Not sure how Vidal would work in a midfield two with him though. We'd still be clueless defensively.
I think LVG will sign Strootman or someone like him that is competent defensively.

Strootman is really a number 8, not in the same style as Herrera, but similarly a box-to-box player. They could play together, likewise Vidal, but Van Gaal would have to work with them on the training pitch so they develop an understanding so they know when one goes the other has to hold. It worked for Germany with Schweinsteiger and and Khedira, both of whom like to go roaming for the ball. When Bayern won the treble you can make a good case that Schweinsteiger and Martinez both played box-to-box too.

If you're gonna buy a 6 to play alongside Herrera you'd go for someone like De Jong not Strootman.
