They played tiki taka. Their unreal technical quality meant they could play messi as a false 9 and macherano at CB at it wouldn't matter. I dont see playing that good technical football this season. Besides, Messi and Iniesta were complete freaks who could take out defenders within seconds. Especially the former.

I find the idea of Rooney Ibra and Mkhitarian in 3 out of 4 places in attack a little lacking in pace.

The youth point is a fair one but I'd rather sell the likes of Young anf Fellaini to give Januzaj and co chances than refuse to sign a winger.
Well, I don't think Rooney should be in there at all. Ibra doesn't really have pace but I don't see that he will need to. Mkhitarian has pace does he not? And the spot you don't mention? Martial surely? So pae on the left and the right. Ibra in the middle - who will be just fine. Really Rooney is the weak link.

I see why players would give everything for this guy. Confidence oozes out of him
Despite the disaster that was last season for him, still you sense his confidence. Hope it rubs off on the players.

LOVED that press conference. There were some "gotcha questions" (Rooney's role, Giggs departure) that depending on his answer would've lead to sensationalized headlines. But he handled both very well, especially when he invoked his own experience leaving Barca to become a manager and relating that to Giggs. Other than that, typical Mourinho with his confidence. He wasn't arrogant like he tends to display. People haven't seen this level of confidence since SAF was manager because we all know Moyes was bereft of it and LvG went overboard and was more arrogant and demeaning in his pressers.

Late to the party but I really enjoyed that. Too long since we've had a straight shooter in charge. Really liked what he said about how he doesn't believe in taking 4th/FA Cup as a victory. No shit standards from Jose.

Very true,

Big difference in just playing youth for the sake of playing youth or giving chances to youth to prove themselves. You can give them the chance and if they mess it up then they shouldn't be in the team anymore. I don't agree with some people who think players should have alot of time to develop and proof themselves. You are at a level where you can get the chance for first team football and usually it takes just a few games or even a few minutes to determine which ones are ready and which ones aren't. For instance Rashford showed he is ready from the first minute and he'll keep getting chances because of that until he proofs the opposite, it is not in anyway different than with regular first team player to be honest. You get to play as long as you deserve to play and not a minute longer. The thing with youth is you just need to have the balls to put them into the team and throw them in the water, if they swim, that is good, if they drown then you know they aren't ready and you take them out.
Exactly - the Manchester United first team is not a development project. It is for the elite. If I was Mourinho and I was constantly being asked "are you going to play youth"? I would ask what youth??? Who specifically? Show me a youth who is good enough and I will play him. What do you want to hear? - Yes I will play youth...I will leave on the bench Ibra, Mkhitaryan, De Gea etc. and play youth. What is the point of that question to him!? Is he going to play youth!? Let's just play the best 11 we possibly can eh?

Shaken, and very stirred......
Jose played that bloody perfectly. If he had come out with that loud swagger (which some people here seemed to have wanted) I would have been worried. It would have been that Joe Hart singing the national anthem too loudly syndrome, all noise no product and undermining - . He underplayed the excitement of a job we all know and he kind of knows we all know he's wanted for sometime. He sat back and gave the aura of calmness, nervelessness and exuded a genunine confidence in the knowledge of what he wants and needs to do. No one will be protected, no one will be bigger than his objective.

It's the calm before the storm, because when the season starts and we lose a few games, feck me the volcano inside him will erupt, no doubt about that. And personally...I can't wait.

I think that the question, instead of "are you going to play youth?", it shld be "will you give acedemy players chances?".

I am eager to see, the likes of angel gomes, axel tuanzebe, ro-shaun williams, donald love, tfm, are they given any chances, at all, in this 3 years.

I dun really care about expensive youth bought with exobitant price tags. They definitely they their chance. I care more about the academy players.

He didn't shy away from telling everyone his opinion about Giggs that's for sure. Mourinho all his life had to work to get to the top, he wasn't even a top football player and got the biggest jobs there is in football, it's incredible really.

Love the bit about specialist positions to. He won't play you in the wrong positions just so you can get game time. Daley Blind got away with that because his father was mates with Van Gaal. That's not going happen at this football club anymore.

1. Jose said all the right things but the continuous digs at Wenger and other Mangers are childish and petty

2. I doubt his comments on youth will be greeted with excitement at the Academy. Whoever those 49 players are I hope he is not including expensive signings like Varane, Zouma
I actually like those digs.
It adds extra spice to the upcoming championship.
This is entertainment after all and having managers who have personal grudges against each other merely adds to the spectacle, on match day.

And lets not forget, Fergie had his fair share of personal spats with the FA, referees and rival managers.

The results on pitch are what count, though. Everything else is secondary.

thought that was a good interview. I suspect that some of his old habits will come through as the stresses of the season progress, but I was happy to see him speak the way he did. He was confident but stated the club is bigger than anyone, including him. He resolutely answered the question about Giggs. He said he did not want to just get 4th. He wants it all. Hope springs eternal.

Wish he'd shut up about Wenger
He's right though. Wenger is an anomaly in football. Even the great SAF wouldn't be able to avoid the stick if he wasn't able to win the EPL title for half a decade let alone 10 years

Having a dig once or twiceis fine but with Wenger its incessant and the obsession with Wenger is becoming pathetic. Its the same with Pep also because after winning the PL 1st thing he did was have a dig at Pep who was at Bayern.

Agree results are whats important and press conferences are over-rated because the same people excited about his pressertoday were equally excited by LvG's 1st presser

The digs at the other managers are par for the course. He actually can't help himself. As long as he keeps his press conferences within vaguely respectable boundaries then I don't particularly care.

Great interview. He handled the Giggs question very well, also the youth players as well. Loved the dig about not hiding behind a "philosophy" and considering finishing 4th a success.

Donald Love is absolutely woeful mate, he is no where near the other four you mentioned.

Academy players will get their chance if they are good enough, otherwise it is pointless like LVG and McNair, Blackett and Love.

I thought he came over calm, assured and confident as well as focused and determined, his answers on the Giggs and Rooney questions were pleasingly direct and without sugar coating.

Those weren't digs at other managers, why do people always want to take the worst out of some quotes? He was talking about himself and giving examples, I have no idea how could anyone see that he was talking about fecking Wenger.

He will criticise other managers once the season starts, no doubt, but why not actually wait for him to do it and then mention it and not pretend he did it today.

If he hadn't had so much success you'd think he's insecure the way he has to speak about other managers, can't help himself - Something obviously bugs him. I can't wait to see him and Pep lock horns over the next few years.

While that's true, the number 10s we have are Rooney, Herrera, Mata and Fellaini. So there's very little pace coming from there. Martial and Rashford are very quick while Mkhytarian are very quick, but I still think we could with a second really quick option on the right wing.

I think he says there are 4 that are priority which he definitely wants soon. He also says the market is still open after that, doesn't sound like just 4 additions only.
Hopefully.

Ibrahimovic is probably gonna get replaced by Rashford who is quite pacey and the 4th place is occupied by Martial who is as well is really pacey, but pace is not everything in the world, you can have as much pace as you want if you don't use that pace correctly. I think that our team, if we sign Pogba, is good to go for the next season, maybe we need a leader in defence, but you don't need someone in defence to organize the defence meaning that the defensive midfielder could organize the defence.

I don't really think that the winger spot is actually an issue, Rashford or Martial can go to the right wing if needed and Januzaj if he picks up form can play on the right wing, I think that we signed enough players for this transfer window and that signing more players they would need to adapt here and mesh in.
Not this coming season.

I hope Rashford and Martial stick to the LW and ST positions.

My thoughts exactly.
You have to remember that there are some fans who are happy with 4th/5th place, while giving youth players a chance.
Other fans (like myself), want us to beat teams, which means we need to play our best players.
LVG got fired for not beating enough teams (but managed to play lots of youth).

The nuance, the intelligence, the sophistication of his answers puts him miles above Giggs in my mind... and English isn't even his first language. I could listen to him talk for hours. So excited to see what's coming for the club.
