So he's not very good at using a calculator, but he's certainly one of the best midfielders in the Premiersip era, probably the one that we really missed out on.

Ricardo Carvalho

One of the Premiership's most underrated defenders by the media. Chelsea' sdefence struggle more when Carvalho's missing than when Terry's missing. The Premiership's second best defender behind Rio in the last three seasons. I'll be back with some more later...

Ian Wright

Ian Wright will be the first striker in my team. In his prime Wright was a class act, he won the Golden Boot in his first season by scoring 29 league goals. (Though, not in the Premier League ! )

Wright scored a total of 185 goals for Arsenal in 279 starts and 9 substitute appearances and he finished 4th in 50 Greatest Gunners list conduced by the Arsenal website.

Honours

Crystal Palace

* English Second Division (old) playoffs winner (1988/89)
* FA Cup runner up (1990).
* Golden Boot (leading scorer in English First Division Championship (old)) (1991-92).
* Highest goalscorer for Crystal Palace post-war with 117 goals. He is third-highest overall.

Okay I promise I'm not deliberately making an Arsenal XI here :lol:

But I am shocked that this top player still hasnt gone. So my next selection is the player who was a cnut, but he was a cnut because he was annoyingly good:

Robert Pirès

One of the leagues most incredible wingers, he was devastatingly effective in his arsenal years.

Ill add more later:

All the Premiership winning sides had a real tough tackling, hard-working midfielder in their midst...

United in the beginning years had Ince and Keane and then Butt. Since Keane left, we have somewhat not had the same tenacious guy at the centre of the park and until Michael Carrick came along, this was a real handicap. Our style has changed since his advent.

Arsenal have had Vieira.

Chelsea - Essien and Makelele.

With Ince, Keane, Vieira, Essien and Makelele are all picked, it was time to really dig deep and find that one other tenacious midfield strong man. I have made what would somewhat be perceived as a controversial choice for at least one reason - former Leeds player, notably. But, pick him I shall...

He won the Premiership with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and the next year gave a real impetus to Newcastle title challenge, until the advent of Eric Cantona's contribution with a string of 1-0 victories (and, of course, Keegan's famous given in). He has been nominated to the PFA Team of the year three times - as many times as Ince, and quite rightly so.

They don't get much tougher or more determined or more steely and highly dependable than David Batty in the centre of the park besides those already chosen. He's one player you did not want to see on the team sheet playing against you in midfield.

Didier Yves Drogba

Arguably one of the strongest and physically dominant players, let alone strikers, in Premier League history.

And he combines that with sublime skill and such an uncanny eye for goal. Can and has scored an inredible number of absolutely great goals in his short span in English football so far.

Mourinho really got the best out of him and that Drogba is virtually unstoppable. With back to goal, running from deep, from crosses, you name the condition and you'd always fancy the Drogba at his very best to give you an excellent chance of scoring.

Some truly wonderful clips of Drogba:

Controversial choice with Drogba's comments off the pitch and some of his antics on the pitch not necessarily making him the most popular character around. But, this is a guy you'd absolutely want on your side, when on the pitch.

Team Honours with Chelsea

  • FA Premiership: 2005, 2006
  • FA Cup: 2007
  • FA Community Shield: 2005
  • League Cup: 2005, 2007

Individual Honours

English Golden Boot: 1 (2006–07)
African Footballer of the Year: 1 (2006–07)

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, this should prove just an incredibly powerful, skillful and deadly strike force, with the capacity to unlock any defence.

Right I'm breaking the Arsenal Selection vodoo here and going for one of my all time favourite United players:

Andrei Kanchelskis

Kanchelskis signed for Manchester United on 26 March 1991 and made his debut in the final game of the 1990-91 season, which United lost 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

In 1991-92, Kanchelskis enjoyed many first team opportunities and helped United win the Football League Cup, although they were beaten to the Football League title by Leeds United. He proved himself as an able deputy to the considerably older Bryan Robson and Mike Phelan.

In 1992-93, Kanchelskis established on the right side of midfield, being a key part of the team who won the first ever Premier League title.

1993-94 brought more success as United won the Premier League title and the FA Cup, and Kanchelskis was now United's first choice right-sided midfielder, and their first "proper" right-winger since Steve Coppell in the early 1980s, as the previous first-choice player in that position - Bryan Robson - was more of a right-sided midfielder.

Kanchelskis was United's leading goalscorer in the 1994-95 season with 15 goals in 32 games (14 of them in the Premier League), but missed the final few weeks of the season due to a hernia and during that time United surrendered the league title to Blackburn and the FA Cup to Everton. United were also without the suspended Eric Cantona (who was banned for eight months after he assaulted a spectator against Crystal Palace in late January), while Andy Cole was cup-tied for the FA Cup games.

PL Stats:

Year Team Apps/Goals
1990-91 Manchester United 1/0
1991-92 Manchester United 34/5
1992-93 Manchester United 27/3
1993-94 Manchester United 31/6
1994-95 Manchester United 30/14
1995-96 Everton 32/16
1996-97 Everton 20/4

Honours

* USSR Top League Champion 1990
* USSR Cup 1990
* UEFA Supercup 1991
* English Premier League Champion 1992–93, 1993–94

Tim Cahill

Tim Cahill will be my first central/attacking midfielder. Let Wiki enlighten you why ;)

Cahill's transition into the Premier League was very successful; in his first season Cahill finished as the club's top goal scorer. He finished the 2004-2005 campaign as fans' player of the season
as Everton reached the Champions League qualifying stage ahead of cross-town rivals Liverpool. One of his best efforts came via a low angled volley against local rivals Liverpool, in a match Everton lost 2-1.

In October 2006, Cahill was named as one of 50 nominees for the Ballon D'Or. He was the first Everton player in 18 years to be nominated and was also the only player on the list from the Asian Football Confederation or from Oceania.

Honours / Achievements

* First Australian Man Of The Match at the World Cup Finals;
* First Australian to score at the World Cup Finals;
* First Australian to score at the Asian Cup Finals;
* Nominated for the 2006 Ballon D'Or;
* Oceania footballer of the year 2004; and
* First Everton player since Dixie Dean in 1931 to score in three separate Merseyside derbies at Anfield.

Cahill is also among my personal non-United favorites

I'll be left with Taibi or Dudek in goal now, but here we go:

Xabi Alonso

It's rather sad to see him play for Liverpool really. Wonderful player and obvious choice for me. Can't find a better holding midfielder in the Premiership apart from Carrick. His passing is world class, he can score goals from his own half, and is the man string Liverpool's play together. Without him Liverpool would not be so close to the top this season.

Best centerback in the world, if not europe.... according to some. Overrated by most Liverpool supporters, but underrated by United supporters. Hard working centerback, who can also be adapated in rightback.

Decided to complete my strikeforce by pairing Michael Owen with Jurgen Klinsmann

Klinsmann is one of the greatest strikers of all time - a true complete striker who scored goals from both inside & outside the box and with his head. Before arriving in England, Klinsmann had already played top level football in Germany, Italy and France. Many thought he was past his prime but he quickly proved the doubters wrong by scoring this debut goal with the famous celebration which poked fun at the media who had branded him a diver:

Part of the first wave of foreign players who came to play in the Premier League back in the mid 90s. He only spent one full season in the Premier League but made such an immediate impact that he was voted 1994/5 Footballer Of The Year. Klinsmann actually returned to Spurs for half a season in 1998 and helped save them from relegation.
Overall he scored an impressive 30 goals in 56 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur.

I delete my own threads when I'm tired.
My first defensive pick is Pepe Reina. No, he isn't a legend, and no, he hasn't won many 'proper' trophies, but he is one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Premier League.

This was a tough pick, but there aren't many people that I would bet on to make an important save at an important moment in a game. This guy is one of them.

Liverpool fans think he's the Greatest Goalkeeper in the World, and they're always right.

Arjen Robben

Robben is one of the finest out and out wingers the Premiership has seen, and was part of a dazzling front 3 with Drogba and Duff when Chelsea were unstoppable. Selling him was one of their biggest mistakes as he still continues to put in great displays for Real Madrid.

I need a striker, and they don't come much classier than Dimitar Berbatov.

Dimitar entered the Premier League fray in 2006, joining Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen. After settling in the league, it gradually became evident that this man was a class above his Spurs team-mates. Berbatov is the kind of player who has moments of genius, more often than most players. With sensational ball control and superb finishing, he would be welcome in any team. Some of his goals are just out of this world. After two seasons at Spurs, scoring 46 goals he has moved to United, where he continues to strut his stuff.

Marc Overmars

Overmars was best known for his successful period at Arsenal from 97-00. Known for his speed, "The Roadrunner" made 100 appearances in the league, scoring 25 times from the wing. He was an influential member of the 98 team that won the league as well as the FA Cup, in which he scored in the final. He became the most expensive Dutch player of all time after securing a 25 million pound move to Barcelona in the summer of 2000. Capped 86 times for the Netherlands, Marc Overmars was the real deal.

I need a goalkeeper, and not many goalkeepers have been as consistently good as Shay Given has. The amount of poor defenders he has had in front of him in his career should have consigned Newcastle to relegation years ago, but his superb form over the years has stopped that from happening.

Using location as a tagline: because I'm just not
Ashley Cole

Let me start by saying that I know that everyone hates him. And yes I know he's a cash chasing bastard.

However that should not detract from the fact that he is the second best LB in the country at the moment (after Patrice Christ of course) - has a reasonable collection of silverware having won every major domestic competition, has featured in the PFA Team of the Year multiple times, and has played in two Champions League Finals. Is a good crosser of the ball and is the only left back to have consisitently marked our own Ronaldo out of more than one game. I thought I'd get him now because there are really not that many more LBs available.

Arsenal

Winner:
FA Premier League: 2001/02, 2003/04
FA Cup: 2002, 2003, 2005

Runner Up:
UEFA Champions League: 2006

Chelsea

Winner:
FA Cup: 2007
League Cup: 2007

Runner-up:
UEFA Champions League: 2008

And christ I know this is going to make me even less popular...

Robbie Fowler

Yes we hate him. Yes he's played for the unholy three (Shitty, Leeds and the Scousers). Yes he's past it now. But on his day he was near unplayable. I was hesitant to pick him to begin with as I felt that he went sharply downhill once leaving 'Pool, but his scoring record speaks for itself. Not as trophy laden as Cole, but still has a reasonable amount.

494 appearances, 224 goals (that's top flight which is what we're looking at here - so that discounts his Cardiff goals but includes his joke spell at Blackburn)

Compilation (just mute the music, which I always associate with that awesome vid of the 1999 Champions League Final)

Outrageous skill

Winner
League Cup: 1994–95, 2000–01
FA Cup:2000–01
UEFA Cup: 2000–01
2001 UEFA Super Cup

Runner Up
FA Cup 1995–96
UEFA Champions League 2006–07

In hindsight I don't think I could have chosen more unpopular players (although I could still have made room for Gary Speed :P ). But then this isn't a popularity contest - it's about assembling the best team.

I choose Ashley Young, quite possibly the best English Winger right now. The highest assist ratio after Fabregas last season Young is a proven Premier Legaue player. A fantastic little player, Young has pace to burn and can put in quite a cross..

My next pick is Gael Clichy.

He's matured into one of the best left-backs in Europe since Cashley Cole's departure to Chelsea and was voted in the PFA Team of the Year in 2008. He was also part of the squad that went unbeaten in the 2003/2004 Season and also helped Arsenal to get to the Champions League Final in 2006.

Berbatov's strike partner shall be Les Ferdinand.

One thing this man guarantees is goals. He is the 5th highest scorer in Premier League history with 150 of them. Ferdinand scored 29 goals in his debut season for Newcastle and is a proven top level goal-scorer. He forged a great career throughout the years of the Premiership at clubs like Newcastle and Tottenham.

Ferdinand was also the first player to score for 6 different Premiership teams.

Carlos Tevez

If my team should ever need an important goal, you can bet your bottom dollar that Carlos Tevez will have a hand in it. Tevez gives 110% every match, and wont allow defenders an time on the ball. Single handedly kept West Ham in the Premier League, and its no coincidence that we won the Champions League for the first time since 99 when Tevez came. He's like a pitbull with a severe case of ADD. But he's fecking brilliant.

For my next pick, I wanted a defensive midfielder who would protect my star playmaker (Scholes) and I was suprised that this man was still available ... Emmanuel Petit

The left-footed Petit operated from a deep-lying position, equally adept at breaking up play as he was in conducting the style of his team's attack. The back-to-front floated pass was his trademark, unlocking opposing defences with razor-sharp accuracy. But the bedrock of Petit's game was his intellect and strength. His days as a defender ensured his positioning was impeccable and covering team-mates who had ventured forward came as second nature.

He made his France debut at the age of 19 back in 1990 and the best moment for his country came when he scored the third goal in the 1998 World Cup Final (see photo!).

He was a hugely influential member of the Gunners' '98 Double-winning side along with compatriot and fellow midfielder Patrick Vieira.

46 goals in 216 appearences doesnt sound like a lot, but in 01/02, he managed 17 goals in 39 appearences, and between 99-00 til 04,05, he went into double figures 3 times, and the other times, he got either 8 or 9 goals, which is pretty handy for a midfielder.

Nigel Martyn

It's time for a keeper and I have choosen to go for Nigel Martyn. He was a beast at all clubs where he played. Played a huge part in Leeds' success in the Champions League at the start of the Millenium and has since been voted into their team greatest team of all time. In 2003 he went on to Everton and became a hero with some magnificent perfomances that kept them in the Premiership.

Dennis Wise

A cnut, but he will be my midfield hard man !

Wise played as a central midfielder and was noted for his aggressive and highly-competitive style of play. In a career spanning over 20 years, he played for Wimbledon, Leicester City, Millwall, Southampton, Coventry City and, most notably, Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge, Wise won many trophies and became the club's most successful captain at the time.

Oswaldo Giroldo Jr., also known as Juninho or Juninho Paulista

To me, by far the best player of Middlesbrough over the whole of their Premiership years and certainly one of the very best in the Premiership years. He vindicated Robson's choice of him by taking Middlesbrough to two cup finals (League and FA Cups). It is unfortunate some of the prima donas that Middlesbrough had in those days could not make justice to this little guy's huge ability.

  • Doted with a terrifically low centre of gravity, twinkling feet that should be only second in to Cristiano Ronaldo's.
  • Such speed and dribbling ability with the ball, that are all so reminiscent of Ryan Giggs.
  • But Juninho, unlike Giggs was more geared, from an early age to play the role of an attacking midfielder, instead of a winger's.
  • He had penetrative powers second to none from midfield.
  • Excellent vision for the pass and especially the through-ball, which was almost always a viable alternative with the number of players he'd always pull around him.
  • He could make any defence creak and even breach on his day and he did it so regularly for Middlesbrough.
  • Him as an attacking midfielder was almost like seeing an arrow being fired into some fabric that had almost no chance of holding.

One of the players I was most sad to see not sign for us when Le Roi retired... There was great talk of him joining us as Cantona's replacement in view of Middlesbrough's relegation that year (where 3 deducted points played a crucial role). For SAF, Juninho was always going to be first choice, if he had agreed to come. It is only upon his refusal to come (citing notably the fact that he wanted to play in a league where he'd be more in the limelight for Brazil's head coach) that he ended up signing for Athletico Madrid and we ended up signing Sheringham. Admittedly, I was not sad at all to have signed the latter, but, I think the excitement of the anticipated signing of Juninho did outweigh the excitement of signing Sheringham.

Achievement in England

  • League Cup Winner - 2004
  • League Cup Runner-up - 1997
  • FA Cup Final Runner up - 1997
  • FWA Player of the Year - Runner-up 1997 (behind Zola)

This last award he got is so impressive. Being with a club that actually got relegated and yet only be beaten to FWA Player of the year by the master Zola is a tremedous credit and can't be admired enough.

As can be seen from the following tube:

  • Speed;
  • Skill;
  • Control;
  • Runs in the box;
  • Excellent finishing in the box...
  • Or from outside;
  • Zidanesque close ball control;
  • Eye for the pass.

Juninho is my attacking midfield choice alongside David Batty.

Although some were already shown above, here is a collection of his goals for Middlesbrough:

O how he'd have relished playing for us and how he'd have made his teammates relish and, most of all, how he'd have made us the fans truly drool... It's a case of if only... :(

Brad Friedel

It is only unfortunate that it had to be the 2000 Blackburn team that was able to give Brad Friedel his real chance in the Premier League, because he deserved a team with a better defence and especially a better strike force to win more games. This is what Friedel is all about:

  • A keeper you know was always going to be a true Rock of Gibraltar at the back for you, dependable as ever for two reasons - it's no secret that he is currently continually breaking his own record for most appearances in the Premier League, but especially because Friedel can hardly ever be recalled having conceded any howler.
  • Superb shot stopper, commanding in his penalty box on dead balls and crosses.
  • He's a keeper you'd put on your team sheet without batting an eyelid if you had him in your lineup...
  • He has so often kept his team in any game single handedly.
  • Superb concentration throughout the game.
  • Agility of a big cat.

In brief all you'd ever want in a keeper...

Plus, after Peter Schmeichel, he's the second keeper in the history of the Premier League to score a goal for his team:

Honours while in England

  • Blackburn Rovers Player of the Year - 2002-03
  • Member of the PFA Premiership XI - 2002-03
  • Most consecutive Premier League appearances - 175 (as of 27 January, 2009)
