Starmer is done. Just a question of when.

Boris will remain and probably call an election whilst Labour have one of their six month self flaggelating leadership elections, now the Fixed Term Parliaments Act is toast.

It is what I would do.
How on earth is Starmer done, but Boris remains, one is actually a criminal rught now (Boris), and one isn't (Starmer), to my mind, the actual criminal should be done and he should resign.

This is true, but people can still be gullible. DT (for a while anyway) mastered the trick of using social media.

However the mantra of the British left in blaming the right wing media for hoodwinking the public is a long and well established tradition (excuse) for its failed dogma and its own inability to communicate effectively with the people it claims to represent.
The one thing I would accept about the (basically) right wing press, is its ability to distract the political antenna of the left and in so doing this provides enough cover so that lots of readers of the popular press begin to feel its not worth voting.
How do you think political movements can communicate effectively when there is an obvious media bias?

It's quite the mental gymnastics you are pulling with your post.

Boris remains because there is a war on, or because there is a cost of living crisis, or because people don't care about his law breaking.

The Tories have shown over centuries that they can and will do anything to stay in power.

Voters here are small c conservative.

Despite New Labour being despised by everyone that was the longest period of non Tory rules since 1763.

"Starmer must go because he lied. Boris must stay to fix the country and win the war"

The surprise for me is how Labour has ever won an election given the media.

We are not involved in a war, the war is between two countries not named the UK.

We have previously changed PM's during actual wars involving us, so that line os completely irrelevant.

Boris needs to resign, Starmer is irrelevant, Starmer never lied to Parliament Boris and Sunak have done, both should go pronto.

I don't disagree. I was pointing out the reasons that will continually be made until Starmer goes. We have a Prime Minister who doesn't know how many kids he has, has cheated on every partner he has had, and built his career on telling lies. A £50 fine is nothing to him, and his allies in Parliament and the media have shown they will do anything to defend him. If we had as much left wing media in this country as right wing, maybe Starmer has a chance. But we don't. So I think he is done.

The Sun flipped to Labour in 1997 and moved back to the tories later. The Express followed, as did the Times. Them moving back coincided with the years of dominance we have now which isn't a surprise unfortunately.

Geppetto has outdone himself with this new wooden boy.

So how then does Labour win a General Election?

How does a socialist get elected PM, since that hasn't happened to date either?

We have had three people lead Labour to a GE victory in 77 years.

The Tories have had three people in the last 7.

Where should we have gone as a party after 2019?

Exactly where they are, wallowing in the filth they gleefully created. Starmer's political career potentially ending at the hands of the right wing rags he's been renting himself out to is absolutely poetic.

feck the Labour Party.

Starmer should resign. Anything else is total hypocrisy.
I still don't get why people miss the point. The calls for Boris to resign are not because he attended a party, they are because he lied repeatedly at the dispatch box about there being parties and only apologised as the fact emerged.

Starmer did not lie to the house on this.

This attempt to downplay an absolutely damning display yesterday by the Tories could really misfire. If they don't acknowledge the voters message, then those same protest votes could stay away at a GE. Make no bones about it, these results are as bad as they realistically could have been..

This is total head in the sand moment from the Tories and it's disconcerting to say the least how the media is following suit.

Narrator: it didn't and in the 2024 general election Boris Johnson's Conservative Party remained in power, albeit with a significantly reduced majority.

Boris has repeatedly broken the ministerial code, why has this not been brought up by anyone in Parliament??

Can anyone explain why there are large discrepancies in the election results between sites like the BBC and Financial Times

The Financial Times has Labour winning 264 extra seats (142 in England), BBC has them winning 137 (51 in England). It's a similar tale in reverse for the Tories, with BBC saying they've lost just shy of 500 and the Financial Times saying it's actually just under 400.

Its not the medium, its the message!

When I was a member of the Labour party, great effort was made not to talk over, or to the back of peoples heads, not to flog the dogma, to appreciate the issues (even when they seemed trivial) what the people wanted to talk about not what we were selling, it was in effect 'cold calling' because we knocked on peoples doors even when there wasn't an election of some sort going on. It started to work in the sixties (perhaps it was 'flower power?) and Harold Wilson formed a government initially with a majority of four. Then Vietnam kicked off big time and Harold refused to get involved, from then on everything went 'wonky', (always a suspicion of dirty tricks and disinformation from the Democrats in the US, but never really proved).
After that the Labour party went totally 'politically ape shit', left and right wings, battling each other (quite often in public) parties within a party. Even then, the whats now called'red wall' constituents, stayed true, but (and this is purely personal) knocking on doors became less and less effective. We were losing the soul of the party and replacing with political dogma and worrying about the worlds problems, but not our own people's day to day lives. That's when I left.

The Tories eventually gave Labour a break and committed political suicide over Maggie; however Labour still went further away from its natural base even when it was in power. Blair talked a good game had some success in NHS waiting list s but got into a lot of problems with its grass roots (on both wings). However Brexit and immigration were the final hurdles where Labour fell out with its long term supporters.

Yes there is a media bias, but by letting it become the scapegoat for Labour's failure it doesn't bode well for the future, the media is not going to change anytime soon!

Whilst I agree with nearly all of this, the left and right wings of Labour have always been at each other's throats for decades before Wilson.

Wilson's skill (and Attlee's) was somehow (for the most part) keeping the civil war from breaking out and keeping both wings fairly happy.

For example, Herbert Morrison launched a plot to depose Clement Attlee after Attlee had won a landslide at the 1945 Election.

As Labour have been clearly two parties within one for so long why do they not split into separate parties. On the other hand, presume one side needs the other side to stand a chance of getting elected.
The Tories are also split, more moderates against the extremists - same applies.
All seem stuck in the past.

IF fined, he absolutely should resign. Also would in any normal world deal a major blow to the tories for not resigning after their fines...but no doubt would be spun by the press

For future reference:

"When in opposition, election of a leader usually takes place at the annual party conference. While there is no official mechanism to call an emergency conference before an annual conference, the NEC has the power to do so.

If the leader becomes permanently unavailable when in opposition, the deputy leader automatically becomes party leader on a temporary basis until the NEC decides whether to hold an immediate ballot, or wait until the next party conference. The NEC also decides what powers are available for an acting leader to use.

If both the party leader and deputy leader become permanently unavailable, or the post of deputy leader is vacant, the NEC will conduct a postal ballot of Labour Party membership to select a new leader. In the interim period, the NEC may appoint a temporary leader in consultation with the shadow cabinet."

Labour's Annual Conference will take place in Liverpool from Sunday 25 to Wednesday 28 September.

Starmer did say Boris should resign because he was under investigation.

but now he’s under investigation it’s let the police finish the job

pretty hypocritical

They'll just ignore it and it will be gone away in 3 weeks

The UK public will vote Tories at the next GE

Yes of course, but I was talking about my own level of awareness, I was a much younger man in the 1960's, possibly naive.... not the grizzled old 'sage' who nowadays is happy distributing his wisdom to the red cafe pages :)!!
