So who do we fancy as Swine's tiger's bromance partner?

No other Germans in our squad, so I'm going to go with Blind.

I was very pleased when the rumoured fee was a bit smaller. £14m still isn't bad for a player of his calibre, as long as he stays fit enough to contribute meaningfully for at least a couple of years. With Schneiderlin seemingly close to signing as well, we've suddenly got quite the depth in central midfield!

It's hard to explain this from Bayerns pov for me. Because when fit Schweinsteiger still easily is a world class player imho, he also seemed to be high up in the team's hirarchy and Müller aside he was probably the most "Bavarian" Bayern player. Bayern don't even have a great replacement for him and the reported fee (while probably okay-ish given the circumstances) is far from generous.
The only explanation that makes sense to me is that Schweinsteiger forced his way out, which makes you wonder if Pep/Alonso played a role.

Missed 50 games in 2 years due to injuries. For Bayern, considering his age, they may see this as the start of his decline, find that unacceptable and see United's interest as the perfect way to move on but still give a Legend his due. It's not like they don't have a capable replacement or can't just go out and buy whoever is going to be the next top German midfielder.

Well if his injuries were something chronic, then United probably wouldn't have bought him? And who is this "capable replacement"? Alonso who is even older than him and imho simply not as good/past it at the highest level? Rode who is a decent squad player but not world class? Kimmich, who just joined them from a 2. Bundesliga side? Javi Martinez who isn't nearly as good offensively and missed pretty much an entire season? And you can't just bring any talent in to replace him. Someone as complete and good as him will be very hard to find.

You seem to have done OK when forced to do without him for the past 2 seasons ! The way Xabi plays means he has another 1-2 seasons at the top level, more than enough time to groom/find a replacement for him and Schweinsteiger. Do you seriously think BM would let him go without a replacement plan in place ?

People have been crying out for some steel in our midfield and now we have Schweinsteiger and schneiderlin in there. We actually couldnt have asked for anything more. Lining up next season with such a dominant midfield is going to be truly exciting.

We could ask for a little more, just a photo of the glorious bastards wearing the shirt!

First of all I have to say that I'm not a Bayern fan myself. Bayern have done very well but if you look at where they were coming from when Pep took over they lost way too many important matches in the past two years. Xabi may be good enough to do quite well against most domestic sides but I don't think he should start against teams like Real or Barca and ultimately those are the matches for which Bayern have to build their squad.
Obviously Bayern will have some idea of replacing Schweinsteiger but that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't lose quality, especially in the short term.

I'd very much like to see one of those pictures of him holding the shirt some time soon. I'm getting impatient.

Just waiting for the announcement. Was expecting something around now. Would be fitting to time something just as the NYSE opens and while we're flying to America. No better way to hype a tour and boost share price than your own very positive PR.

Whilst I'm not suggesting they've paid for it entirely, I wonder if Adidas have subsidised some of Schweini's salary here. Louis would have fancied the move, I have no doubts about that, and maybe it's the cynical side of me that's over-analysing things with professional experience but everything is too convenient and adding up too well for our new Adidas deal to be endorsed with the German captain...

Why would they? Bayern are sponsored by Adidas anyway

I think I'll use the first photo of Schweinsteiger in a United shirt as my designated bash material tonight.

I'll actually try to get myself aroused with the sight of it. Never done before, but enough bashing to the euphoric realisation of this signing just might pull me through.

I'll check in on my progress later this evening.

Well aware of that but their standing in Germany and Bavaria is never in doubt.

With this they get a new poster boy in their local territory and add the World Cup winning captain to the biggest club in England and one of the biggest global brands in sport, just ahead of their U.S. Tour, directly against Nike's home territory with a club they took over sponsorship from Nike for and where Utd have huge traction already due to other sponsors etc and get a 3 year guarantee of exposure for him alone. 2 huge sectors they would love to cement themselves in further. Never mind our exposure in Asia and Africa.

Commercially it's a gold mine.

Shame the new kit isn't out yet, I'm guessing this guy would sell the shit out of it in the US tour.

Of course we lose quality with Schweinsteiger leaving. He's irreplaceable. Same with Ribery's decline. It might take half a decade or more until we have someone who's comparably great. It's how it is, not much you can do about it other than trying. And we definitely are trying, we've several fantastic midfield talents in the squad (Kimmich, Hojbjerg, Gaudino) and one of them needs to step up soon, just like Alaba, Martinez and Thiago need to stay fit. Alonso isn't even a shortterm solution anymore. If he's more than an option in the rotation who can help out if too many of the others are missing, then we're fecked again. Just like we were last year in the CL.

Schweinsteiger always talked about wanting to play in England and despite the myth on the Caf that German players never go abroad, great German players actually almost always went abroad at one point in their career. Basically all our midfield greats did; Breitner, Netzer, Matthäus, Sammer, Effenberg, Ballack. There wasn't much we could do but accept that Schweinsteiger found a perfect moment to look for one last big challenge in his career. I for one fully understand that and wish him all the best.

Nothing is so common as the wish to be remarkable.

Who among those three do you expect to make an impact this season?

I'm a big fan of Kimmich, could see him being further in his development than most people believe. Not entirely sure if Höjbjerg stays or goes out on loan again.

I hope none of them makes an impact though. I hope Alaba, Martinez and Thiago stay fit for a full season for a change and become a fecking awesome midfield trio. They're such a wonderful combination. All three offer something different but are relatively complete for their positions. If that happens, we might not even miss Schweinsteiger. But then, it's pretty unlikely that all three stay injury-free :(.

You don't want to start Alonso anymore :D Those 3 would be pretty formidable although I imagine the choice for pivot would still be Alonso for Guardiola.
