Gio, i saw what thread you were looking at. I knew that must have been an inspiration after those picks.

Let's turn this in to the "what's Gio looking at?"-thread since not much is going on. He's currently scrolling through the "who's the greatest bald footballer of all time?"- thread.

I'm at a cross roads at the moment. Most players left aren't well known in the grand scheme of things and I am wondering whether to go attacking or to go sensible.

Then you've definitely got my ace up the sleeve on your list
Probably. I've got way too many players on there and no way to determine who was better then who other then contradictory lists. That's also not including the load of right wingers I just got rid of.

I have so many players on my list. Over 100 and I don't know 95 of them.
You don't have to know 'em - just how to sell 'em.

I have never watched a football match in my life - I just go by stats and word of mouth. Has worked out brilliantly for me so far.

Are Theon and Gio altering birthdays on wikipedia? We should double check their next pick, just to be sure. It would explain why it takes so long to make a decision.

Every part of my research includes wiki, then googling "player X pes stats" to see what they have to say about them.

I haven't stretched that far enough to using them in match threads yet. ...But I've sent Pat a fair few links from there

We'll take the greatest Pole of all, even better than goal-grabbing greyhound Greg Lato, Anto spunk-receptacle Zibi Boniek and Graham.

Kazimierz Deyna

3rd in the Ballon D'Or in 1974, behind a couple of other blokes called Johan and Franz, (and 6th in 1972 and 1973), Deyna was one of the greatest European players of the 1970s. A household name had he not been born the wrong side of the Iron Curtain, the languid Pole shimmied around opposing midfielders like Zidane and passed like Platini. That meant Deyna often had to show off his talents for the national team, where the silky midfielder rattled in a mightily impressive 42 goals in 97 appearances.

Brian Kidd said:
“He was sublime. So elegant. Such an excellent manipulator of the ball. He had so much guile and sophistication. People talk about the technique of the influx of foreign players these days. Kazi was way up there.

That is shameful. Everybody knows Wiki isn't a reliable source.

Yeah, we've had the PES debate before.

I think it's a waste of time, myself - not least because I actually used to play the Pro Evo games.

1. The stats themselves are parameters which make sense for a computer generated "player" in a video game. They're not a reflection of the actual, historical player's characteristics and abilities. They're loosely based on the latter, obviously, but the key term would be "loosely".

2. The people who tweak the default stats (which are based on God knows what) - or create the stats from scratch - are not necessarily objective. Some of them probably are, but even the more objective ones may be idiots.

3. The serious contributors on that site are people who take the GAME nature of the thing into consideration: They tweak the stats in order to make the players more "realistic" within the game. The latter being absolutely the key - it's a GAME.

4. They have older players in that database of theirs whose stats are based on very little - and which have been contributed by people whose opinion on the player in question has gone virtually unchallenged.

5. Using numbers in the way they do is deceptive and ultimately detrimental. It leads to over-simplification and creates a false impression of exactitude - in areas where the qualities which should be measured are per definition (and common sense) not exact.

So, fun though it may be - the PES shite should be considered a no-go for us. It's no substitute at all for watching available footage - or even for reading up on players in available written records.
