I think he's still our most important player.
We have Ibra, Pogba, DDG. And you think Martial is our most important player? :houllier:

I said this last season: in our 1999 team, Martial would not even make the bench. Pogba, DDG and Ibra would all be in our first team or on the bench, in that 1999 season.

Martial was our best attacker last season. But last season all our attackers were average - poor.
For a 20 yr old, Martial did great. But if we remove age from the equation, Martial is not our most important attacker, let alone the most important player.

With regards to yesterday's game: I think he did fantastic. Every time he got the ball he aimed to either score a goal or create a goal. This is what I believe attackers should be doing.
Along with Pogba, for me, he was the most exciting player to watch yesterday.

For anybody comparing Martial with Memphis -

I think he's still out most important player because he's still our most creative one imo. No one in the squad offers what he gives.

This guy is top class and a special player. And every game he is improving. His dribbling ability is second to none.
We hounded Nani for being the creative force and trying things, which is difficult in this league where the space and time on the ball is very less.
I hope we dont give the Nani treatment to this guy.
He is the only player with pace in our front four, so a lot of times he has to turn back to look for support as none of the teammates have caught up .
Having said that, I think our team is still in the early phase of learning how to attack after nearly 3 years , which is impossible to master in 3 odd games.
I want to see a front four of Martial,Lingard,Mkhitaryan,Rashford in September in one of the cup games
I think that front four would cause absolute havoc.
And please dont compare Martial with Memphis :nono:

First of all, we didn't give Nani any wrong treatment. The difference between Nani and Martial is that Nani lacked a footballing brain and Martial is very intelligent in the final third. Nani was what he was because of himself not because of our treatment.

Also, no one is comparing him with Depay but starting Depay ahead of him might be a strategy to set his head straight. I don't think I am in favor of that but I haven't read a post that says Depay is better than Martial.

Well even when Nani lacked a football brain he scored, assisted and had more ability than Depay has ever shown. And If Martial's head aint right which I dont think is true at all, Id rather play Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Lingard ahead of Depay on the LW.

Some of you need to realize that Martial's role has massively changed. He was the main attacking threat last year and got multiple opportunities to run with the ball. The team also played a very different system. This year, Ibra is the main threat. In a 4231, he is pushed far wider since Man Utd is playing with 4 attacking players as opposed to 3. Pogba also is taking a lot of touches away from people, including Martial.

It's an adaptation period to the tactics, his teammates and his new role. He's 20 years old. He doesn't have the experience to fall back on so he's learning on the fly.

He needs to get his shot off quicker. Once he gets into the box he needs to open his body up and decide what he wants to do. He does all the hard work with good first touch and getting space away from defenders then daddles for that half second, which is more than enough time for a block/tackle.

It was apparent last season too. That's why some people say his 'finishing' needs improving. It's more decision making because a lot of his scuffed shots are because he's put himself in a rushed situation.

Just me or has he massively lost weight? I remember he was kind of bulky. Or is it just the Old Trafford camera angles?

The best chance he had he had a great first touch to open up an angle, then took an extra touch he didn't need. It's just a lack of confidence. You can see he's not happy. He's trying and things are not coming off.

It doesn't help that we don't operate with anyone on the right wing, apart from the full back. We lack balance. It's predictable that we'd attack from the left so it gets more congested there (and we've fewer fast outlets)

Also don't get how some conclude that Memphis is shite. He's had one season. Come on.

The second paragraph is just off from the shooting quicker". On the topic, I pointed out earlier (in this thread or the old thread) that Martial's finishing is still very limited. He pretty much most of the time looks to use inside his right foot. The chance when he beat Cedric (?) by pace he has option with his left foot, or poke the ball with his toes, here he took the extra touch and try his inside his right foot and got blocked. The cross from Ibra, he got he right first touch but again waiting to position a finishing wing inside his right foot and the defender recover and nicked the ball away. It's not entirely confidence thing here, but the lack of imagination in his finishing.

You must have watch a different games, we are as threatening on the right side with Valencia on good form dominating 1 vs 1. Zlatan movement off the right, Rooney assist... Martial had fair bit of support from Shaw and Pogba. It's not like he was isolated or he's shot in confidence and lost in game. He was decent and had bright moments. The problem is only with his finishing and that's it. This problem is traceable back to last season even when he's on good form. He just takes long to pull the trigger and his finishing mostly was this inside right foot.

Actually it is imo. He has many ways he can use to finish and I saw him do it at Monaco. Left foot, right foot, header, inside of the foot, outside of the foot, volley, overhead, etc. What he did in this last game is default to his most comfortable finishing technique... the inside of his right foot. He defaulted to his preferred method as opposed to the most suitable one, despite having the arsenal. That shows lack of confidence in his overall game.

The issue with his finishing at Monaco was precision and effectiveness. I felt he was trying to be too spectacular at times there when it wasn't necessary. Missed on opportunities because he didn't play it simpler. I don't see the same thing at Man Utd.

The big thing he needs to work on is his long range shooting. He just doesn't hit the target anywhere near as much as he should on those. You can almost let him take those longer ones and overplay him trying to dribble closer. That's a big weakness and one that can be fixed with work.

What I liked most from him against the Saints was his run and shot that the Soton keeper saved. I thought he was just going to pass it to Pogba as he was running the show, but no, he took off and put them under a lot of pressure. It's nice to see we have a few players now who will take responsibility and not always look for the easy option, no matter easy it'd be for the team to just give it to our best performing player on the day. In doing this, we hopefully won't be as predictable as we have been in recent years.

Mourinho is not one to be very patient with players... you either perform or you get benched. He puts a lot of pressure on players, young or old. Either Martial will thrive under the pressure or he will wilt. We'll find out in fairly short order too. I don't think he has a lot of time to show positive signs imo. Maybe 10 games and he's already 2 games into it.

You simply can't wait to write Martial off for United, can you?

Are you Perez by any instance?

Did i say that? He has no future at Real Madrid with Ronaldo and Bale there. I really want him to do well for Man Utd because he has the opportunity. BUT, I know Mourinho. I remember how brutal he was on Benzema, Illaramendi, Sahin, etc. Benzema was the only one who resisted and imposed himself despite Mourinho.

Sooner or later, Man Utd will have a poor result. When that happens, Mourinho likes to have scapegoats on the team. At Real Madrid, it was Iker Casillas, Benzema... and he even added Pepe and Ramos later. I just feel that Martial is one of the most likely targets along with Mata and Fellaini when the time comes for Mourinho to deflect criticism. Why? He has replacement options for those three just like he had ready-made alternative for those he targeted at Madrid. He won't blame guys that he can't replace. He's Machiavellian like that.

Same thing happened at Chelsea too.

This is a baseless suggestion. Who would he replace Martial with? Did he replace Hazard?

think Martial's natural position is as a 9 or 10. We need proper wingers.

Is Young on the way out?
He's not a winger in the traditional sense, but there aren't many traditional left wingers around anyway.

Ribéry, Hazard, Neymar, Turan, Ronaldo, Sterling, Nolito, Alexis and Reus all look to cut inside rather than go to the byline.

So, as a leader, he challenges his players? What a monster.

Also, your argument needs new legs to stand on. Casillas as an example:houllier:

Sorry no. Casillas had just come off the Euro that Spain won and had saved their arse in that tournament. He started slow because all players coming off of long summer tournaments start the season slow. Just how it is. Mourinho's issue with Iker was way more than that... Iker (along with Pepe, Ramos and eventually Ronaldo) wouldn't let Mourinho get away with lies. As soon as Mourinho said something outrageously false, Iker would respond indirectly via the media. Mourinho felt his authority threatened.

The crazy thing is that the backup was Adan, not Lopez. When Mourinho said that it was a technical, not personal, decision to bench Iker for Adan, everyone knew it was bs. Not because Iker was so great at that particular moment... but because it was Adan!!! Adan was not very good to begin with at all (at his best, he was worse than even today's Iker lol). He crumbled under the pressure of replacing Iker. Lopez was bought in an emergency situation months later because Adan was so bad and Iker was injured.

Madrid was forced to cut Adan that summer too... because Adan didn't want to spend another second with Madrid. He asked for his contract to be rescinded. It almost ruined his career completely. Iker is a Spain legend and people felt that he didn't deserve to replace him. I felt genuinely bad for the kid and really got angry at Mourinho for doing this to him. Adan may not have been great, but he's a human being and a Madrid cantera. He didn't deserve it at all.

Mourinho was a disgrace at Madrid in his last season. He did some good at the club without a question. But he is as classless and ruthless as it gets. Can't stand the guy.

Iker was pretty bad and everyone thought that before Mou decided to act. Yeah, you can point to Adan, but at that point you had to bench him. He was really bad. Nothing you say will change that.

Lucky for Martial, the alternative to him is Depay who is shite. Martial played a part in our goals at bournemouth btw and was actually pretty good in the second half. Even at Southampton, he was good and was just missed some chances, but at least he was making/getting there.

There this narrative that you have to score to have a good game. I thought Ibra had an overall bad game, misplaced a lot of passes and his touch wasn't on, but he got 2 goals so therefore a good game.

One thing I noticed about him, he is not fit yet. He is going to have a wonder of a season... the guy is so talented. The signs were there against Southampton... he just need to re-settle in a post LVG team.

Do you honestly think that's going to cut it against top sides where Valencia will actually have to defend properly and cannot afford to bolt forward at every opportunity?

Noticed a few people almost turning on Martial?

Are you guys serious, we are 2 games in he hasn't played BAD by any stretch of the imagination.

We now have Zlatan, Pogba etc of course he isn't going to stand out AS MUCH as e did before as now he's not literally the only player doing any good.

He is now another BRILLIANT string to Uniteds bow.

Not to mention he's f*cking 20 YEARS OLD...

He'll have a slightly different role this season I reckon but that's primarily down the players we've brought in. Ibrahimavic, Pogba, Mkhitaryan etc have come in and that attacking quality will probably slide Martial under the radar a bit IMO. Last year his pace and threat was our main weapon with the ball but with that extra quality around him we have a few more outlets to play at.

He's a classy player though but he's learning. The bigger picture is often overlooked in football these days but he's 20 years of age. He's got so much talent; he can beat a man, he's quick, he's strong, he's a presence and when he's on form he's a real threat and a goal scorer.

That consistency will come the more he plays at this level and he'll find things that work as his career progresses. He's immensely talented though and if he keeps his head down, works hard and keeps learning he'll have an outstanding career I'm sure.
