Well Mourinho isn't the only manager who seems to think Martial has been poor. He's been poor for his country too.

I think he should start. But you can't blame the manager alone on this one. Martial has been sulking about shirt numbers.
Deschamps has the option of Coman, Griezman, Payet, Gameiro, Lemar, Fekir etc. etc. up front. France has so much attacking firepower that they don't even to call up someone like Dembele. At the national team level with teams as good as France, you have sufficient depth in quality to be able to bench players like Martial if he's not on form or for some kick-up-the-arse based reason.

We don't have that luxury.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I've said this and others have too, but any semblence of excitement and progression from this team will only arrive if this guy can get going. He's the only player in our squad now that can go up a level or two and improve things for the whole team. The rest are pretty much what you see is what you get.

Anyway, today we brought on Fellaini to try and win us the game instead of Martial. The latter was sat picking his arse instead of being in a position to help us.

And some people still think it's all well and good leaving him out the squad to prove some sort of vacuous point to do with iffy form? Well, we sure showed we don't need him.

Erm from his agent you numpty.
Quote from his agent:

"'I am not going to lie to you. Yes, this has affected him, yes this surprised him, yes it disappointed him... for a few days. But he is a professional. He then got back into the swing of things."

And he was upset at the fact that United didn't bother to tell him that they were changing his number, which is fairly understandable considering he was making a brand out of it.

Take a trip down memory lane.
One thing that sticks out from that video is how many times he took his defender on the outside. He does none of that these days and always look to come inside. His lack of running off the ball also really doesn't help his case.

Hope he turns it around though. His potential is huge!

Probably won't be many who agree with me, but I think we should of persisted with him despite bad form.

The talent is unquestionable. He's out of form and low on confidence at the moment. He should of been kept as the main forward, and retrospectively we shouldn't of signed Zlatan and instead got a left winger with Martial going through the middle again.

We would've risked burning him out though. He played like the most minutes out of any attacking player in all of the Top 5 leagues last year if I remember correctly.

Mourinho clarified it this week that he's changed the way Martial is to play in the current setup. He has to adapt. While that doesn't make the most sense, the fact that you should play to a player's quality more than fitting them into a system, Martial cannot improve unless he gets match time...same with Mkhitaryan.

He should of adapted his system to suit his best players.

Martial and Mkhi are two of the most talented players in the squad.

OK, lets see some facts. He is 20yrs old, he moved countries just last season and is still learning the language, and he has just lost his family due to a divorce. To cap it all up he also lost his number 9 shirt which he earned last year to a player who just came in. Yes, going through that would feck with my performance too. I am surprised he hasn’t downed the tools like Hazard last season.

If there is a player who needs an arm around the shoulders, it him.

It depends. Even Ronaldo had to curtail his free wheeling ways and become more of a winger/poacher hybrid under Mou. On the flipside, Ozil became one of Europe's best 10s under him at Madrid. I'm willing to trust Mou on this one.

It happened last season and he was still performing so you can't use divorce as an excuse. They never married anyway and now he already has a new girlfriend. I think he just needs to adapt to Jose's system. If left winger doesn't work, might should try him no9 in league cup game. I hope he starts as a striker against West Ham in league cup game.

That's one of my fundamental issues with Mourinho. How can you pick Fellaini ahead of Martial? Even freaking Young or Depay is better than Fellaini if you don't want Martial. What's the point of Fellaini if you have Darmian/Rooney/Lingard trying to deliver crosses and only Valencia who can actually cross which in itself is so rare. Depressing.

Martial may need to mature and improve his game but I think he is also just a victim of Ibrahimovich. Mourinho wants a hard working side that is solid defensively and he also wants to have at least one forward player that can run behind the defense and be a threat in transition. Ibra isn't going to track back much or pose a threat to run behind. Therefore, if Ibra is a mainstay at CF, then the logic of team selection that follows is this:

First, Jose is never (or almost never) going to select a side with two wingers that are offensively oriented wide forwards as this gives him three players across the front line that prefer advanced roles and are too often caught up field, which is one too many for his liking. He will want at least one winger to be more of a deeper lying wide playmaker like Mata or a very hard working two way player like Lingard. Basically, you're very unlikely to see Mourinho starting the Martial-Ibra-Rashford front line, except perhaps against really bad teams.

Second, in choosing which wide forward to prefer alongside Ibra, Jose is going to prioritize a player that can run behind the defense more than a player that likes to drop and pick up the ball to face the defense (since the former is something Ibra doesn't offer and the latter is something he does). This gives Rashford an advantage over Martial.

The end result is that Martial is the odd man out unless Ibra is sitting (as against Arsenal) or Rashford is sitting (as in August).

I think this is the problem, not so much the other aspect. Against the bigger sides away from home, is where your point above is accurate. But for most games, where we should be dominant and controlling games, Martial is too static, and with Ibrahimovic and Mata in the team, it is far too one-paced, even though Martial is quite possibly the fastest and best dribbler we have within the side.

That's without doubt the single biggest disappointment comparing his play this season and last season. He started to do it around the same time he gave an interview where he said "I need to think more like a striker". As soon as I read that I knew that wasn't a good thing and that turned out to be the case.

We don't need him to be a striker. He's such a good dribbler and when he goes outside of the full-back to provide a cut back or a cross he's so much more effective. He's being selfish and trying to "think more like a striker" is contributing in a big way to his shite form.

It's so sad, I actually don't remember the last time he went outside a full-back. Compare that to his performance at Derby last season. Masterclass in going outside and think he got two assists that night.

He isn't a great dribbler, he dribbles like a striker, actually he plays like a striker because after all he isn't a winger.

He's a great dribbler. He isn't elite in that regard. No Ribery or Messi, but he's certainly better than at it than 80% of all attacking players in his age bracket.

Hopefully Martial gets the chance to play as a no.9 and Zlatan is right behind him. It's better to shift Mata out wide than Martial, imo.

I think he's a great dribbler. His dribbling is great for a wide-forward and Suarez comes to mind. I think they have similarities in their dribbling and I certainly think Suarez is a brilliant dribbler for the position he plays and the role he's asked to execute.

I'm not comparing him to original wingers and their flair and skillful dribbling like Neymar and Dembele. I mentioned that him playing wide means he needs to try to go outside more often, even regardless of whether he dribbles like a winger or a striker. He can try to be a striker all he likes when he plays up front. Although I do agree that he dribbles like a striker. But dribbling like a striker and going outside the full-back to the byline is still much better than cutting inside into a crowded area to try to curl a shot at the far corner that usually gets blocked before the ball even enters the penalty area.

This is also why we (as a club and management) need to be clear with what we expect from him. I see him as a wide forward that can be a clinical finisher as opposed to a skillful out and out winger. More of a 'Cristiano at Real' player instead of someone like Robben or Hazard. That's also why I still think we need a right winger with the characteristics of the latter two players I mentioned above.

I'd sell him and Shaw. I think we can get most value for them, and give Mourinho the money and resources he needs to make it his own team. Which is obviously the most important thing.

You're not serious are you? You want to sell one of the best young players in the world who has the potential to be up there with the best in the world? As well as one of the very few good young fullback talents out there?

I'm not saying to give them away for free. Just recoup some value while their stock is still high, and use that money on players that will be useful to the manager.

If your forward player isn't scoring, he needs to contribute in other ways in assists or at least put a shift in. At present we are not seeing any of the three.

I worry for him cause Jose likes players that work hard and Martial tends to wait for the ball to be handed to him 'perfectly' and not much more....

Now, I agree with you but like Suarez, we need to stop that bullshit about playing him wide. I will say something that might not be appreciated by the Caf but he wanted to play upfront for Monaco and he was excited when Jardim gave him the role, now he has to do something that I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to do and I kind of feared that when United came for him, he should have stayed at Monaco and develop as the striker he wants to be.

Idiotic.

I doubt if Mourinho would ever want to sell Martial anyway. Any manager worth his salt would be trying to get the best out of a player with that sort of talent.

Do you realise the talent Martial has? He shouldn't need to prove himself ahead of average players like Lingard
I think every player needs to prove that he is good enough to wear the shirt on the pitch.

He has talent, no doubt, but if his form is poor, we can't sacrifice our results, to please a young attacker who has had 1 good season in his entire career.
I think that this is a cross-roads in his career. He can either work hard, play into form then start scoring goals or he can sulk and remain in poor form. This is something that only Martial himself can influence.
I do hope he comes good, though - we need him firing on all cylinders.

I think he's got a bit too comfortable last season with his spot guaranteed and maybe thinking he's already made it so young.
This could be a factor.

Hilarious use of one of the most talented players in world football. Hope Pep tries to sign him in January while you play the likes of Lingard and Rashford ahead of him. Mourinho has no clue.
I guess the use of Sane has been exemplary from Pep, right?

Selling Martial would be very stupid IMO and I doubt it happens. But Jose has definitely shown himself willing to sell a young talented player that isn't fitting into his system. He sold Robben at 23, Balotelli at 19 (technically sold just after Jose left Inter but already on his way out by most accounts), De Bruyne at 22, and Lukaku at 21.

I understand the logic, but if you watch how Rashford is deployed, that's not at all what he's doing. He's facing and trying to take on 1-on-1 or 1-on-2's for the most part. He's not really running in behind backlines.
