If the medical team are flying to the states then it is because the rest of the club are travelling there as well in a few days. I would imagine the medical team go a few days early to get set up. The fact Lukaku is there as well is a bonus.

All round front man? Van Nistelrooy?

Are you joking? He was nothing but a goalscorer. RvN NEVER scored a goal from outside 10-yards in his entire time with United. He barely even touched the ball outside the box, to be fair. He wasn't involved in link up play...United used wide players to whip in crosses, high and low, and RvN would finish 30 of those crosses a season. That's all he did. He did it briliantly. But to class him as some all-round footballer is delusion. He wasn't a footballer...he was just a finishelr.
That is straight up nonsense. RvNs hold up play was the best I've ever seen at United by any player, his link up play was integral to us changing our team formation. He didn't limit himself to being a simple penalty box finisher til his final season.

I'm really enjoying this madrid v united thread but i do wish people would stop derailing it with off-topic and irrelevant posts about lukaku.

I'm not moaning. I'm looking at the qualities of one striker and the qualities of another and I think one will be better than the other. If we're not allowed to do that what's the point of a forum?
Too rational for here. Stop it. I for one would have preferred Morata in terms of his link up play, however in Lukaku we are paying 75 mill for a proven premier league goal scorer - I fear that Morata will go to chels and prove to be the better buy, but there are a lot more ifs and buts in that, whereas I'd put a good amount of money that Lukaku will score 20+ goals for us.

We'll just to wait and see that I'm right, whoops to see who is right I mean
Wait and see what? That Morata will be still at Real and still second choice behind Benzema despite scoring more than him. I also find it funny that you keep dodging the point that your team just paid 45 million euros for a 16 yr old. I wonder why!

So Everton want £90m? why is it theres almost a 20% 'mufc tax' on any player we sign? No way should we allow this to cost more than pogba because we he could do without the 'most expensive player' tag. In this case we are in a strong position, Everton need to sell after the business they have done, and we have an asset they want in Rooney.

The offer should be £75m non negotiable.

Why should we care about the money Everton is asking for? What is more important to us? The player or the money? If we don't spend it, one of the Glazer sons will use it to buy a property in Florida.

We need to get the players we want - the money is irrelevant. Keeping the money won't get us a league title, spending it improves our chances of winning a title. That's the way I see it. We need 2 strikers, we shouldn't be wasting time haggling prices. We should pay up!

So is this deal still on? Sky Sports are confusing the crap out of me. No where else is saying Everton are holding off for £90 million.

Hahaha a bigger club? hahahahaha

No

More fans, more money, but never a bigger club

Can I ask a serious question to the older Man Utd fans.

Do you not resent going for players like Lukaku and Morata? Seems beneath Man utd to be fair.
You lot had Arbeloa as your RB, Diara as a midfielder, a dropping off Heinze as LB not so long ago. And it is us who should be resenting buying a 25-30 goal striker yet to hit his prime.

SKY sports have no idea what is going on.

Paul Joyce, the top merseyside journo for everton and liverpool, confirmed the details of the agreed fee.

75m base fee + 15 million in easy addons + Rooney free transfer.

Everton are not "holding out for 90m", they've already agreed to 90m + rooney.

Again...sky sports is garbage.

We don't know if he will or won't do that. We can only make predictions based on limited evidence and flawed mental processes. People are notoriously bad at making predictions - even experts. I'm assuming van Gaal didn't assume think that di María would sulk, be lazy and decide to feck off to France after a season. I'd like to think he was aware that it was a risk and he evaluated those risks against the possible opportunities. Unfortunately he and United's senior management miscalculated.

In any case, your first point was obviously ridiculous - if he scores goals then nothing else matters. I just presented a simple argument to refute the notion.
The original argument was "he will score a lot of goals for us but his overall playing ability is poor".

I think the most important factors in judging a striker is his scoring abilities. If you have someone who scores 30 goals a season for us, would you say "yes, he scores a lot but he is a poor footballer overall"?

feck Everton and Real Madrid seriously. 90 million for Morata or Lukaku.

This is why not overspending is important. It's not a case of lining the Glazers fat pockets with money. It's now the case of every club demands £100 million of us straight off, whether its Pogba or fecking Seamus Coleman.
They were asking the same figure from Chelsea.
Higuian last season. Belotti 89m release clause, the only way to get him. Morata.. And these are not Suarez/Lewandowski level. Van Dijk a CB was quoted at 60m.

Wake up and get with the program. We're not living in the past anymore. With so much money being in the game right now, clubs will spend it.

People complained we overpaid for Stam, Rio, CR(expensive for a teenager at the time), Rooney.. I rather we overpay for the players the manager wanted provided of course they are quality. Morata, Lukaku, Belotti are at similar levels really with Lukaku already proven in the in the league. 20 goals average in all competitions for the past 5 years. Only 24 years old. Health permitting, will only get better now he joins a better club.

Why do Sky keep going to a reporter outside Carrington, when Lukaku is in bed in an LA hotel?
a desperate attempt to keep pay tv subs onside and pretend like they are actually doing something. When in reality it's basically verbal diarrhea that is about 24-48 hours behind every credible source, or takes conflicting stances on the same subject within the same hour to do nothing but generate garbage content for clicks.

It absolutely isn't.

We are the richest club in the world in this year. Real were for 12 years in a row. Does EPL getting some extra money this season makes that big difference on who is the biggest? Or was it the adidas deal who made the difference? If Real get a new deal with their shirt sponsor, will that make them bigger than us.

The number of fans is 1) estimation from mostly English media (and they are near as biased as Marca), 2) quite meaningless. About point (1), Real has more followers than us in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, so the idea that we have so much more fans than them is a bit misleaded IMO. (2), most of these fans, came from countries who don't even watch football that much, but more importantly, they have no significance in club's success etc. Having a few more fans in Vietnam or Cambodgia is nice, but how does that make us bigger than Madrid? Do we have more fans in UK than Madrid in Spain? Extremely unlikely. Do we have more fans in places from where most of the players and the revenue come? Absolutely no. Real dwarfs us in Europe and South America, and so it is no surprise that most of the kids dream to play for them (or nowadays Barca), rather than United.

If we look at history, again it ain't close. They have 12 European Cups, we have 3. They have 33 league titles, we have 20. They have 4 Ballon D'Ors in Cristiano Ronaldo (won in the last 5 years), we have 4 in our entire history.

When it comes to who is the biggest, I think 2 factors are the most important (maybe, the only important ones): 1) the success/history; 2) the ability to recruit players. Claiming that Real don't lead in both of them is like that West Ham fan who might claim that they are the biggest club in England cause they have the most aggressive fans.

NB: And yep, I am done with the pointless argument.
They've already signed a new deal with adidas. And if we go as far as them in the CL it won't even be close. We've consistently been named the biggest brand in football.

Edit: @cheeky_backheel I was talking purely revenue wise.

Us bidding 75 mil for him suggests otherwise. It's either Mourinho thinks his defensive contribution good for us or he doesn't expect Lukaku to defend.
Your logic is backwards - the more you pay for a player, the more you expect from him.

Pogba is more expensive and he is asked to defend more than he did at Juve.

And yet Arsenal are able to snag Lacazette for £45 million right under everybody's noses. A player who is probably better than either Lukaku or Morata. The program does not apply to all.

So, you'd take 27 (peak year) RvN over 24 year old (yet to reach peak) Lukaku right now?

At the age he is at now, Lukaku has scored more club AND international goals than Van Nistelrooy at the exact same age.

And if you think RvN was a good 'footballer' then you need to take of the red-tinted glasses. He was a finisher. That's all he was. He'd tell you that himself.
2001 when we signed Ruud he would have been 25, a single year older than Lukaku right now and we'd have brought him in a year earlier at 24 but missed a season through injury.
Just because Ruud had a slower start to his career and Lukaku a fast start (playing professional football since 2009! mind) doesn't mean anything for the player Ruud became. Some start their careers earlier and peak/finish earlier, see Mr.Rooney as an example.

99-2003 was arguably the most talented team United have ever had, Ruud in 2003 almost carried us to the title by himself, in a team containing Keane, Becks, Scholes, Giggs , a lot of our all time greatest players he was seen as right up there in talent and importance.
If he was so limited as you claim, in That team, with those players, he'd have stood out like a sore thumb instead, you making him out to be some glorified poacher is fecking outrageous.

And back on the topic of that Everton fans take on him, the only thing that makes him sound anything like Ruud is the fact he wrote he's clinical, thats literally about the only similarity I see, the negatives certainly don't sound like the Ruud I knew and loved.

This is a bit off topic but I can't find a more relevant thread that's open. The connection is it pertains to Chelsea challenging us for Lukaku but needing to offload Costa first. I just read in the Guardian that Athletico are putting together a bid for Costa, which would allow Chelsea to act. My question is, how come Athletico can do that? If they still have a window available why did the Griezmann deal fall through? Genuinely confused.

seriously? Madrid have won 3 of the last 4 CL and are the first club to win back2back. Even if we win next year, we stillwont come close to the heights they have achieved.

He's unproven in a big league. Why do you think no top club has been in for him past couple of years? If he's the better player, why didn't Arsenal have any competition signing him?

Oh no, I didn't mean the amount per se. I meant the fact that he is going to be our main striker next season.

Lukaku is unproven at a big club and Morata unproven in England. Nobody is perfect.

It actually beats me about Lacazette. I thought we would have been straight in for him at £45 million and considering we need a striker.

United are far more popular in China, India and even the United States (compare the support for United vs Real in that preseason game a couple of seasons ago).

Are Real a more successful club than United? Yes. Does that make them objectively bigger? No. History is not the only indicator of who's a bigger club, or you would argue that Nottingham Forest are a bigger club than PSG currently, which would be absolutely absurd.

We are by far the biggest club playing in the biggest league, with the most fans around the world, and making the most money. I don't see why it's strange to say we're at least on par with Real.

They just said United have more fans than Real in Vietnam, but Real have more in Argentina, and RvN was shit apart from being brilliant.
Strange of them to mention this whilst reporting on 20/20 cricket.
I'll admit, I laughed.

Again not what I said, but just keep on with the goofiness.
Well, a video of a player showing good striking skills with powerful running, aerial strength and two-footed finishing was dismissed as something any half-decent striker can do, so I don't see what else is remaining.

Its annoying how people keep moaning about the £75m as if it's 1996

Get used to it fast because it is only going to keep going one way while the money continues to pour in

It is something any half decent striker can do, that goal is nothing special, however that was never my point, Shamans is the one that turned everything to goals, I said he's a good finisher I hate how he plays and his lack of ability on the ball in linking up play and his horrid first touch, I don't want to see someone that plays like him at United.

Exactly. Be interesting if someone compared say United's turnover in '95 to what it is now and the Cole vs Lukaku fees. I would, but I can't be bothered.

The problem is when we sell players it's still 1996 prices. Letting Rooney go for £10 million? feck that. 2017 prices Everton. Fork out that £25 million.
