Alvaro Morata has revealed he had an offer to join Manchester United prior to his transfer from Real Madrid to Chelsea.

But the 24-year-old said the presence of Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge made his decision to move to London over Manchester an easy one.

Morata said he was unaware of any interest from Chelsea at the start of the transfer window and thought they were targeting "a different player

He remains unsure whether that player was Romelu Lukaku, who was bought by Manchester United for £90m.

"I had various offers this summer, not only Chelsea and Manchester United but also from different leagues," he told the Daily Mail. "It was a good situation for me.

"The most important and best conversation I had was with Conte, he wanted me to come here.

"At the start of the summer, I didn't know that Chelsea were interested in me. I thought they were in for a different player, maybe Lukaku or maybe someone else, I don't know. I didn't think the option of Chelsea was open.

What a load of shite

Yeah, it was definitely us choosing Lukaku over him rather than him choosing Chelsea over us. Like that picture shows, the man dyed his hair red then shaved it all off when he wasn't joining. :D

Still, he's hardly going to say in an interview, 'yeah, United went for Lukaku and Conte quickly phoned me up in replacement'

He does not say that he chose Chelsea over United, only that there was an offer from United over the summer.

He does say that he said he'd only leave Real for Chelsea in the full interview.

And he basically admits that he was Chelsea's second choice.

You lot pay too much attention to these fluff pieces.

Chelsea got Morata and we got Lukaku, they will say what the fans want to hear. What remains to be seen is their respective performances. So far there is very little between the two of them but already those who wrote off Morata due to his un-PL proven-ness looked silly.

How so? I think it was widely known that you lot were interested at one point and also that we were nailed on to get Lukaku.
I think he was referring to the insinuation that he chose you over us, reality being we did not want to pay the fee Madrid were asking and had just about wrapped up the Lukaku deal anyway. It seems to me, and I may be wrong, that you only pursued your interest in Morata when we finalised the Lukaku deal, and what he says here kind of backs that up.

What is the point in lying to please your clubs fans. Instead of lying just don't say anything on the matter. Saying that the presence of Conte was the deciding factor on wanting to go to London over Manchester. Yeah sure... Conte and Chelsea over Mourinho and United. A club that's success started 13 years ago and a good manager vs the second greatest club in the world and a top 10 manager of all time.

If United wanted him badly then we would have got him. Madrid were playing hard ball and we were not going to pay what they wanted. We got a better striker anyway. Better player debatable, but a better striker all day long.

Why did his newly wedded wife follow United's Instagram then? And why did Chelsea bid for Lukaku before they signed Morata?

Well yeah thats completely believable...a club pursuing a player without the player's awareness in this age of blatant tapping up. If Chelsea's fans believe that they will believe anything.

There's some mass amnesia on this site. A few months ago Morata was nailed on to join United and now Morata is a liar for suggesting there was interest.
Chelsea wanted Lukaku and United thought it was done so looked at Morata.

When it became clear Lukaku was available United decided to get him and ditched Morata. That's all it is.

No the BS in the article is that he made the decision to join Chelsea over Man Utd, he didn't, the only decision he had was to stay at Real Madrid or go to Chelsea, we moved on long before

We worked on the Lukaku deal all summer and were confident of signing him all along.

Morata was a backup/negotiation tactic.

Which implies that he had offers from both at the same time, and chose Chelsea over us. However, the Dailymail article, as hyperlinked in the article, doesn't have that specific line. In fact, he doesn't even make reference to choosing Chelsea over Manchester United. @duffer is right.

It's just the usual bollocks players say after joining a new club. I don't know why people really take mcuh notice or feel the need to make shit up just to justify disliking the player.

Morata is 24 years old. 13 years ago, he was 11. For his entire teenage years and now adulthood Chelsea have been a major force in both the PL and the CL. When players say they grew up watching Chelsea, they're talking about a period where we were winning titles and fighting battles with Barca in the CL. 13 years is not a short time, no matter how much it might feel like it sometimes.

If United wanted him badly then we would have got him. Madrid were playing hard ball and we were not going to pay what they wanted. We got a better striker anyway. Better player debatable, but a better striker all day long.
You know the whole 'players will always pick United' thing hasn't actually been true for a good 5-10 years now. You're a huge attraction to players of course, but so are both Chelsea and City, regardless of your feelings about either.

Blatant lie since nobody seemed to want to join Chelsea this summer.
Not the best window to push Chelsea's ability to lure players..

Unfortunately, this guy seems doomed to succeed, just knows where to pop up. Inzhagi-ish without being born offside.

What do you expect him to say?
I was ready to join United, but Perez was a greedy cnut so the deal fell through, so I had to choose Chelsea.

Chelsea and Utd both wanted strikers this Summer, both Morata and Lukaku both appeared available

Utd went after Morata and Chelsea went after Lukaku. Utd were unable to agree a fee with Madrid which was probably down to the transfer of De Gea a few seasons ago, Chelsea couldn't agree a fee with Lukaku as they wasn't willing to pay the ridiculous agent fees. After failing for Morata, Utd bid for Lukaku and were happy to pay the agent fees, Chelsea then went after Morata, Madrid were much more open to selling him to Chelsea

Both teams ended with top class strikers who are both still relatively young. Morata fits into Chelsea's style more and Lukaku fits into Utd's team more and both strikers have made excellent starts

Don't see why there's anything else to argue about

I was happy enough with the link to Lukaku, mainly because he scores regularly and he is a fan of the club. But I was absolutely delighted when the club signed Morata instead, for whatever reason. There's just that lovely class about him as a player.

I wish we got him instead of Lukaku.
Morata is a good player, I do really like him and his style of play. But be real mate, Lukaku is exactly the type of striker we needed up top, he is a lethal finisher who will easily score more than 30 goals this season.

The only other striker I would have wanted was Kane but because of Levy and Spurs that is a pipe dream.

I am really pleased with Lukaku, he has potential to improve and become an all round and complete striker.

That is true about Chelsea but City not so much. The only way players would choose City over the other big clubs is if they are a life long fan of the club or if City have thrown money at the player.

It isn't a myth that they offer houses to children's parent to attract them to the club.

Stop kidding yourself. United didn't want him. He dyed his hair red and his missus was all over our instagram. He wanted the move.

I read it as the narrator twisted thing. Morata at this part of interview talked exclusively about his decision to join Chelsea after talking to Conte. This was when Lukaku already signed for us and Chelsea had no other option.

I think he's just gutted we cut the deal suddenly and went on for Lukaku, so these quotes are normal.

Highly doubt he would dye his hair and have his misses follow us if there wasn't already advanced talks in place.

United did want him. That much was obvious all summer.

What we don't know is whether he was first choice (and Real didn't want to sell to us at any reasonable price) or not.

Yes. United went for Lukaku in the end. United didn't pick Morata, not the other way around.

He wanted the move. Chelsea were second choice.
