Apart from the lapse in judgement for Chelsea’s goal j thought he did pretty well to keep Hazard in check and cover spaces in front of the back 4. Hope he keeps progressing at this alarmingly good rate!

I don’t think he’s been particularly sidelined. He just started the season out of the XI and has nothing to suggest that he deserved to be in it when he’s got the chance.

People forget that Sir Alex always had players who fit the dependable workmanlike mould around too. We played Phil Neville in midfield at times!
Occasionally Nicky Butt played ahead of Paul Scholes in big games. It's a team game, so having players who are willing to play a supporting role allows a team to be greater than the sum of it's parts.
I think in a transfer world where every half decent player now costs over 30-40 million it is imperative that clubs develop players from their own academy who can come in and do a job when needed , if Herrera leaves now then Mctominay can take his place in the squad and United can use that 30-40 million for some other position. I really like his interviews though, he appears confident but not brash which is a good sign
Very assured on the ball, the lad has a big future.
Don't think he is totally to blame for the goal as there was a few mistakes there ... but maybe what we ought to be looking at is that it didn't play on his mind and he was better after it.

He had the worst defensive numbers of any midfielder on the pitch (including the defensive powerhouse that is Paul Pogba) so this defensive masterclass narrative is weird.

No one said he was a superstar. He can be a good player.
If you analyse his performance by statistics, i.e. like a computer, then you can say he had an average performance.
If you analyse his performance by watching the game, taking all the factors into account, such he's just had the biggest 2 games of his entire career, just broken into the first team, asked to do very specific things with very little margin for error, i.e. not like a computer, but like a human being then it's fairly obvious had a very good game.
In the last two pages alone people have claimed he can be a new Carrick, Matic or even Roy Keane for us.
He's done okay but nowhere near enough to warrant that sort of praise.

The step up to first team isn't as big as some make it sound.
Good temperament about him, which is the key thing in a young player, you can't coach that. The tactical awareness and technical aspects of the game can be coached but attitude, temperament, never-say-die attitude, humility, are all qualities that one should already have before even being considered to play for United. He's got those attributes it seems. Watch this space I suppose, we need to keep supporting him and encouraging him.
It's only one or two people, but yeah I agree, he has a lot to do.
