I thought he was ok today, part of a well oiled pass and move forward line. His movement and clever touches helped the 1 touch passing we were seeing first half today. Sometimes the sum is better than the parts.

Definitely not as bad as people are saying. Also he links well with mata and Rashford
Everyone links play better when Mata is on. That’s not a Rashford or Lingard thing. They were fortunate to play with him and an attacking fullback in Dalot today. Nice if those components were regularly in the team.

Was about to write exactly this. People aren't giving him much breathing room at the moment in here. Played his part he did, in probably one of our best games offensively under Mou. Deserves some credit

Nothing wrong with his performance today.

With Mata tucking in and almost playing that 10 role, Lingard's job is to focus on making runs in behind and unsettling the oppositions back four. Its very similar to the duo of Eriksen and Alli, where Eriksen creates, whilst Alli runs off the ball.

Only criticism is that I want Lingard to be finding better goalscoring positions. In my opinion, he has the ability to score 10 plus premier league goals if he is consistently played in the 10 position. Especially if we're creating the chances we created today.

It’s not close to being enough, surely?

He’s not good enough, he’s not what you would call a ‘top player’, more in the J.S.Park mould. He shouldn’t be an automatic pick as one of 3 forwards for Manchester United. Other than a spell last season, he doesn’t score nearly enough for us, and his final ball in the last third is awful. Because we are so woeful in terms of movement, that seems to add value to him, but it’s not enough.

He makes our attack more fluid, quicker. The ball sticks more with him in the no.10 role.

Superb display, always on the tip of the press recovering the ball. Integral to our team in my opinion if we are going to continue to play this fast press style.

Lingard's a big part of that too. His superb movement creates space for his teammates and drags the opposition all over the pitch. Iirc, you can take Mata's goal as an example. His run to the front post allowed Rashford to pick out Mata in space. He is very tidy on the ball too and is probably our best in tight spaces.

Yes, he is much better through the middle. It allows him to be much more involved and to utilize his best strengths.

Hope, We Lose
Play Fred instead of him, he’s bloody useless.
This is interesting. Apparently we arent playing Fred because we want more defensive solidarity, but Fred is better defensively than Lingard even if hes improved on that aspect slightly

He was once again useless, his best contribution was the 2-3 pressing runs on the GK. That's the starting attacker Jesse Lingard for Manchester United nowadays.

Think we can do better. He is good but not quite the elite level we should be starting. Problem is Lukaku is worse which helps him from criticisms.

Describing his display as 'superb' may be taking it a tad far, but the point about him being an integral part of the team if we want to play a fast high press is absolutely fair. We just seem to play better when we have the energy of Herrera, Lingard and Rashford in the team. Isn't it odd how a higher work rate yields better performance (OK, Fulham are too poor to make a strong argument, but the Arsenal performance was decent too).

We've got another silent dominator here. Would be nice if our nr.10 actually could do anything with the ball.

Maybe im getting old but I am starting to think the kid is going down the wrong route in trying to be a celebrity more than a footballer kind of like Memphis did, although Memphis has found form.

If you see Jesse on social media he is the epitome of the modern footballer. Flash harry who goes around thinking he is a rapper. And it does wind me up a bit when he is nowhere near the talent he seems to think he is.

The recent Rooney interview where he stated you would never see a player on Facetime to his mates before walking out on the pitch in his day, hard to believe he wasnt referring to Lingard.

In saying that he has shown flashes of being a good player & perhaps im just out of touch. I wish he would get his head down and focus on being a better footballer than wearing shit clothes and getting his face on the front of ad campaigns

Id say you are out of touch. Lingard has very good footballing fundamentals, someone that is clearly a product of good coaching and work from the player rather than an exceptionally talented individual. He's your standard United squad player, that plays to do a job and can chip in with a goal every now and then.

Him and players like Young constantly get criticised for simply being picked. They are the target for people that think that our squad isnt good enough.

The most goals Park ever scored for us was 8 in a season, less than Lingard. He was constantly played by SAF for the exact reasons that posters slate Lingard for. Energy, pressing and the occasional goal. The difference is that Park wasn't expected to lead the attack, he had better players to do that for him, we don't have the quality in attack like we used to.

I certainly dont think he is rubbish, but seeing what he can do and what he does on a weekly basis are very different things.

Perhaps its my inner Roy Keane or Fergie, I still have a certain expectation of how United players should behave off the field, maybe you might not agree with this but we never had super - flash players in our squad. Beckham & Ronaldo were two of the worlds best and consistent.

It seems the culture has changed under Mourinho, im not blaming him.

I remember also Rooney telling a story of Depay being out of the team, and was picked for a reserve match, and showed up in a Bugatti wearing snakeskin boots and a cowboy hat and he just knew he was a lost cause. I get hints of this from Lingard.

Maybe I am out of touch, but Lingard is 25 now and should be reaching his peak years soon. I know certainly if I was the manager I would ban all that social media dancing nonsense the lads do in the dressing room anyway.

We all love United
Wish we had bought Dele Alli ourselves. He's absolutely perfect in the Lingard role in a Jose team and more of a goalscorer

I use to like this guy and back him even though I knew deep down he wasn't good enough. But this clothing line launch has really pissed me off.

He has been shite all season and is nowhere the standard required and he's all over social media promoting his naff looking brand wearing daft clothing and giving hand gestures that even a child would find immature.

This ji-sung park comparison is a bit weird. JSP never looked out of place in that conquering United team, during one of our best period in history. You put JSP anywhere in attacking midfield or wing, he'd do good job.
While people still questioning Lingard starting in this one of our worst team and period in time. And he has to play in no. 10 or center to be not totally shite.

You can't get further away than that.

You could argue that if you put Park in this team he wouldn't have the same impact that he had back then, and if you put Lingard in that winning team, he could have been even more useful than Park. The comparison is fair enough I think since both players generally classifies as someone who necessarily isn't the superstar, but rather a hardworking option to step in with his respective qualities when needed. I love Park and don't think Lingard is at the same level of usefulness yet, but I don't doubt he will and realistically should surpass Park's rep before he retires here. Lets just hope he gets to prove his place in a winning team and that we don't solely rely on him to win us stuff, as we wouldn't do that with Park either.

 clear evidence of one of our fans that's accepted our fall
How someone can describe that performance as superb is beyond me. :houllier:
Rock on fellers. We're such a team of shithouses innit'.

Yes, he is much better through the middle. It allows him to be much more involved and to utilize his best strengths.
It goes beyond the structure of play, the extra player that presses to recycle possession needs to be smart and anticipate the action. A number of times he swooped in and mopped up great work press/tackle work from Rashford and Herrera and then Mata and Herrera. This piece in the midfield three is really important if we're going to continue playing this way. his positioning and anticipation was one of the main drivers of yesterdays performance.

It is less structure and more about being able to follow play and press as a unit. I enjoyed it.

Here, there, everywhere...
Jesse is a good squad player. Not any worse than many from the academy we have had under Sir Alex. He gets a bad rep and all the commotion because unlike in the past, we do not have the top quality starter that would make the manager use the likes of Jesse tactically and sporadically in games.

I don't care about the clothing line stuff. Doesn't bother me much. It's all part of the whole circus nowadays. Nothing you can do about it but accept it and not pay too much attention.

So you invested your resources on something, let's say a beer brand. You hired several individuals to create that brand under your name and created proper logistics, timeline and business models. Now you're sitting on your couch at home after a bad day at the office and your team contacted you that the launch is tomorrow. What should you say?

"Cancel it man, I did shyte at the office."

Right. Compared to Memphis, this is at okay level. Memphis is on another level of cringe.

Park was much more useful player than Lingard, it's not even funny. The specialist defensive/ all action role Park could do in big games and still chip in with a goal, is something Lingard isn't capable with. Park could do specific tactical jobs and managed to regularly get into our best side in decades. Lingard looks the worst player in this pathetic team we have now.

And I'm not sure what are this footballing fundamentals you are talking about, Lingard is comfortably the worst or second worst footballer (thanks to Jones) in our starting 11 more often than not.

I usually think a player "bringing balance to the team" is one of those meaningless phrases in football, but in Lingard's case it's quite true.

Wow. A game against Fulham and he's being classed as suberp. This guy would not start for another top 6 club with title ambitions, and is part of the cluster of deadwood since Moyes era that we can't seem to shift.

Although Park had to miss out the CL final win (which was probably one of our best team in decades). In fact he didnt even make the squad.

I think the Park and Lingard comparisons are fair. We can say Park could do tactical jobs and chip in with goals but they werent at the same time. In fact Lingard has chipped in with goals in big games.
Weve seen him score vs Arsenal recently, Chelsea winner (and another at their place which should have been a winner) that I can think of on top of my head.

Comparing on the basis of the two sides however is unfair, given Park was with a much superior team. You can see Lingard looks so much better with England under Southgate.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

The reality is, players these days spend far more time of every day of every week on football related issues than what they did back when Keane was here.

20-30 years ago, they'd play a game, then pop down the nearest pub and get drunk off their heads that night. They'd turn up to training the next day hungover or even still drunk. Very few focused on physical fitness outside of the training they did with the club. They could generally do whatever they wanted.

Nowdays the majority of them spend a huge amount of time focusing on health and fitness even outside of the club. Their diets are all planned out, they do extra fitness training and gym sessions. Very few of them drink or smoke. They also have far less ability to just go out and act like a normal person because of the celebrity focus that our society now has where the media follow them around looking for the tiniest little thing to attack them for, or the general public will be chasing them around for photos and autographs, etc.

If the worst they are doing now is dancing and having fun for social media, who really cares? As long as it doesn't actually effect their performances or go to their head (which it perhaps did with Depay) it's honestly much more professional than Keane and most of his generation was doing. We just didn't get to see much of that so it was the classic 'out of sight, out of mind'.
