Here's the problem : we have title ambitions but we haven't even competed for the title once in last 6 years so you can't look at the starting players like Lingard and think they're title winning squad. They're not even challenging to start with. Lingard isn't going to start for any title challenging squad of the last 5 years, so the fact we're starting him and asking for titles represent everything wrong with this United side.
We finished second last season when he actually played as a starter.

You admitted to that and double standards an hour ago. Players do have different qualities too.
Saying I can forget his general cringeworthy behavior if he was actually good enough is bias? If running and movement is some quality regarded attribute for a player of his position, then I can imagine you are enjoying how far we are off Liverpool and City.

As a winger yes, but Lingard would be pushing for a spot in the midfield.
Not sure about that. Fabinho, Keita, Wijnaldum and Milner are all better and you're forgetting that they still have injured Ox as well. He's going to get the same treatment as say Origi there.

You are the one that keep pushing that. He has many other qualities too.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
I think the same.

We do have better options though but for some reason the manager hasn’t tried it for an extended run of games.
Who though?

Mata was in terrible form for pretty much the calendar year of 2018 and the majority on here wanted him dropped from the starting 11 long before he actually was. It's only been the last month or so where he's started to turn it around again.

Rashford on the right has had good games but also plenty of poor games, and his poor games are probably worse than Lingard's.

Sanchez - yep, he should have got a proper run on the right. Still don't understand why Mourinho continued with him on the left for so long when it obviously wasn't working and we had Martial there. Having Sanchez on the right (and in the same team as Martial on the other side) may have been the way forward. In saying that, considering how poorly he played on his preferred left side it doesn't bode well for him and Lingard would probably have continued being better.

It's actually quite sad. The right wing is Lingard's worst role of the three that he's played in for us, but he still has been arguably our best there over the last 12 months. I blame the others for that, not him. With Mata starting to kick into form again though hopefully he'll reclaim that role (the problem being that he doesn't suit 433).

We didn't challenge for the league.
We'd probably have mounted a good challenge if Man City weren't just too good tbh. We amassed 81 points, an amount Arsenal have never reached nor got close this decade, Tottenham have beaten it once and the last time Liverpool got close or even challenged for the title, Lingard had zero Manchester United appearances.

Chelsea finished with 93 points the season before it. To challenge for the league now you need +90 points at least. 81 nowadays will never make you challenge for the league never mind win it.

My general observation of his on and off the pitch behavior.

Is that enough for you?
What does his off the pitch behavior have to do with anything? He's not breaking crimes, smoking, drinking, disrespecting or assaulting people is he? We had a guy like that before, his name was Ravel Morrison.

And Leicester won it with 81 points the season before. Let's not drift away from Lingard though.
Anyway, in the same season we apparently didn't have enough points to challenge, the same teams Lingard supposedly won't get into still struggled to keep up with the team Lingard was starting games for. When you consider the fact they still basically have the same players starting games for them in midfield and in attack, then I'd say Lingard would do just fine if he was contracted to any of them.

You're taking only one season among many. The seasons around it the league winners were +87 points.

Bring me one title winning side in which Lingard will slot in as a starter and tell me he'll play ahead of whom.

I could say Mctominay gets into the France world cup winning team ahead of Pogba. Doesn't mean anything.
I get it mate you didn't find any answer to say, because we all know he'll never get into City or Chelsea squads that won the last 2 league titles, never mind the Liverpool who are challenging this year or Spurs who challenged Chelsea the season before last. In fact, If I asked you for a single top club world wide who will dispose one of their players for Lingard now, you'll probably struggle, so ok, I don't think we need to drag this any farther. I get what I want as an answer already. :)

Well I don't think many top clubs would dispose much of their players for any of ours. Why? You are comparing their players at the form of their lives to ours at their Nadirs.
I don't know how to handpick players and fix them into teams that existed years ago. France probably wouldn't have won the world cup if they had Aguero instead of Giroud, and we can all agree that Aguero is a better striker than Giroud.

Lingard had been playing regularly since LVG second season, that means 4 years now and he pretty much has only one purple patch last season consisting of 4 months between November to Feb. The rest of these 4 years were dreadful whatever the team was in good day or bad day. He's one of the players that we pretty much know what his form is.

France would have taken Aguero, tweaked their formula up front a little bit to suit him and still win the WC.

Those teams you asked me to magically fix Lingard into would probably have taken Lingard, tweaked their formula a little bit to suit him and still win league titles.

Decent squad player but if we want to get back to being realistic title contenders players like Lingard should only be used as back up! Capable of the spectacular but for me lacks composure and wastes way too many chances. Wouldn't have been a starter on any of our title winning teams.

They wouldn't, because no big club accepts mediocrity in their main lineup, except if they're as shite as us.

There's room for him in the squad but only in midfield . Like he plays for England. I hate seeing him on our RW.

Agree. I don't see the appeal of Lingard personally. Yes, he's a local player, but he isn't that good. We can not be playing players just because they're local. You pointed it out, he has been pretty shite most of his time here besides a few months. Class is permanent, form is temporary. He had four months of good form. His class is shite, at least if you're trying to win anything of note. If you're Burnley or Brighton, his class is a bit more tolerable for you.

I agree with those saying he is everything wrong with United. I agree, he is. OK as a squad player, should not be someone we rely on if we want to actually challenge for anything meaningful.

But Leicester won the league with Albrighton and Drinkwater in their starting XI.
The fact that you keep hanging on this freak season of a team that challenged for relegation the seasons next proves you're running out of ideas for replaying.

He's one of the (many) reasons why we are so poor these days. He's a painfully average player that wouldn't start for West Ham and yet he's first choice here. Grim.
He starts for us because he likes a goal at Wembley and was born in Manchester and...umm Jose knows what he's doing from all the way down in midtable.

One of the shittest players in the league but somehow steals a living at United because football sages want to tell the rest of us we can't see his brilliance. Only the football snobs tolerate him. And united management have been a farce for 5 years so it's no wonder Lingard somehow stays when much worse has been allowed to pass at United. Lingard will be looked at in the same category as Bastian, Schneirderlin, Jones, Darmian, Lukakus weight 5 months into a season when he's playing at Brighton in a couple of years time.

I've given a proper objective reason why a case can be made for him having a very good chance of getting into the team of the other clubs at the top of the league if he was contracted to any of them. You didn't counter that, but changed the goal posts instead, and then proceeded to predict the past and try to rewrite history, asking me to do so too. Unfortunately, I am not very good at predicting the past, so I will just stick to facts.

I didn't find any reason, objective or not, in your argument so far.

Saying he would get into any team is subjective not objective. Be it Leicester or otherwise. Your weird defense, is it even a defense, of Lingard is just long and monotonous and generally fails to make a strong point.

Not saying that our counterpoints are all that much stronger, but step down off the pedestal and rejoin the convo pal.

I always thought he was another Cleverley; a player who isn't very good and never will be but was lucky enough to benefit from being in our academy at a time when our first team lacked quality. Now he's even started his own brand, just like the untalented Mr Cleverley

We're talking about teams who're going to challenge for the league. We didn't challenge for the league last season and neither were the teams behind us as well.

The only team from the bunch of last year who's challenging City now is Liverpool and they went on and bought 2 midfielders and 1 winger in summer (positions in which Lingard play) so he won't get any minutes there. I doubt he would even have got as much minutes for them last season as well because they still had Ox before his injury. Lingard in Liverpool will get the same treatment as Origi, because they have 5 midfielders better than him and Shaqiri on the bench for wing positions.

Eventually Cleverley was sold and even failed at Everton. So far he isnt great at Watford either. Ridiculous to think that player was once deemed good enough for Manchester United and i think Lingard might end up like Cleverley if he leaves Manchester United. Not good enough for United, not good enough for subtop (Everton) and not even good enough for a midtable team (Watford).

Hopefully he gets sold soon and we can see how the rest of Lingard his career goes.

Sidenote : If Lingard scores the winner today he will be my favorite player for this season.

Although City look like they'd be running away with the title, I'd say all the top five were still pretty much in title race going into this weekend - as some teams are yet to play this weekend. They have done so while fielding mostly the same players - in Lingard's position - they did last season.
