Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think we're not tremendously far from putting in a decent title challenge. I've always thought our squad wasn't as bad as it's made out to be. There's some dross for sure but Pogba, Sanchez, Martial, DDG have previously shown their class, even if it wasn't always for United. Even Lukaku, Rashford, Herrera, Matic, Mata etc. while hardly world class have been pretty decent (or have been before). Lingard's a good squad option, as is Fellaini. Jury's still out on Fred of course.
Our defence isn't that bad if you look at the quality of the individuals - granted they ain't setting the world alight, but they're really not 29-goals-halfway-through-the-season bad. I know Jones gets a lot of stick but he's not completely a walking disaster when he's on the pitch - just made of glass. Rojo too to a lesser extent. Smalling is good (but not great). Lindelof actually has started to look half-decent. The point I'm making is that nobody is Titus Bramble level; they all have brainfarts, but I'm thinking a lot of it is a psychological thing, especially since Jose kept chopping and changing. Bailly looked immense when he first came, seems to have his confidence shot, but we've all seen him play much better. Early stages but Dalot looks very promising. Shaw may never reach the heights we imagined he'd reach but he's alright.
Get in some good fullbacks and a class striker, a controlling DM, blood in some of Chong, Gomes, Greenwood, Tuanzebe and Fosu-Mensah and we'll be alright going forward. This season is a real outlier. It's all about getting in a manager who can get the best out of what we already have and who's willing to give youth a chance. Man for man I'd say our squad already matches Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs' (but obviously not as a team unit). Rashford already does much better in an England squad which isn't any better than ours. City are a little far away, sadly enough, but Liverpool aren't.
I know there are question marks over Zidane but he seems a good man-manager and motivator (which is what we really need, all our guys are underperforming), although Poch is probably the best option. Honestly just about anyone is going to be a risk at this point. All the available/gettable choices are either 1) unproven at a top, top club (Poch, Jardim, Howe, Solskjaer etc.) or 2) have some question marks over their tactical nous/transfer market ability (ZZ). Think we should go all out for Poch since he knows the league and plays some quality stuff.
In the interim I'd say Blanc is fine, wouldn't be averse to Solskjaer either. Sir Alex coming back aka Scholesy is the pipe dream but I'd faint if it happens.
