Lingard's the new Park. Tactically flexible, intelligent, will run all day, but not the most glamorous/gifted and won't give you great stats. A quick search on premierleague.com shows that Park had 19 goals and 21 assists in 154 league games, while Jesse has 17 goals and 10 assists in 102. Hardly tearing up the ground.
This kind of player isn't going to be making key passes every 5 mins. These guys will still play in big games and run around and make good runs and fluff good opportunities (like Jesse today) and generally not look like they're "contributing" much, but will end up doing useful things like staying on top of Spurs' midfielders or man-marking Pirlo. If they're lucky they'll get a goal or assist. Park iirc loved a goal vs Arsenal/Chelsea while Jesse won us the FA Cup, and it was his interception today which ended up leading to Rashford's winner.
Chicharito was similar in that sense. Everyone could see his limitations, and his stats were never out of this world, but he'd invariably find a way to score against Chelsea, sometimes assisting himself in the process.
Can't see why anyone would be against having Lingard on the bench. A useful asset to have and homegrown. Of course we could do better with someone else starting consistently on the RW, but as lots of people have already pointed out he's a valuable squad player. Sure, he wouldn't start for Barca. Neither would Park have fit into Rijkaard or Guardiola's Barca. Each squad needs its own players.
