Every player is judged off moments, though. Those who are saying he wasn't good, which is fibe, are doing so based off his bad moments, no? Like his inconsistent passing, giving away the pen, being too rash in his pressing leaving us open. And, in my opinion, Fred's moments were more good than bad. Well, a lot more good than bad, honestly.
I really don't think so. I think forwards are judged on moments, defenders are judged on their lack of moments, and midfielders are judged on something else entirely. When you watch great midfielders of yesteryear what's noticeable about them is not the moments but their consistent influence. They're the brains in the team and to me they're judged on an aggregated overview of their decisions and how they shaped the game accordingly.

Penalty aside I still thought he was awful today

Killed so many of our attacks. Multiple times there was someone free on the wings yet he'd keep hold of the ball and get tackled or just play a mind boggling wayward pass. Very sloppy.

Yup I thought he was good today.

Won the wall back a lot
Kept the ball moving well
Nearly scored

Penalty was utter bullshit.

Of course some people made their mind up on him a long time ago so I'm sure we'll see negative reviews.
It's hilarious to read the contrasting comments, though. Some of us think he was good & others think that he was atrocious. There is no middle ground.

In reality it was somewhere in the middle? I am not sure now.

Not unlucky with the pen, leaning in like that gives the ref the chance to blow.

Poor today. Really don’t see it with him at all. McTominay is far more reliable.

I'm very surprised by the positive reviews. I thought he was shite apart from winning some balls.

Herrera plays instead of him and we win.
Yeah cause Herrera would score the goals we needed to win the game.

What a comment :houllier:

he did it twice that impressed me, in that he retained the ball by turning away from his man coming behind him.

I think it is a promising display.

Fred was just fine today. Exact same performance ina victory and the same critics would be raving about him. Think he has come good now.

Are you serious? He did everything Herrera does and nearly scored as well. We lost because we didn't take our chance and DDG made a mistake at the other side.

No where near as bad as some of the comments are making out, I thought he did well and kept us up the pitch, like his energy and work rate. That said, he is definitely clumsy and whilst i thought the pen was harsh, he shouldn't have put himself in that position.

Mixed bag, some very good moments and some equally shit moments. I don't know what to make of him, if he was 19 I'd be excited but he's in hid mid 20's.

Thought he was good today. Had a few bad moments but did well overall and is showing his quality.

People saying he had a bad game just need someone to blame because we lost.

Thought he was the best of the worst today, he saved a third tracking back , and showed some deft touches and quick turns, even though he was unlucky with the penalty gift against him, got to say he's starting to show promise.

He was statistically the best midfielder on the pitch and third best player in our lineup (behind Shaw and Lukaku but people are only looking at the penalty.)

4 tackles
3 interceptions
1 aerial duel
Second most touches of the ball on the field -84
Third most attempted passes on the field-57
Second highest pass completion on the field-86% (joint with Shaw and behind Ozils 91.2%. Greenwood got 87.5% but only touched the ball 11 times)
1 key pass
1 throughball
2 attempts at goal

I thought he was our best player today. Won the ball back a lot, and offered a lot in terms of control. Lacks consistency though.

In a million years that wasn't a penalty. Had the ref just waved it off there wouldn't be a single comment after the game from either set of fans. It was a nothing challenge.

Thought he played well and his ability to dribble and transition from defence to attack is why I'd like to see him play instead of Matic.

He was certainly not awful.

He's just way too sloppy and ends up ruining all his good bits of play by either messing up a simple pass or ball control or dribbling into a blind alley. And as others have pointed out in midfield that's like the cardinal sin, especially when we have Pogba who is loose in some of play too. The more conservative style is needed for balance.

Fred’s game by numbers vs. Arsenal:

86% pass accuracy
12 ball recoveries - most on the pitch
10 final third passes
4/4 accurate long balls
4/5 tackles won 3 fouls suffered
2 interceptions

An accomplished performance that shouldn’t be overshadowed by that penalty.

Like I said match day thread... Unfair criticism.

Thought he was our brightest player overall and unlucky to concede a very soft pen.

Did alright. Good touches in midfield but I thought poor decisions in final third. I didn't think it was a penalty either.

I thought he played solid, but he can be quite shaky in possession at times.

Mixed bag.

I thought he was very good again. The penalty decision was an absolute disgrace. To blame him just suits some peoples agendas

He was out most comfortable player in possession. Most touches and highest pass completion. Managed to get out of some tough situations today, too.

Whilst soft it was clumsy by him. Gave the ref a decision to make. Did well at winning the ball back. Thought he didn't do as well with the ball esp first half but overall good game

He had 2 great turns, but I get really nervy when he has the ball.

Another posted mentioned it, but I feel the same way in that he seems to be prone to getting tackled far too easy.

I think thats a preconception based on his previous performances more than anything. Although the stats prove he used the ball as well as anyone, you are still nervy and thats reflected in your view of his game. Likewise, Lindelof is still trying to shake the stigma of 'having a mistake in him.' Games like today, though now rare for him, reinforce that misconception. He makes mistakes and it brings it back to square one, despite him making no more mistakes than other top class defenders.
