A sign of how far we have fallen when a former winger now makeshift fullback who is beyond mediocre and should have been moved on years ago being rewarded with the captaincy. How am I supposed to have faith in Ole with decisions like this?

Disgusting.

Please for the love of god no, how is the worst player in the team supposed to motivate? Pure bollocks

Bryan Robson
Eric Cantona
Roy Keane
Gary Neville
Nemanja Vidic
Wayne Rooney
Antonio Valencia
Ashley Young
Club is on the road to nowhere.

The last two are laughable, both past it wingers and adequate full backs, who both forgot how to cross a ball. Valencia who barely spoke in English as captain of an English PL side. Young who every time he does something wrong blames the person stood nearest to him. Then we wonder why this team is not motivated.

Oh stop being so dramatic, Young is one of the senior most members of the squad, who would you like it to have gone to?

It’s a ceremonial appointment FFS, don’t read too much into it

LVG's last season with Rooney I think. "My captain shall always play".

Thought it was. Not sure any other club has ever had a scenario like that, especially for so long and with multiple players. Very odd. Young doesn't even strike me as a leader. All I ever see him do is hit his hands together.

Like, I don't know. Anyone else apart from the one that 99% of fans are sick seeing on the pitch?

It's perfect, he's already one of the shittest wingers and fullbacks we've had, now he can add captain to that list.

How have we kept around a player that even in his actual position in his peak was never good enough for us? For 9 fecking years?

And not only that we've made him captain!

I heard it was rock, paper, scissors between Young, Rojo and Sanchez

I hope that he is watching Beckham today. That is called "a cross"

Anyone else heard a rumour he kicked off in the dressing room over something before the end of the season? Throwing things about having a tantrum?

I read he was given stick for congratulating Aston Villa on their promotion. United has such a toxic following. Young needs to be shipped off, but the treatment he's getting by so called supporters on social media is embarrassing.

'supporters' who have never even been Manchester.

Ok, Young was terrible last season, but prior to that, I think he was a serviceable part of the team (the definition of squad player, if you will.) As well, he's always struck me as a great ambassador for the club, and not in a cringey way like Lingard. That being said, I can't understand why he would be our captain moving forward.

I guess in a team with no stand out leaders, you might as well give it to the oldest guy whose been with the club the longest

I guess in a team with no stand out leaders, you might as well give it to the oldest guy whose been with the club the longest, same way Valencia this season.

Let him hold on to it until a real leader emerges, either through the current squad or through purchases.

When your old guard consists of players like Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young it's no surprise an average clogger who has never shown an ounce of leadership gets the captains armband.

Depressing how much of a lack of leaders we have. There was a point under Fergie where we had like 10 international captains.

Yep, that's obviously the situation at the moment. We don't have a proper leader, so Young gets it until one of the new guys proves themselves (both to the manager and to his teammates) suitable.
