WWC19 | Final: USA v Netherlands

STOP HURTING ALEX MORGAN!!

I have such a crush on her:drool::p

Still honestly can't believe we've had 3 penalties and missed all of them. How shit can you get.

People saying it's not pen surely just didnt see the contact? Once you see it, it's stonewall.

Never a pen.

This ‘clear and obvious’ interpretation doesn’t seem to be adheared to, with everything being analysed by VAR.

Because the French hate the English more
I for one love the show of unity here, especially as it is the anniversary of the vote to declare independence from the British Crown, which the French were gracious enough to help us accomplish.

Vive la France!

I can't see how it is. The defender has prevented the striker from striking the ball.

Aye, once you see the contact it's a clear penalty. Some of the angles the ref had made it a tricky call to make in the heat of the moment but it was pretty obviously the right one.

I knew that stupid booking for Bright in the first half would come back to haunt us. Wasn't even a yellow

Didn't she get booked for putting a forearm in someone's face? That was definitely a yellow.

We've played well. Our ladies are fighters. Really given this great US team a hard game.

Think they're blind to be honest. I'm having a very hard time seeing how it wasn't a "clear and obvious", to use their words, penalty when a player gets knee'd in the calf.

Still 5 minutes left. Need a Fergie time goal

The striker is looking to strike the ball. The defender clipping the strikers foot stops her from striking the ball. It's a clear pen.

We don't actually see CLEAR evidence of the contact though do we?

We can suspect it happened but a long way from being ''clear & obvious'' surely,

This is the first full women's match I've ever watched. Not a great penalty and I dont want to add insult to injury. It's nice to see the exposure the womens game has had during this tournament.

Our CBs will have a tough time with VAR

Every CB will. VAR makes any contact look dramatic, far more so than it actually is the majority of the time. Time will tell but I think it is going to remove a lot of the physicality from the game, alter the balance too much. Make it too easy to score and football loses that tension that makes it so engaging, not an era to be a defender.

US don't really wow me but they are incredibly functional, probably like Germany back in the day with their less great teams still getting to euro and world cup finals.

Great game. These girls are quality footballers. Am I also allowed to say that some of them are smoking hot?

The quality is still lacking. The passing from England has been abysmal and their set peices have been poor. USA have been pretty good to be fair, but have faded badly.

I didn't think it was. It was clumsy but completely unintentional. Didn't look like she made much contact either.

Still, as @0le said, she couldve got a straight red for her second one so fair enough

Tbh I still think if we had that 6ft+ keeper we've had all tournament we win this game. Both the U.S goals were scored because the keeper couldn't quite reach the ball.

Bonkers the actual top scorer didn't take any of them.

Would be like Harry Kane on the pitch and Dele Ali or Stones taking them.

You haven't even mentioned the new silly handball rule.

Yes we do. You can clearly see the angle of the strikers leg alter mid swing the moment the defenders leg comes into contact with the strikers.
You can see it from two separate angles. The reverse is even more obvious.

It's not unanimous so there is some degree of subjectivity in it. I don't think it was. Whatever...
How does a knee to the calf not equal a foul? The American tripped her whether she meant to or not and thus cause the English player to miss the ball. That's a foul, like in its most basic form.

Agreed. Not great football, other teams have looked better and been more fun to watch. The US just know their strengths, and know that no other team can cope with that.
