Ole had a better player than him but chose to let him go. McT is too inconsistent to be a mainstay in the team right now, but our midfield has been gutted to the bare bones so he has to start all the time. It's a shame to see him playing this badly as I think he's a much better player than this.
Fellaini? Because he didn't choose to let Herrera go

There is absolutely nothing wrong to have players like him in the squad.
McTominay is a fine player to come in and do a job every so often in the squad, but that's not the case. He's currently one of the key players, he starts every league game he's fit, which shows the fall in standards at the club.

Can't wait to see him leave, not good enough and never will be. The poster child for our mediocrity.

Fellaini offered far more and showed just as much if not more commitment on the pitch than this overrated darran fletcher workhorse cast off.

In the same amount of games fellaini scored 8 and made 3 assists and every team hated playing against.

In comparison the opposition probably just laugh seeing McT name on the line up which is why Nigel Pearson even said he didn't expect anything from our team on Sunday.

If this guy wasn't a local lad ''who gets it'' we'd be asking serious questions as to why he's the first name on the teamsheet every single week.

It seems some are coming around to McTominay after another performance like Watford away.

It makes my jaw drop seeing posters using terms such as "he's a beast", "McDominate", "love his aggression" and similar to describe this lad.

Those terms used to be associated with United players like Roy Keane and Nemanja Vidic. Beast, my fecking arse! Beast?! Haha.

Look, McTominay has performed better than I expected him to and I've had to eat my words a bit with him. I thought he wasn't good enough to be even a squaddie, here. I was wrong, he's good enough to be here. He's just nothing more than a bench/rotation option who will always put in a shift.

I love Scott, but he's not been at his best recently. Probably needs a rest.

Against the teams that defend deep we really should have a more attacking player next to either Scott or Fred, anyway.

I like him, players like him have a place in the squad but we cannot build around him. Neither Soctt or Fred are going enough to be long term starters, and if Pogba leaves in the summer then we'll be in a position where we basically need a whole new midfield.

A couple of bad games and the usual idiots start moaning! Let’s forget how well he’s played in all the others! I do agree we need a better playmaker next to him though

All it takes is couple of bad games and he was never good enough.

Definitely strong to be calling for him to leave. He’s fought his way into our squad, and for now at least, absolutely deserves to stay here.

He’s obviously not one of the best midfielders in the league, the best thing since Roy Keane or better than Pogba and whatever ridiculous things I’ve read so far this season. He’d do well to establish himself as better than any of the three in Watford’s midfield last Sunday, but people have gotten carried away.

I'd argue we need 2 forward-thinking attacking midfielders against weaker teams (Pogba and another purchase). McT can just protect the defence and simply pass to more progressive players.

I’m not sure how his performance at Watford was much different at all to a regular Scott McTominay game. As a result, even I don’t get the veracity of the criticism he has received after that game. I don’t think he’s all that, but what was so bad about Watford particularly? Everyone is now criticising his passing against Watford, but he has been struggling to pass the ball well in pretty much every game this season. Was his passing top quality before or something?

It was a regular McTominay performance.

The improvements he has made are insane,. I didn't see this coming one year ago. I think the injuries last season and this season in the midfield, were a blessing in disguise, because they gave McT minutes and responsibility without having to take all the pressure.
Yes, he's done what you want from your players and taken the chance that came to him and done his best with it. He's only 23 so still plenty more time to improve even more.

Great to finally see some much needed leadership. His progression this season has been very satisfying
It is, some much needed steel and (acceptable) dark arts to his play. Very pleasing.

Somebody who just turned 23. Imagine him not being consistent throughout a first season hes a starter (with no experience next to him).

He obviously can improve, but hes no way just crap as some make out. I do think he should be a squad player, but when youre playing 50 games a season, being part of a squad is not a bad thing.

If this guy wasn't a local lad ''who gets it'' we'd be asking serious questions as to why he's the first name on the teamsheet every single week.
Who should start ahead of him?

Fact is we can talk about Mctomminay being nothing more than just a midfield defensive bully who lacks some passing ability -

The truth is that players like Herrera were nothing more than that either and if he was he hardly ever showed it more than in a couple matches a season if that. (Sure some may blame managers for this but he isn't exactly world class either is he?)

Mctomminay to me, has covered Herrera's poor and overrated United career. He has the potential to be more consistent for United than Herrera and can improve to get marginally better than him due to his passion for the club.

Herrera was one of our most passionate players. I agree that they’re at a similar level, I think Herrera was a bit more creative with his passing and crossing in particular but McTominay is better at taking the ball past players and has greater physicality. Ultimately, they serve a similar role, to obstruct the opposition, we now need a creative player to supplement that.

Very good point. There is no significant loss in quality if McT was his replacement.

Guy is a bum. 79% pass accuracy in the league this season for a player that hardly passes forward or tries anything creative or adventurous.

For comparison, Fred is a 88% and he passes forward consistently and tries to open up lines.

Is crazy how fickle our net based fans are. Two below par games and the player in not good enough and never has been.

Some sense of perspective would be really nice. Mctominay is vital to us this season, his absence was felt to a large extent when he was injured for a week.

He's young and inconsistent and this is really is first season of playing as a regular first team player. Let's be a little more patient and a little less fickle.

What a pathetic post. Remind me how many goals, assists and chances created Fred has?

Me saying Fred outperforms Mctominay in X (crucial) department doesn’t equate to me saying Fred is good. He’s just better than Mctominay and the day Mctominay gets shipped off to Sunderland or something (he wouldn’t be out of place) I’ll pop big bottles.

to answer your question though:

Fred in 11 starts and 3 sub appearances:

0 goals
0 assist
1.4 Key passes per game
averaging 51 passes per game
0.8 amount of times dispossessed per game
0.7 bad touches per gamer
2 tackles per game
1.4 interceptions per game

Mctominay in 16 starts:

3 goals
1 assist
0.8 key passes per game
averaging 48 passes per game
1.5 amount of times dispossessed per game
1.9 bad touches per game
2.3 tackles per game
1.4 interceptions per game

Mctominay is a “pashun” bandit and a punch the badge warrior and that’s ok and all but he can’t play ball.

Whilst it's too early to say that Fred & Mctomminay have come in to their own - they both do play those energy type midfielders that we need in the deeper areas of the pitch which make oppositions play much harder.

Now what we need is a playmaker in deeper areas ( no idea) & someone like grealish who can create further up forward in CAM but is versatile to play in CM.

This maybe wrong but in my opinion - the next test for Fred & Mctomminay is to see if they can compete with each other. Their roles and capabilities are too similar to have them play in the same team against teams that need breaking up; which isn't a bad thing for United.

Fred was the worst at this & really only got better when Mctomminay was watching his back on the other side aswell.

I think we can go without the whole Matic replacement thing & make these two focus on the defensive game for now.

That's why Fred outperforms him in majority of core midfielder aspects, right? and with less minutes played too

Mctominay would slot in perfectly at Luton Town.

Your agenda driven posts are truly awful. Scott is a great lad and part of the squad for the foreseeable future, you'll just have to suck it up.

I think Fred is better than McTominay too, but Scott isn’t as shite as you’re making out. But he’s massively overhyped on here of course.

He may be overhyped, but talking down on him like the poster you quoted should not be tolerated. I've even seen people in matchday or post-match threads saying he is back to the levels of your average Scottish player. Talk about stereotyping.

You know a player is really lacking in quality when the praise for him starts with "he's a great lad"

I've come to terms with United being a shite team with a bunch of shite players, Mctominay being one. I still reserve the right to state how bad some of them really are, like a midfielder that has less than 80% pass completion despite hardly ever playing the ball forward. You're the one that caught life when these facts were brought up, so maybe you need to suck it up.

We may be a "shite team with a bunch of shite players" but we also have some "shite" fans too, most of them pretend to be experts

"There's feck all wrong with supporting young, local lads coming through the academy".

No, there isn't.

This, however, is borderline mental illness. Levels of delusion I have never seen before in football fans, increasing by the week within our fanbase.

I agree with the overall sentiment. Not relevant nor will it stop Mctominay from being a very limited player though.

you got the stats for successful dribbles, accurate long balls and fouls won?

Yeah it’s ridiculous. The same people bashing him for 1 or 2 average/below average performances will be nowhere to be seen when he’s turning in MOTM games like he did against Leicester, Arsenal, Chelsea away etc.

He doesn’t though. Why don’t you produce the stats on dribbles, fouls won and accurate long balls? Because it will show up your agenda driven argument, that’s why

You can hate and troll on McTominay all you want. I questioned whether he was good enough 18 months ago and he has proved literally everyone wrong. He has the mentality to be a mainstay here, so you’re just going to have to live with seeing a lot, lot more of him.

To be honest all he has to do is learn how to pass the ball to a teammate. And he needs a better first touch, better technique, better awareness and a leadership mentality. But apart from that yeah why not.

McTominay is a decent player. Can we improve on him - definitely. But that's not an urgent requirement. He is actually not a bad squad option to have unlike Lingard.

I find it comical every time people use "agenda driven" as if that somehow invalidates posts. Every post here is agenda driven.

I came in this thread shocked at how bad this guy is at passing a football, got asked for something else and I provided that information along with other core indicators for a central midfield player, but at no point did I volunteer to become redcafe's statistician, especially regarding a piss poor player like Mctominay.

I'll humor you though:

Fred:

dribbles per game - 1.5
fouls won per game - 0.8
long balls - 3.1

Mctominay:

dribbles per game - 1.5
fouls won - 2.6
long balls - 3.5

so add these to the numbers I provided above and Fred is still outperforming this guy in majority CM core competencies. Unless you think fouls won and long balls per game are more important than passing accuracy, key passes, bad touches and amount of times dispossessed. Oh, and Mctominay has 1409 minutes played. Fred has 1048. So Fred is doing better than Mctominay with roughly 6 hours (?) less of play time.

And again, I don't even think much of Fred, which shows how much of a weak link Mctominay really is.

It sounds agenda driven in the sense you’re saying McTominay is “piss poor” and “should play for Luton”. I mean, they’re just hyperbolic statements. This comparison you’re making with Fred is flawed too, because it works against Fred in exactly the same way you’re saying with more minutes he’d be even better than Scott. If Fred was shit for another 6 hours, which he is capable of being, that would dilute his stats further, yes?

Dribbles and fouls won arent the most important components to a top midfielder’s game, no, but they’re important nonetheless. I mean a foul he “won” resulted in a penalty against Palace. That’s a key contribution.

Aye, you don’t rate him at all, that’s cool. For me the jury is out whether he’ll reach Darren Fletcher’s level. But I’ll wait and see. He needs a good game against Newcastle tomorrow. Fingers crossed for him and the team.
