Top flight footballer in minor scuffle abroad.
Scum press try and hype him up to sound as bad as possible.

Player gets off with a warning.

We've seen this happen so many times - let's move on.

Exactly. This attitude - how is that any different from Liverpool going all out for Suarez?
There are extreme extremes in this thread. The anti English Brigade are loving the attention, and revelling in being able to thrown one of our own players under the bus.

We know no facts, and he’s pleaded not guilty.

Then we have the overly zealous fans, who have started to delve into the realms of corrupt police.

There’s a middle road, that any rational fan should be on.

Let’s wait until we know more info, no doubt the club will be speaking to him, and in due course we will find out some facts. Until that point, he’s not proven to be guilty of anything and we should support one of our players.

Who needs enemies (opposition fans), when you have friends (own fanbase) like ours.

There's a massive difference between having empathy for a person getting caught up in a brawl, with a group of scum, who initiated and escalated the situation, compared to supporting a rat-faced scum bag who racially abused a fellow professional for no reason.
Ah damn I've already printed the free harry t-shirts and face masks.

It's very easy to tell which ones would have been defending Suarez on here.
First of all anyone has the right to defend Suarez also. You can condemn his actions but also support it, afaik we still live in a world where we are allowed to state our opinion.

2nd, the poster clearly didnt say that we should print free harry shirts, but that we should let Harry's incidence been dealt with by the law, as with any other person. Not sure why I as a fan need to put myself above the law and play the moral victim.

Maybe you could also avoid stereotyping an entire group of people?
Hey English are disliked abroad for a reason . Whenever you go abroad and people ask your nationality as soon as they hear you say Irish and not English the way way they treat you is amazing .

It's like night and day .

Unless he’s been racist then it’s really not the same is it. The Suarez t shirts were also done after he was found guilty of it and banned by the FA. Not the day after the abuse took place.

I wouldn’t massively jump to Maguire’s defence or have a go at him at the moment. What’s the point without having all the facts.

Same as saying you are Welsh. You can see the attitude change instantly in some places.

Saying that I've met mostly fantastic English people abroad - easiest way to enjoy your holiday is not be an asshat wherever you are from. Generally if you are spending money and behaving you will be looked after.

How should United punnish him for this?
Let him pay of part of his own fee with his salary?
No more captain?
Benched for the first few games?
At the moment, nothing.

Later, nothing.

We spent 80m on him, we are not giving up on him or benching him cause he might have hit a police. If it is serious he might get stripped of captaincy or fined a couple of week wages, but that is the worst it can happen.

Why do you think Greek police ‘target’ tourists? Perhaps because tourists behave badly and outside of the law?
Because they know they have money. I’ve been on the receiving end of it myself. I’m not saying that’s what this is, but in my experience, the Greek police treat tourists a lot more harshly than the locals, and it’s purely for monetary reasons.

I'm sure Welsh and Scottish would say the same when asked .

The reputation of English abroad is really not good and they can't all be wrong

Greek police are disliked as well for a reason. If Maguire had been arrested in France, Germany, Sweden, Austria or Switzerland to give 5 examples - I wouldnt be worried. Greece - now that is a completely different story

The facts as they have been reported by the media cast very little harsh light on Harry. A monetary penalty at worst and we all move on.

But I would recommend that high profile footballers stay away from bars during their playing career. They're a magnet for shitehousery.

It is August, so lets remember that... everyone within a 10km radius of that bar is now phoning the papers with their latest report;

" Yes I told Harry as the police took him away, not to worry we've sent for Keano to sort it out, if he's not available Eric said he would come over"
or
"I loaned Harry Maguire my shirt, his was a bit dirty"
or
"My wife's sister works in the Prison refectory she told my wife, who told me that Harry had two Weetabix for his breakfast today, but he didn't like the goats milk"

its all going to come out, can't hide this sort of thing!!! ;)

Weird, when I tell them I'm English they say how much they love us and hate those Germans/Russians *wink wink*.

That's what I thought. It just sounds like a minor punch up, that's it.

We've not heard Harry's version of events and I suspect he'll say little or nothing about it in public, which of course allows for all this speculation (however outlandish). He certainly won't be talking until the legal processes have concluded and then I imagine his legal team will be the people speaking on his behalf.

Bribery is the only charge to worry about. But a pissed up offer of money is not the end of the world. Nobody has died.

Absolute bullshit. Throwing every member of a police force in the same bag. There are poor police officers in every country, like there are good ones. Typical northern European ethnocentricity where you think you are superior.

Maybe he needs to meet a quota of headed goals to waken him up or is that just completely unfair.

I've been many times and as a former police officer I take offence. I used to be a police officer in Serbia, known for corruption and a lot of shady things but not one of my colleagues at my division fit that narrative, we took our job very seriously. Just absolute bullshit from a person who isn't even from Greece.

Happy days, looks like it'll end up being a slap on the wrist. When the news broke my first reaction was "What an idiot" swiftly followed by "That sounds out of character for him". Given what I read today it seems he is pretty innocent in this - not denying that he assaulted someone, but was defending his sister and mates and tried to pay a fine - not a bribe. Can't fault him for any of this.

Yes but he’s up against the Greek judicial system. There’s also no actual evidence that he assaulted someone

This is a problematic post. He assaulted someone but is simultaneously innocent of any blame as he may or may not have done so for a particular reason which as things stand cannot be confirmed and is entirely speculative.

Defending united and his sister at the same fight. I like him more now. Give him a pay raise.

Not the first time you have appeared prejudiced towards English people.

Quite sad actually.
If me thinking that British players tend to be ridiculously overpriced and overrated then sure I am prejudiced. Ah and I also think that this obsession that some British players have with drinking stinks of lack of professionalism.

If he’s defending his sister whose supposedly be assaulted (stabbed!?) then you can understand why he’s completely lost his head.

Rival fans, what’s the bet they are of the Scouse variety?

So why mak your post then? It doesn't get more speculative than that?
