The luxury of having him on the bench. Great player in great form. Can’t believe we let James play ahead of him and Pogba.

Obviously I'd like him to be our first choice CF at this point but given the fitness congestion, his age and the fact that he only made 22 appearances for PSG last season, I wouldn't be overly critical of Solskjaer for managing his gametime either.

To all the people who were raging and venting calling this a useless signing and such I told you as long as he's fit he'll be useful. If you seriously thought this was a bad signing you criminally underestimated the abilities of Edinson. Even at nearly 34 he's better than most strikers out there. Hope he can stay injury free rest of the season though I doubt it.

Exactly this. Think we've managed him well so far and he's contributed cos of this.

Such a great option from the bench or for rotation

Anyone know how many minutes he played so far and his assists/goals ratio compared to others?

As a PSG fan, I can tell you every real PSG fan loved him.
Even if he isn’t the most technical striker, he is amazing in many aspects

I am genuinely gutted we’ve signed him so late in his career. Everything about him is fantastic, and I think Ole should just trust him and start him every week.

Worked alright with Ibra who was older that Cavani and both keep themselves in fantastic shape.

Ole has dealt with him well so far. He isn’t fit enough to play 90 minutes every 2 days, he’s not going to play as well against a high line as he’s not got the pace for it.

I’m sure he’ll start at home Where teams will sit a bit deeper, but people expecting him to start every match will be disappointed when he gets injured.

Our best signing this season. He brings so much into the team.

So many in redcafe were moaning about signing a player who has past it. Happy that he is proving them wrong.

Needs to get a consistent run of starts now.

Don’t see how he couldn’t handle three or four in a row now. Manage him in the second half of the matches, but allow him more time to contribute.

If he can stay clear of injury for a couple more weeks you’d imagine he’d be fully match fit and able to start on a more regular basis. Him central with Martial and Rashford either side has to be our best bet.

Greenwood can come in for either of them then.

A United fan, a team of Hughes, Cantona, Sheringham, SOLKSJÆR, hell even Ruud... thinks only fast players are good against high lines.

Sometimes you lot utterly bewilder me.

One thing is sure - the way the things are going he should and probably will play more and start more games than many were expecting when he was signed

 and they aren’t all the same players you buffoon.

we saw against Everton the other night he struggled when they pressed up high. He was pretty awful until the moment martial got him the ball near the box, then he came alive.

so yes in my opinion Cavani would struggle against aggressive quick defenders.

Yet he hasn’t in his entire career and Martial has, you plum.

For 30 minutes Everton barely got out of their half, so much for “high line”.

So you’d rather play him away to Leicester than wolves at home who sit back and counter?

glad you’re not manager

I’d play him in every game that I feel, along with the player and fitness coaches that his body can cope with; cause he’s clearly far and away the best number 9 at the club, in a club that plays with one lone CF.

Didn’t he just take a pressing Hasenhütti side to the cleaners?

He just played 90 minutes 2 days ago, and we play again in another 2/3 days. How many matches do you expect him to play?!

that was my whole point before you went on some ludicrous rant about the 99 team.

we have to be selective and careful as he’s prone to muscle injuries - he will play against wolves.

As a sub though, he came on at half time.
Cavani isn't fit enough to play that much in such a short time otherwise Ole would use him, he isn't blind to his quality

No, your point was that he’s not good against high lines.

Hughes, Cantona & Ruud played in our 1999 team. New one.

Of course you have to be selective, but that wasn’t your point. For some bizarre reason you wanted to make out he isn’t good against high lines.

I’d personally have played him today as it’s a harder game and he’s part of our best 11, and rested him v. Wolves. Personal preference there though, there’s no right or wrong I don’t believe so hopefully he does start vs. Wolves.

I’m not saying he should/can play every game. Just arguing that a United fan thinking a player isn’t good vs. a high line because he’s not rapid is an odd one.

@Regulus Arcturus Black read the whole post. I said he’s been smart with picking the right games and rotating him.

resting him for Leicester where he would struggle more and playing against a deeper wolves line is smart management.

whether you like to accept it or not he isn’t quick and will find it harder having to run 30 yards to score than getting it in the box for a quick header or tap in like Southampton.

Cavani has already had a muscle injury with us which kept him out against Leipzig, City and Sheffield.
With his injury record we have to be very careful and can’t afford to start him in too many games.

I’ve read the whole post and think you’re wrong.

Cavani works against any defence, he’s pure class.

I’m not arguing about game management, I just don’t believe there’s anything in him “being better for Wolves home than Leicester away”.

The way I see it is that it's all fitness related. Cavani is more than good enough to play vs any type of defence or tactics. He is that good.
If only we got him 2-3 years ago instead of Lukaku

Well it's safe to say at this point that he's hands down the best number 7 we've had since Ronaldo

Nobody has said he’s not class. So you think speed makes no difference at all then?

it reminds me of the home game recently where he was through on goal 1v1 and ended up chipping it from miles out and hit the bar because he was getting rapidly caught up, that’s exactly what I mean.

He is still fast(ish) but most importantly he is clever enough to always be a problem vs the high line
Nobody has said he can’t run in behind at all.

let me ask you this, will Cavani prefer to run 30 yards to get a shot away or just make a quick movement and get a shot/header away?

my whole point was ole has managed his games well by picking him in matches that’ll suit him more, but apparently that makes no difference as every game is the same:wenger:

I agree with the fact that Ole has managed him well. No complaint there.
For me it's always been about his fitness and not necessarily tactical. He is too good for that IMHO. Certain games will suit him more but if Ole could play him like he does with Bruno or Maguire then he would have, without a doubt

Ahhhh you mean his signature move that he’s done his entire career even in his prime fast years?

Go have a look at his best goals, see how often that chip pops up.

And yes, I think often having a calm composed head around the speed merchants and flick merchants (Bruno) is a massive advantage in a counter attack, against a high line. Some of the legend names I mentioned were incredible in our counter attacking for just that reason.

There’s an entire section in this following vid of him just chipping keepers for fun, I’m guessing vs. PGS he was simply convinced he’d score and feck me it was close to being our goal of the season.

He seems to like keeping himself fit, just posted a few videos on his Instagram story working out on the treadmill and bike.

Feeling fat as feck sitting here exhausted after our game today gobbling down crisps and drinking whiskey

Came in an straight away his ability to move and link up play created a goal. It is hard to not contrast that to Martial who's link up play in general has been 'really bad' to 'getting a little better' since lock down. Conundrum to be honest, I like that off the bench action but he's also a huge player for a full game and integral to the first team. Maybe we should go on a 90min/20min rotation in the packed game weeks?

Not since lockdown since the beginning of the new season, free lockdown for the last part of last season he was on incredible form in pretty much every asset of his game.

Cavani? Sorry I don't get who you're talking about. If we're talking Martial's link up play, it is basically a first year apprentice work in progress and has been since we locked the PL down last season. He came out of that lock down and made people sit up and say "okay we've got something to work with here". Anything beyond that is a complete fabrication of what happened in an attempt to make his all-round game look better than it is/was. His level at the moment has reverted to type, like a first year apprentice in most trades.

You’re misremembering just how good Martial was after lockdown. He was holding the ball up with serious strength, laying it off, scoring amazing goals. He wasn’t middling to good, people were thinking he’d finally hit his potential not ‘oh this might be something to work with’. It’s less people are trying to make it look better than it was, more you’re downplaying it to prove a point.

No, I absolutely am not. Acting like that was some sort of inter-dimensional dominant level that he reached does a huge disservice to Martial and his current form level (which is worst than a PL level striker at the minute). You can go to his thread and read up and discuss, even last year during that form period I maintained that his was not an elite level he had reached merely a level at which we could now work with him up front. Trying to revise history and act like it was elite now does him and the team a disservice. Learning to play as an elite level striker in the premier league is a process and a path he must travel in stages. We're at first year apprenticeship stage and the reversion to type with current form also proves that. To tie it into Cavani, he's been at an elite level for years and to expect Martial to provide that only a mere year into his tenure as a striker under Ole is complete folly (ole, folly :lol).
