Really? made up? hmm, So conversations about Maguire's lack of pace and intelligence to compensate it were never retorted by just needing a better centerback partner to complement him? Sorry, sounds eerily similar to the same warped sense of reality that has him some juggernaut of a CB. Just thank God Jones is still at the club to make a side by side comparison. I know some would have jumped anyone trying to compare them otherwise.
Needing better CB doesn't mean Lindelof was blamed for Maguire mistakes, it means Lindelof was not good enough and we have to upgrade that position. Now that we have Varane, if we say we need good CB as his partner, that doesn't mean Maguire and Lindelof are blamed for Varane's mistakes. It's just upgrading weaker player with stronger player.

"We need better CM than McTominay" doesn't mean all the Fred's mistakes and lack of ability is blamed on McTominay. It means McTominay is weaker CM and we should upgrade that position.

Not sure why some shit account is posted on caf.

Maguire attacked the ball and would have cleared it but Fred got to the ball and made weak attempt to clear the ball.

No he wouldn't. He just causally moved towards the ball which he had no hope of winning it. He wasn't responsible for the goal but his movement was dumb considering the player was already marked by Matic and Fred.

Check the replays and reverse angle, he was in line of the ball, Fred got to the ball while he was losing balance. If not for Fred, Maguire would have got to the ball. So he wasn't marking our own players like that dumb twitter account wants everyone to believe. He made movement as per the flight of the ball, which was towards the left side of Fred.

He's fecking shite. The Maguire,AWB,James window was a disaster..Least we made a profit on James, we'd be 60 million down trying to get rid of the other 2.

What a terrible player

Because of a still frame photo which proves nothing? You realise he blocked the initial shot from going in straight after that right?

I guarantee that if he'd have been Lindelof, Varane or Dalot for that goal he'd still be getting blamed for it here.

Did he push Matic who in turn pushed the Brentford player and it started to cascade? I remember him wrestling Shaw to the ground once and us conceding.

The video is even worse. He was free and there was no need at all to go and show his team mates affection by hugging them.

I don't know if its me or what but everytime a long ball comes into the box, Maguire to me looks like he is in panic, pushing our own players, holding opponents and not really winning the ball like we hope.

I actually do not feel comfortable with him in our defence at the moment, from defending to even passing, he gets the ball and passes to Telles who is pressed and 2 players around him, when Maguire could make an earlier pass.

Lindelof and Varane has looked the best partnership so far this season, I would give them a run.

I don't think Maguire has become a bad player overnight, but he has had a dodgy start to the season and shouldn't walk back into the team. Fully expect Lindelof to start f-ing up and he will be back in, but worth a try.

He literally stopped the ball going in the net.
He didn't stop it though. It bounced off him went across the goal and still went in.

If he positions himself properly he gets his full body in the way and stops it completely. The reason he's not positioned properly is because for some reason he goes right up behind two of his own players where he can see and do nothing.

He was totally free, all he had to do was stay where he was and he stops it by moving a yard.

Or if he wasn't standing flat footed again, he should be getting in front of Fred and heading it clear.

Competely right. EIther he is at the front of that pack to challenge for the first ball (where he should be) and tells the other Utd players to move before the ball comes in, or he hangs back more for the possible knock on. He almost takes himself out of the game by his woeful positioning

There is an agenda against the guy. Everybody who isn't a fan boy of this so called "fluid" Varane-Lindelof partnership gets slated. Im not saying he has been playing well but we spent a lot of money on Bailly, Lindelof (and Varane) and we are leaking goals from all positions of the defence (Shaw and AWB were not cheap too) He should have never been made captain IMO. That should go to a senior player in the squad or a consistent performer (leaving Bruno or Ddg).

But the facts state since the start of the 2020-21 season, we concede more goals with Maguire in the team. It can't be coincidental as that is a long stretch to review.

We lost to the Dippers 0 5 (Pogba was sent off). Got dominated by City (Bailly OG). Lost to Watford 1 4 (that was the game he actually f... up and got sent off). Lindelof was also a part of all those games as well. Refering to a stat just because it helps an agenda doesn't do a lot to prove your point. Once we get a run of clean sheets then maybe. We were very lucky in the cup against Villa, we were very exposed in the league against Villa as well and we should have been losing against Brentford in the first half. That was all without Maguire.
But I said it before we actually need a proper CB even of Championship quality because half of our defence can't even do the basics right.

Swap his part with Varane and I bet you would be saying nothing but complaining about Maguire's positioning instead. He's just the scapegoat here at the moment.

To be honest Fred should have dealt with the first ball better, but he's a clown, his attempted bicycle kick clearance in the first half would tell you that.

With Maguire, he did something he shouldn't have done, for some reason he chose to move behind his own players and lost sight of the ball, that stopped him from being able to be in a position to react and defend the second ball properly.

It's nothing new from him. His general awareness and ability to read danger and position himself accordingly is just not good enough.

Varane has shown him up with his recent return. If he wants to be a backup centre half then great...I prefer Victor and Varane and tbh...that Kilman signing could be inspired.

You may be right. I have noticed it too. He looks panicky and hurried. I mean there is no need for him to go for it, trying to push forward. He has been involved in too many mistakes. I mean even before that under no pressure he headed to a Brentford player.

Maguire and AWB have borne the brunt of it because they cost large sums of cash and are English. Plus, as fans, we're constantly reminded of what these players cost and what they supposedly can't do. It's a feature of the media revelling in our failure and sensationalising every minor issue to create a 'crisis' because it gets 'engagements'. Nobody gives a rats arse about Telles or Cavani, they're not big stories. They will come for Sancho soon enough, you've already started seeing the rumblings.

I would argue that over the last three seasons, Maguire has probably been one of our best players, all things considered, and yet look at the pages and pages of nonsense that gets written about him.

AWB has featured 99% of the time in a side that has finished 3rd and then 2nd. Yet to read some of the comments on here, he is the worst player to have ever played in the Premier League.

It all boils down to who the media decide to criticise. Most people on here have worse than no clue, so will constantly be left just parroting what they hear on the television.

Case in point, Dalot yesterday. Average at best. Two bad mistakes leading to good chances for the opposition and nothing, absolutely nothing at all going forward in a game we had 70% of the ball. Funny though, that I didn't hear constant references to his supposed flaws. I didn't hear any criticism when he shanked that cross into the stands or when he gave the ball away in dangerous areas twice. Had that been AWB, they would have spent 10-minutes at HT slowing it down, freeze-framing it, telling you all what a terrible player he is. Yet instead, Keown decides, for some bizarre reason, seemingly again to make a point, to give Dalot man of the match.

I'll remind everybody again. Maguire is one of the first names on the team-sheet for a very good England side. Maguire has captained a side to 3rd and 2nd-placed finishes in the last two seasons, a side which has featured AWB the vast, vast majority of the time. If they were half as bad as this forum makes out, how on earth did we manage to achieve that?
This is probably the best and most logical post on this entire thread. There are way too many muppets who think they know a thing or two about football but they really don't. They just repeat what others say. it's a heard mentality. Maguire has been our best defender since he arrived. He's had dips in form when he's been rushed back from injury, but overall he's been good. What he needs is our supporters standing behind him. His confidence is shot right now. Some will argue that as a professional footballer he should be able to ignore all the abuse. Sorry, but he may be a professional footballer, but he's also human. It's also a hell of a lot easier to ignore the abuse if it's coming from rival fans. But the abuse he's receiving is coming from our own "fans". Bottom line is, if you look for the bad you will find it, and that's what people are doing with Maguire. I've even seen people who have blamed him for the goal Brentford scored. What? He's been a massive scapegoat. Just read through these comments. I agree that he's been out of form and he does need to earn his spot back into the squad. But on form, he's head and shoulders above Lindelof. So what we need is for Maguire to find that form again and it's going to be a hell of a lot easier for him to do if our supporters try lifting him, not kicking him when he's down...

I think he's been told you go attack the ball, instead he attacks his team mates. Even against Brentford, when he came on, our defence started to panic more.

That header is something he does all the time, he cannot find another United player when he wins a header.

He made a few lazy passes as well.

This is quite possibly the dumbest post I have ever seen. It's a zonal marking system. I suppose Matic is a donkey too? WHat about Martial?
Not as dumb as maguire being a good defender
Is this also zonal marking?

This is the part I really, really don't get. It's like some of out fans are enjoying his poor form at times this season, I just don't get it.

I am generally only really critical about a player if I feel they aren't putting it in. I have been critical of De Gea because I feel his lack of bravery costs us goals. I have been critical of Rashford because I feel he believed his own hype for a period. Even now though, I just feel sorry for Rashford. I have actually seen a definite effort from him to press harder and run more in games, it just hasn't happened for him and I am pleased he got the goal on Wednesday.

Maguire, however, has always given 100% for Manchester United and put his body on the line, as has AWB, and yet they seem to be the go-to whipping boys the minute there is the slightest hint of trouble. Not one player in our squad has been close to their best this season, because we have issues as a team, it's not about individuals at this point.

I remember a game last year when our opponent scored a late equalizer off a corner kick. Matic was closest to the player who won the header yet Maguire took the blame. "The masses" were claiming that as captain he should do anything he can to win that ball even if he has to take out Matic to get to it. Then in this instance, when he does try to win a ball at all costs he is criticized for going through shaw to try and get a ball. So which one is it? You can't have it both ways. I remember this one and it was a silly mistake by him when Shaw was in position to clear. He's not a perfect defender. Nobody is. Bottom line is Maguire needs our support right now. On form he has been our best central defender over the past 3 years. Now his confidence is at an all time low and I don't blame him one bit. How would you do at your job if every one of your co-workers were yelling at you and scapegoating you for everything going wrong with the company you work for? Funny how people are all of a sudden trying to claim Lindelof is doing so much better yet De Gea is having to make more saves than ever. Bottom line is that our defense isn't the problem. It's our midfield. But scapegoaters are gonna scapegoat...

Some of our fans would rather be right than see us improve. I was also critical of De Gea and have seen several instances where basic keeper skills would prevent a goal or goal scoring opportunity. But I wasn't booing him and calling for his head. If he's on the field I support him. And this year he has been playing really well and actually getting better at the basics I've been so critical of (positioning being the main thing). I've still seen instances where his bravery should be in question, but for the most part, he's been good this year. Maguire on the other hand hasn't even been given a chance. Our supporters act as if he is the one who set his price. Get over it. Be upset with Leicester and blame Maguire for things he's in control of. And stop scapegoating him. My god, the things he gets blamed for are unbelievable. And without him in the line up we've still been conceding just as many chances if not more. Yet the defenders are getting praised. The agenda on the majority of fans is pathetic. they need to start thinking for themselves and stop repeating whatever they are told on The United Stand...

He needs to focus on his job. It looks like the negativity is affecting him concentrate. I think he is a good captain when the team is on form, however, he is a pretty hopeless captain when the chips are down. I hope he gets a massive confidence injection soon.

I would prefer another captain. Someone who has high standards, is verbal and makes few mistakes. Ronaldo would be favourite but he might not stay too long, maybe Bruno would be decent.

Interestingly, we have kept 5 clean sheets in all competitions this year. Maguire has played 90-mins in all 5. Lindelof has started 4 of the other 5.

I appreciate that football isn't as straightforward as that, but again, you have to take into account that Maguire and Varane is a new partnership. They need time to get accustomed to each other. Might as well do that now, in preparation for next season.

The anti-English bias is an argument that doesn't hold up well and it never did. English press obviously cares more about English players and in a similar situation they'll get more coverage, but it's not inherently vile. If players play badly, they get criticised — like Martial does, like Sanchez did, like Di Maria did... if players play well, they'll get their praises — and Maguire was showered with praise at the end of last season & in the summer. Maguire is an awful form, certainly the worst of his career and he's probably the most out-of-form player in United at the moment (not counting the likes Mata that we simply haven't seen in years). He's also a player whose specific weaknesses are very apparent — and lead to en enormous amount of forced & unforced mistakes when he's off form or mentally unchecked.
