Watching the team without him - I'm pretty sure personally that Maguire will be back to normal next season.

This team has no ability to control and attack a team without getting countered back.
Next season we will most probably play with high line defence under ETH. I don’t think Maguire is good for that, as it will expose his weakness even more.

Apparently we haven't won any of the 6 PL games he's not started in this season. Hahahaha.

Maguire is a problem but clearly isn't THE problem.
They're all the problem. If the club had a spare 500m floating around then they could get rid of every single defender we have and bring in players who might actually give us a chance at winning things. As that won't be happening we have to look at who would be best kept if we bring in new players.

Maybe if we bring in a DM, CB and a competent LB Maguire would be worth keeping but it does say so much about him that he needs so much protection just to look competent himself. Either way. It's a shit show all round.

Maybe Im clutching at straws..... but seeing as how we are pretty much stuck with him hopefully a quality DM will stop him feeling the need to come barrelling out of defence every five minutes and leaving massive holes.
I think part of the issue is he tries to do too much instead of keeping things simple. He's constantly trying to help cover the fullbacks when they get caught out of position, which in turn means he gets caught out of position, making him look like a daft cnut. He needs to just focus on doing his job and there's probably a place for him in the squad, just not as captain though.

Unfortunately, we're stuck with him for the foreseeable. Here's to hoping that we massively improve defensively, from a collective standpoint under ETH, and Maguire can sort his head out. Hopefully he's stripped of the captaincy so he can solely focus on his game. A good start to next season would somewhat take him out of the spotlight. Anyone hoping he's shipped out will be left disappointed.

ETH is most likely to adopt a completely different style of play, unsuited to Maguires attributes. For that reason it’s likely that he’ll play less of a role as the squad progresses, possibly loaned out.

I actually think that stepping up is his instinctive approach, not the opposite — he's really aggressive in his playing style. The issue is that he's simply not good enough at judging the situation and does it literally all the time. When he's on form and United isn't on a downward spiral it can look great (one such game was his debut against Chelsea), but he's a calamity at this moment who can't even commit to his decision fully — while his positional awareness was always questionable. So him being to afraid of making a mistake leads to him undercommitting to his usual aggressive approach, which leads to more mistakes.
I think that's fair. You guys will watch more of your players than a neutral like me. But to expand what I'd noticed from his partnership with Varane earlier in the season was often Maguire would stay deep while Varane would push up trying to squeeze the defensive line forwards. So you had this disconnect between the pair which left big gaps for the opposition to exploit. And if you look at the offside won statistics, you have the high line gold standard at Liverpool in Matip and Van Dijk winning 1.3 / 1.4 per game, the comparable Dias at City winning 0.9 per game, Varane and Laporte winning 0.7 per game, while Maguire is down at 0.4 per game. What I should've been clearer on was the difference between stepping up to win the ball, and stepping up the defence to throttle the opposition out of the game. Varane great at the latter, Maguire good at the former.

I think ETH can set up his team to play to his strengths. Let's see how it goes. Making him Captain was a big mistake. He is not good enough to handle the responsibility because his game is so limited.

Now what strengths would that be? I'm genuinely curious. What does he do well as a CB?

I've said something like this in the DDG thread.

There's often more than 70-80 yards between DDG and Ronaldo, and also 30/40 yards of space between the defence and midfield for teams to play into. The space between the midfield and defence is to wide because the forwards push up and the midfield push up and the defence don't follow up the same.

If he has a keeper that forces him to push up another 10/15 yards, that space gets condensed and it would ultimately remove to oppurtunity for that ball to be played in front of him there so often.

And when it does get played he only has to make that decision to go out about 5 yards to knick the ball. He wouldn't have 20 yards of space in front of him where the striker can go to collect the ball, he wouldn't just go 5 and realise he's no where near it and have to start tracking back.

He'd just constantly get done because of his lack of agility and pace. He's entirely unsuitable for a high line.

Strikers would be salivating about him leaving his line then being unable to recover.

Got news for you...if you're holding a high line you are usually standing still. So speed is irrelevant if someone breaks the offside trap. I personally hate the offside trap and don't know why more teams don't beat Liverpool with more late runs from midfield. I'm also curious who ever said MUFC wants to play a high line?

Hmmm is he pulling a Pogba?

I'm kidding on both players part
Personally think he might be. Reckon he could be off after the shocking bomb threat. Who could blame him. Think it’s best for all concerned that he’s played his last game for us.

Whishful thinking but given the fact he attacked a police officer in Greece, I doubt a bomb threat has scared him off.

I mean, he literally presses up way out of the line and teams run straight in behind him. He’s only decent for park the bus football. Even then if you get to the byline and cut back he’s a statue.

It's not really possible for him to be off though, is it? No club will pay more than what....£30mill for him? If even? And even if they would, they certainly wouldnt agree to offer him anything near the wages he is on here.

Unfortunately, I think we're stuck with him and he's stuck with us.

That's where having a keeper who is ready to leave his line comes into play. You cannot have a player like Maguire in a high line, without a pro active keeper behind him. Moving up and condensing the distance between the defence and attack would make it harder to break through the press. Which means teams would have to resort to high balls over the top, then the keeper is there to hopefully mop these up.

The big reason why the Utd press just does not work and why teams have oceans of space in front of the back 4 and get through with one pass so much, is because the forwards press, the midfield half presses and the defence barely moves up and the keeper is stuck in his 6 yard box.

The only thing Maguire did wrong in that Liverpool game on the first goal was he didn't stay close enough with Mane. He hesitated. But going with him was correct "if" we are playing a high pressing game. The problem was that when Harry did that, both Jones and Lindelof should have both shifted to their left. Instead they stood there and then reacted too late (same with Dalot and Elanga). The other problem with that play was that in the formation we were playing, we weren't supposed to be holding a high line to begin with. We were supposed to be playing "park the bus". That goes on the central defender as he controls the line. So as soon as we are that high up, Harry has to go after Mane. But like I said, his biggest problem was that he hesitated and didn't get tight enough. But don't worrry...I don't expect you to actually understand any of this. you're just another muppet who has no clue how to actually play and you're just repeating what the other muppets told you...

Everything was wrong that game. The only tactical way we can beat them except a 10/10 counter attacking performance - even ole beat them and had relative success away at anfield doing this. If we tried that now I suspect we’d still concede one and the game plan goes out the window.

The fact you even think this group of players can beat this Liverpool at all whilst pressing high speaks volumes of your knowledge, but do keep going on like you know exactly what you’re talking about.

What kind of high line is static. It's football It's played in moments of transition and when you have a CB who turns like a truck with no recovery pace it's a lot harder to implement. Van Dijk since you raise Liverpool has fantastic recovery pace and it saves Liverpool often. Slow and poor positioning is a killer.

I think this injury is bullshit, it has to do with the bomb issue. Taking him off the spotlight.

Hopefully we can take advantage of this horrendous situation and ease him out of the starting XI and take him off the captaincy.
