Surely a manager needs to adapt. How many managers get exactly what they want? Compromises are made everywhere. That's why I said he needs to win any one of the smaller trophies and challenge for 4th place rather than challenge for the title.
Assuming United get 4th place every year, are United fans willing to go trophy-less for another 2-3 years?
At the end of last season, doesn't United have a clearly better squad than Spurs or West Ham? Isn't that one of the grievances against Ole/RR --- that the team was good enough to have at least come 4th?
United haven't lost any player they did not want to leave ... mainly those on large contracts who didn't play much. No quality was really lost. City lost Jesus, Liverpool lost Mane ... now that is losing quality.
No, it definitely wasn't better than Spurs or 'clearly' better than West Ham. The Greenwood situation is a £100m player lost for nothing, you can't replace him without spending a lot, and that's just to stand still from where we were. I wasn't Pogba's, biggest fan but he's still a £30m+ player (at worst) again lost for nothing.

Been very impressed with ETH. He has tweaked his tactics to suit his players, eg DdG no longer trying to play out, without doing a complete a 180 on his philosophy.
He has taken a huge risk, that could easily have backfired by dropping players that deserved dropping but are media favourites. The risk paid off and United appear much better defensively without the two players that he dropped.
I’d rate our transfer window pretty good. On purely footballing terms 8/10, maybe 7/10. A 9/10 would have required a deep laying playmaker and 10/10 also a pressing CF.
In terms of rating it from a holistic point of view as a club, with a business that needs to keep an eye on costs etc, and new manager who has his football ideology etc. Its a bit harder to judge.
I think we hugely over payed for Antony, but on the other side of the coin we got what appears to be a £50m LB for £15m so it balances out. But in an ideal world we’d have got Antony for £30-£50m cheaper. Casemiro really depends on the impact that he has but I’d say it’s a good deal for a marquee name in a position we lack, hopefully he, Martinez, Varane, will form a leadership core. Can see Martinez becoming a future captain in a few years.
Really don’t know how not getting FDJ will hinder ETH philosophy, but signing Erikson might prove to have been a very shrewd short term plan B

Good man management. Your staff might screw up once a while at the beginning, but with the right monitoring and guidance, the Unit will run better in long-term with everyone contribute (instead of just one-man army).
Professionals will work better when they feel appreciated.

Pogba, Matic, Greenwood played a fair bit and others were squad depth Cavani, Mata, Lingard etc even if they were not used. They were available.
And obviously losing Mane has impacted Liverpool.
Only because the board is backing him.
If the board told him no new signings this window then he wouldn't have dropped any players in fear of open revolt and a repeat of last season.
The buck always stops with the board, if they empower the manager then good things will happen otherwise the status quo shall remain.

Still a long way to go to the finished product, but we're getting better. In the process we're also learning that while the players were culpable for the shambles last season, they were only a small part.
Passing up to the final third is much quicker and crisper, beginning to see signs of an ETH team. A cohesive front three would have 3 or 4 by now.
Amazing how this team looks better with pretty much the same players. Ladies and gentlemen that’s what coaching does to a team .
That's easily the best 45 minutes I've seen from us in a very long time. We have patterns of play, a clear plan without the ball and occasionally put together lovely attacking moves.

I think his bollocking and his strict personality as made him overcome the 4-0 loss to Brentford and go on to win a few after it. Players seem to be buying into his methods which is good.
We have 3 new players playing in today's XI. Defence and midfield is the part that's looking solid. It also certainly helps that Varane is in form.
Our movement has improved considerably already. Far from perfect but players are giving the man on the ball options now
Not sure it's a case of being in form, I suspect its more a case of having a coach that can organize a functional defense. He's always been class...folks doubting his quality were mistaking our team dysfunction for a lack of quality on his part.

That's a second game in a row in which we park the bus and pray to God we don't concede the equalizer while hoping for a lucky break on the counter. I thought we're building for a team who controls the ball better ? We're not even fecking trying to say the least.
Most positive part for me is he seems to have adapted to this group of players and decided it's ok to not play out from the back totaalvoetbal just yet and just put results above all else.
True. And has been one of the most frustrating things to see for a long time. A lot to desire yet, but important building block for us.
I mean, if you want to ignore the entire first half where we did look very comfortable with the ball and without it, then fine. I get these second half performances are frustrating and if they're still happening in a few months then you will have a point, but your post doesn't seem to leave any room for patience in a developing project.

Deciding to play ugly football to grind results again like the previous managers isn't the right way to start your damn project as a manager. He should have been a little bit more brave and build his own style even if it didn't start well.
