he's way better than AWB was on the ball though

also at progressing the play either through dribbling or passing

all things that are essential in a modern day full back
Not sure that he is good enough with the ball. He is a lot worse than Shaw, who is probably excellent at ball retention to be fair. If he can be more effective than Shaw in final third, which is a very low bar, then he can hold the place though.

I loved it at the start of the match when Malacia was just looking at the crowd and you could see he was just absolutely loving every second of it. Such a humble, enthusiastic guy. Great signing. Love him already

okay yeah, but he is also ahead of Shaw when it comes to fitness, stamina, and pressing.. the intensity in his game is exactly what is missing from Shaw

True. There are games when we miss ability on the ball though. We will see as the season unfolds. At present he suits our very conservative style grinding out results

Shaw will come in at some point, and hopefully we see a reaction from him. He is a great player when he's on it (admittedly this isn't often enough).

Surprised he has settled in so quickly to the pace of the league. His attacking is still lacking but he was up there today willing to make runs. Would love to see how he positions when we dominate games

The positions he pops up in are hilarious, he's like a beagle off his lead.
This. He's so comfortable playing back to goal or in tight spaces etc to receive the ball etc. He doesn't alway pull it off but he has good technique and great enthusiasm/effort.

A few brainfart tackles and passes but can't fault his attitude. A lovely and interesting player to watch.

He seems a bit too risk averse in attack for my liking. Would like to see him run with the ball like Dalot does on the right flank.
Yes, maybe, but I think we need to give him a little time . It has taken Dalot a while to sort his game out- I feel pretty confident that Malacia will develop further too. He’s young, and at a big new club. Patience required on our part.

Patience is required. The back four are 23,23 and 24 years old and then Varane.

Signs of Evra MK2. But it's only about his 3rd game give the lad a chance. Shaw might still be the better player overall but he's already giving him something to think about. And he's a million miles better than Telles ever was.

£13m punt on a 22 year old left back not too sure what people are expecting already?

He's been really good so far. Let's give him some time show his ability or improve going forward.

The scepticism whether he has what it takes to play at the top is returning slightly after his last 2 games. I hope I'm wrong, but as it is, I think he is 't good enough once the honeymoon (and performance against Liverpool) fades.

Telling people someone is not good enough by spelling words incorrectly.

Just the 2 fat thumb typo's I fixed now or is scepticism spelled differently :nervous:

I can't overstate how much I love Malacia though, so don't mistake this for me slagging him off.

He has made some defensive mistakes in the last couple of games and he needs to show a lot more on the ball.

This is only his 3rd start in the PL, the Liverpool game may have shown otherwise but it's clear he'll need some settling period like many others before him. I think he has the tools to adapt and offer more in the next couple of months.

Wouldn't mind seeing what Shaw offers in comparison after the Arsenal game.
You have watched him for few years now and he hasn't offered much, and in the last year or so what he offered the most was being involved in the goals we conceede alongside his pal Maguire.

Shaw responds relatively well to competition. And also it's a new system. So I don't see the need to be closed-minded about it. Squad rotation is also important.

He's played 5 seasons of 1st team football, played a European final and he's a Dutch international. He's not exactly a 17 year old academy player.

He will become better, but he cant hide behind being young, he needs to step it up.

Thought last night was his worst performance for us to date. But…I’m sure at 1-0, on a yellow card he was perhaps just a bit more wary and perhaps even had instruction not to be bombing forward and rushing back.

I am really happy that he has come in to the team. He has certainly brought a commitment and desire to the back 4.

I’d expect him to play v Arsenal before shaw rotates for Europe…and he hopefully puts in a performance knowing he now has a challenge. He has risen to it before in fairness

I’m a fan. He’s solid and seems to have a lot of composure. A couple of errors but I’m sure they’ll be ironed out.

Haven’t seen much of his attacking threat yet.

Full of energy and aggression. Seems like a pretty solid buy.

I don't know why people are asking for Shaw to play. Malacia is performing quite decently and has more than deserved to be a starter, at least in my book. He will only grow from strength to strength.

People like his pasta videos. I can't see any footballing reasons to play Shaw given how terrible he's been.

Shaw is a far better player, any new player bias aside. My hope is that some genuine fear of losing his place might kick Shaw up the ass and get him back on form - as having the best version of Shaw in this current team would be far more beneficial to us than what we are currently getting with Malacia I reckon. Shaw has the ability to carry the ball up the field, excellent passing and crossing too, which would benefit Sancho a lot.

Again, I expect a lot of improvement from Malacia once he settles, but his performances have been over-praised to me.

Shaw has more quality with the ball at his feet but hes not proving to be a better player because too often hes caught on his heels, or jogging back, or positionally loose.

Its a bit like the Pogba argument from a lot of posters who see talent and equate that to being a good player. But theres so much more than that - being on your toes, mentally focused, positional awareness, aggressively defending, communication etc.

As I see it, Shaw is just better with the ball at his feet and crossing. Thats about it.

First time I disagree with you. I don’t think we watch the same Shaw

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I see far more upside in Malacia than Shaw. He's very comfortable on the ball and I like the way he picks out passes forwards and between the lines. He does his little ball-roll to create angles and moves it forwards. Shaw boils my p*ss with the amount of times he needlessly plays the ball backwards. I think Shaw is taking on a new level in people's heads because he's not been playing. He had a decent season once for creating goals and chances, but generally he's not produced a lot in an attacking sense and I don't think he's as good as people are now making out.

I also believe there is a tactical change that probably won't suit Shaw. Look at how our fullbacks tuck in now, Malacia operates far more centrally and this is where his ability to pass well and off the ball movement is looking good. How does Shaw translate into this role?

And this is all before we get on to the discussion of defensive ability. Malacia is far more tenacious and closes his man down quickly. Ok he has hiccups here and there, which more experience will iron out, but another issue for Shaw was his lack of intensity. He always allows his man time on the ball, allows crosses in with minimal pressure. Then he had recurring issues with switching off to runs at his far post for crosses.

I think people are forgetting the issues that Shaw has had for a long time and has never managed to iron out. Concentration, energy, intensity, bravery in playing forwards under pressure. All of these things I am already seeing Malacia do, and he isn't even settled in fully yet, I imagine.
