I don't know. It just feels like he has nothing left to achieve now. To see Messi chase meaningless stats / appearance records / CL goal or assist record for the sake of it, seems a little pointless.
I can't imagine Messi chasing meaningless stats. What I do see is he enjoys being part of this team, which he didn't with previous ones.

He has already talked about spending some time playing "as world champions". His perspective on it isn't "ok, we won it, the end" but "the beginning of four years as world champions".

It's a long trek, and the big question is how quickly he will become useless and -as I said- how they manage that, but he still has a lot to offer.

He has actually been a leader for these guys. Maradona adored Bochini, now imagine Enzo, Álvarez, Garnacho... they grew up with Messi being BPITW. Enzo Fernández wasn't even a teenager yet when he wrote a letter to Messi asking him not to retire.

Unless something points to him overstaying his welcome and doing more harm than good, I can see him showing up to defend the trophy.

I think its normal.

First trophy in 36 years where football is religion, Maradona is a god there and Messi just won their WC securing his status there too.

4 million people out partying, they don't know how long it'll be until the next trophy, a younger generation not born for Maradona or too young.

People will be getting wasted, alcohol will bring out the worst in people.

You also have the police resources stretched way beyond capacity, and when things are that big in numbers you will get the normal shit like people stealing, looting sometimes, fights.

People do shitty things because in those kinds of crowds nobody can find you or make you accountable too.

2 in 4 million have died and alcohol might be involved.

This is also a time where people feel they can justify racism more (a minority) discriminate e.g. the French football team because they won a trophy we need to remember it's just a minority.
I was in the city yesterday and the biggest problem was the lack of organisation.

The parade route changed 3/5 times over the morning, people were moving everywhere across the city (in + 30c heat) then moving back as the routes changed again and then to top it all off the team never made it into the city (where the majority of people were) due to the fact that the bus couldn't pass.

Then the police were sent out to disperse the crowds (like at Maradonas mess of a funeral) who were obviously pissed off that their government couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery (trust me they are useless) and get chased out of town by the police.

Ps I was surrounded by millions of people yesterday and didn't hear one racist chat or saying, those videos don't represent the majority of people in Argentina.

People will say we have them in every country. That's true, of course. However, Argentina has been the most graceless World Cup winner I can remember. From start to finish this group of players, as well as their support, have been chippy sows. This display is fully representative of their distasteful conduct during Qatar 22.

French people burning Argentina’s flag, didn’t see you complaining or saying disgraceful behaviour or nothing.

Being so mean spirited in victory, especially about someone who scored 4 past you, is a bit pathetic.
To be fair (in victory) he made his way over to Mbappe who was distraught on the pitch after the shoot out , comforted him and pulled him to his feet (with both showing mutual respect/ admiration IMO) .

I doubt Mbappe cares about the other stuff as he participates in making fun of opponents himself post game.

It's almost as if the actions of a small minority don't represent the vast majority.

Of course. But we didn’t complain of some stupid fans behaviour.
I was literally in the belly of the beast yesterday (All around Casa Rosada and literally on Plaza de Mayo as the helicopters flew over) as millions of people got fecked around (by the government and media) and the behaviour was impeccable.

I'm sure things started to worsen as I left as people started to realize that the team was never making it and they'd just waited 8 hours in the baking sun due to more idiocy at governmental level but I felt safe and secure and the general vibe was happy and fun.

The Martinez stuff has already gone too far. I get that some people didn't liked what Mbappé said when asked about South American teams, way before the competition started but he never said Argentina or Brazil weren't contenders. If you want to be respected you need to know how to win and how to lose.

One thing is using this as a motivational thing, even using the victory as some sort of South American pride but starting throwing insults at players who represent the countries of which some Argentina players earn well their money it's blatant stupid.

It's not that difficult someone from the Argentina FA to tell Martinez shut up and celebrate with your own people instead trying to paint yourself as a brave warrior who is representing South America against all the European bastards, actually a Continent where he is well paid to work and compete.

1 time is funny, 2 times is enough, 3 times is lack of brains and respect for your opponents. What goes around comes around and some Argentina players post match reactions are showing insane levels of arrogance, no matter what they try to explain.

millions of people were there and a hundred of them behave really bad. It’s sad but I guess that can happen in every country.

If you go to St Patrick's Day in Dublin you will 100% see as much ( if not worse) bad behaviour (from my experience of both).

I don't really see how that would change my opinion of him or what he's done since. Fair play but it's quite easy to be compassionate when someone is right in front of you. I'm also not saying Mbappe is a saint. You can celebrate a victory without stooping to this kind of stuff.

That clown shouldn't have been allowed on to the pitch either. Is this what we have to look forward to 'influencers' inserting themselves into sporting triumphs they have nothing to do with?

Anyway enough shouting at clouds for me today.
He didn't insert himself, he paid someone a massive amount of cash to get him on the pitch after the final. You can't just walk around with the players like that unless you've paid to be there. I don't think he realises he's just a meme.

I don't know about that , I would probably say it's more important (and emotionally mature) to show empathy and compassion in the moment than all the stupid stuff players get up to off the pitch.

He's really just playing up to the crowd (the ones who are sore about Mbappes comments around South American football) and using whatever motivates them to get them all whipped up.

He resonates with the people.

He's like Bret Hart pre Montreal screwjob (Good Guy in Canada, Bad Guy in the USA) adored by his compatriots and loathed by other nations.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to call him the second most popular member of the squad behind Messi.

In fact I would go as far as to say that if Messi had Martinez personality to go along with his outrageous talent he would probably be rated closer to Maradona in Argentina.

Most french people have moved on, Martinez can enjoy his title. He's earned it, when someone does something like being a dickhead (racist for example), I don't condemn the entire population group he represents.
It's their moment and at some point down the line, they will be disappointed, it is the nature of the game

It's more important to show one face to someone when they're in front of you and behave like a prick when they're not around? That's not exactly what I'd consider emotionally mature. But feck it anyway I don't really care about Martinez or Argentina or France for that matter.

I fully expect Mbappe to score vs Martinez at some point (If Martinez can get a move to a top club on the back of the world cup especially as they will have more possiblity of facing each other often) and for Mbappe to mock him with one of Martinez stupid dance moves or the golden glove gesture etc

I mean you are recognizing that someone is feeling down and you go out of your way to try and elevate them?

He's literally just won the world cup (playing a starring role) and instead of just absorbing the adulation of his adoring fans he has the piece of mind to actively seek out and comfort the guy who he dueled with all game (the other person comforting Mbappe at that moment was the president of France).

Doesn't it take a certain level of maturity to recognize and act on those emotions in the heat of the moment?

I think Mbappe saw his real face and that what you are seeing with the off pitch theatrics is playing to the Argentine fan base personally.

Some real sore people in here.

Argentina won, they were the better team in the final, yes a big helping hand from certain decisions throughout the tournament, but they were the best side throughout the knockouts.

Some people just need to deal with it.

Don't condone racism in any way but certain fans behaviour don't taint the fact that Argentina won, some people evidently just need to deal with it!

I don't see him mocking him like that unless it's the CL final or something. All he can do is ignore him because it's the best course of action

If you think that Mbappé's volley could really be saved by the GK, I'd suggest you to watch it again, but carry on.
He literally got hands to it and the shot was not in the corner. How you think that shot was unstoppable is utterly baffling.

You're the only one so far, and I don't mean only this forum, who thinks that the GK should've done better. Literally no one ever complained about that.

It was an unexpected low and powerful volley into the opposite corner, and the ball bounced off the ground right before the GK's hand. Unless Martinez, who went down pretty damn fast and had a slight touch on it, was Superman there's no way he could've stopped it.

What's utterly baffling is you, and only you, blaming him for what is simply a superb goal.

While in bad taste, targeting Mbappé is a form of recognition.

He is the crack that almost takes away the trophy from them.
Totally, and I think it’s more on the fans than on Dibu who only held the doll for an instant

This all leads from that idiot Martinez constantly using Mbappe’s face everywhere. He used in the celebrations after the final, fair enough but why be a twat and use it constantly after.
One person probably did that out of 15 million or so in the capital and posted it to social media, that's not typical of Argentinians at all.

It gets shared though and gets viral followings and media will run with "burning effigies" but statistically it's not the case.

People in Argentina I doubt give two fecks about Mbappe or France, they care about winning the WC.

I really hate Salt Bae
