Wait so after the last game you were perfectly happy, but based on last night the entire POV has changed and De Gea is back to his worst?

Seems a perfectly logical take!
Learn to read what was written not what you imagine in your head. I said he had made up for his earlier shitshow against Brentford not that I was perfectly happy. Now that he has fecked up again, he's not having a great season like we thought just slightly above average what he's been serving us the past few years. He's improved a few things but his huge weaknesses remain and we can and should do better.

So one mistake in an fa Cup 3rd round game goes from great to above average season?

I'm delighted he made the mistake.
We got away with it and he is reminded that he is fallible and must double down on concentration and focus.

I'm glad he's our keeper

People, keepers feck up all the time. Have you all seen Allison?

De Gea's had a very decent 4 to 5 months, cut him some slack.

Yes if you grade it at the moment. How many calamity feck ups is a top keeper allowed a season? I'd say two max and he's already at his limit with more than half the season to come. Also any comparison to Allison is silly as feck. Allison is so much better than de gea it's tragic.

He has these howlers in him, couple a season.

De Gea always gives you 7/10 performances and when he drops a clanger it's a spectacular one where you question his ability as a goalie but I'm not concerned.

Where does the idea that he's been good this season come from?
Saves that other keepers also make regularly get overrated.

I guess it’s from people stuck in a time warp that watch the sport, rather than reading spreadsheets.

Some of us are capable of doing both. What has he done that has been so impressive? Which games?

I read what you wrote and imagined nothing, you quite clearly indicated that yesterday's game took him to Brentford levels...which is just a stupid statement.

I think what @Kag means is that De Gea performs well when he has to be called upon often. He will make save upon save in that kind of situation. However, he is prone to mistakes when the opposition chances are few and far between. He's prone to lapses in concentration like that.
I like this summary. Agreed.

Everton's 2nd (disallowed) goal. Malacia is at fault here but no idea why DDG keeps hugging close post like this.

Since he made that howler in the world cup against Cristiano Ronaldo he hasn't been the same player. It's like that tournament broke him.

I think lot's of folks here are being unfair. It was one admittedly very poor error in how many?

He's been brilliant for us this season, he's still a brilliant shot stopper, he comes off his line a lot more, and even his long throws/passes now tend to hit their target more oven than not. He deserves a break

Pretty much every keeper does though. I can think of two Schmeichel made in the treble season, when he was mostly immense.

I don't watch Liverpool so I won't know about Alisson, but Van Der Sar was reliable. We'd have long periods of having the ball, opposition gets a chance and he's there to deal with it.

I think people are harsher towards him when he makes a mistake. Maybe because of his wages. He has been improving in aspects most believed "can't be taught". I'm okay with him being the number 1 GK while we're looking for his replacement.

Van der Sar made massive errors too. All keepers do.

How many points has De Gea cost us this season by conceding goals you expect him to save? And how many points has he saved us by saving when he's expected to concede?

I don't know how one mistake is a ton of game makes him unreliable. Did you watch Bournemouth less than a week ago?

He still made a couple of errors a season. Often being caught flat footed by efforts from distance if memory serves.

All keepers have these flaws. It’s the pros and cons of keepers at big clubs

It's not up to me. If Ten Hag believes he can be a success with De Gea in goal, then I'm backing that decision. If ETH decides he needs to go, then yeah give the manager whatever he needs. We'll probably have an idea of what De Gea's future is this summer.

One thing that would totally piss me off though is if we extend his contract at his current wages. No one is taking De Gea at that kind of money so why should we be mugged off?

That’s ignoring the point we both made. Every goalkeeper, whether that’s Allison, or Van der Sar, or Neuer, or Gianluigi Buffon they will make a few errors a season, and way more often than not they’ll result in a goal.

To single De Gea out for this as was what had been happening is madness

De Gea has been a net negative for United since 2018, his saves aren't cancelling out his mistakes.

I think it's from people who have actually watched him.
I must be rare where I also watch other goalkeepers as well. They make saves too, like Pickfords against Martial last night, some of you would think it was amazing if it was De Gea instead. The numbers which you don't like are just adding those kind of chances up.

Like those saying he’s been bad this season, for instance?
Pull up his stats this season and compare to the top keepers.
https://fbref.com/en/players/7ba6d84e/David-de-Gea

What if anything is exceptional in that?

For what it's worth people saying he's bad this season are wrong as well. I think he's been a bit better than his recent few years, the question is whether that's good enough. I don't think so.

Meh, he's had a good few games (starting with the West Ham game), let's see if he can carry that form into the next games. To have him hit some level of form now could be vital to our season.

Regardless I don't think it's as bad as the stats claim. I would probably guess City and Brentford puts him back -5 or so alone on that xG stuff and it's not like we'd have won those games anyway.

I don't recall VDS making 3 howlers (2 at Brentford, 1 vs Everton) in one season. The only one I can remember is the WBA one at home. And if we're being generous, that own goal Rio Ferdinand scored at Portsmouth when him and VDS had a miscommunication. In my opinion, Van Der Sar was a more reliable and steady goalkeeper than De Gea has ever been for us.

I don't want to take anything away from what he did for us 3-5 seasons ago when he was saving us every week because of how shit we were at defending or controlling games. That's where David De Gea shines, when he's in the thick of the action. But I don't want United's goalkeeper to be in the thick of the action. I want them to be as reliable, or close to anyways, as Edwin Van De Sar. I want goalkeepers who can spend 89 minutes doing nothing, and then being up to the task in the 1 minute that mattered.

A goalkeeper who commands his area would also be nice.

This is what I’ve been waiting for. De Gea is a keeper of chaos. He revels in it. I’ve said all year that as soon as we start to become good then his issues will arise. They stick out under pressure. This is the start.

A new contract will be a monumental error of judgement.

Yeah that's fair when you put it that way. I feel all goalies are due a clusterfeck of a mistake every now and then, especially the top ones; seen a few with Allison this season.

This mistake was embarrassing, but it's not a common one we see from him, being beaten with the ball coming to his feet. He was protecting the post more closely than he usually would against teams, so there may have been something he was instructed to do and it looked very unnatural.

The reality is that rather than being particularly bad or particularly good, his performances probably even out as fairly average this season.

Made some howlers in the Brentford and Everton games particularly, put in perfectly good shot-stopping performances beyond that. Has clearly worked to improve in terms of sweeping and passing, is also still clearly quite mediocre in those regards even with that improvement. And remains among the worst in the league at claiming crosses into his box.

And that's probably what we can expect from him going forward. Performances that average out as somewhere between a minor net negative and a minor net positive. Just with particularly eye-catching highs and lows in the mix.

People are confused becsuse he's been slightly better than the last few seasons and has appeared outside his box a few times.

City's 2nd goal last season at Old Trafford was another one where he was more concerned with the post than the ball.
