To his defense, in the first two clips, Lindelof is marking no one. In the rest, is typical Maguire: he got caught out of position by man marking when we wanted to do zonal defense.

I mean fair fecks, I'd be a complete moron to ignore the fact that Maguire lacks recovery pace. It's possibly also true that Varane would've done better in that scenario; in fact I'd say he most probably would've done. I really don't think the initial decision to close down the attacker (Jaidon Anthony I think it is?) is that egregious though. Nobody else is nearby him and if you give him time on the ball you give him the opportunity to run with the ball and build up speed which isn't ideal either.

I'd say it's fair to argue that Maguire over-commits there but the bigger issue is that McTominay is showing a frankly dumbfounding lack of urgency to get back and offer protection on our right side. Thankfully, Casemiro as usual does his job and drops into the defensive line to offer protection and make the chance more difficult.
You're being a tad harsh on him, probably not much he could've have done from the bench tbf.

Yeah, my bad FFS, just noticed that was Dalot. Apologies to Scotty if he happens to be reading this thread. I've corrected it now.

Nonsense, there is no agenda. People just want to see the team have a competent calm central defence.

Against a better side with competent attackers Maguire's performance would have been punished by one or more goals and that is apart from the poor passing and slowing down our play (something he improved upon in the second half granted).

When Martinez and Varane play there is a sense of calm and control in defence that permeates through the rest of the team and gives the team confidence.

With Maguire in there we look constantly nervous and the on the verge of conceding and that against bang average opposition.

If you have a working set of eyes and watched the entire match and not just the highlights then you cannot justify that performance from Maguire.

He is fine as backup but is in no way good enough for United's first team and that is regardless whether he is an England starter or not. Lindelof was Sweden's defender of the year and is also not good enough.
Are you arguing with yourself?

Yeah, noticed both of these during the game. Even when we keep a clean sheet, he looks quite bad. We need to sell ASAP. His value to the club is much larger as an incoming transfer fee than it will ever be as a player.

A few of those chances came from him running out to engage the man when all he had to do was hold his position. Those are basic errors for a player with his experience.

Yes hes great at pointing..
The difference with Varane and Shaw last night was immense, they played a high line almost as midfield play makers. Maguire wants to sit deeper and pass the ball sideways ten times before the defence gets it forward.
He needs selling and a back up for Varane brought in.

He's now 1/5 odds to join Aston Villa and he was spotted with his agent near their training ground.

I thought he was ok but it's laughable to ever imagine him being a starter for any team with title hopes.

What a joker. At this point it must be in his head, as he's a different player for England. Can't help but feel a bit sorry for him, but for both parties he needs a fresh start at a different club.

I am both angry at him and feel sorry for him. I really don`t want to dislike any of our players but he is making it hard not to.
Yes we now he is comfortable playing that long cross to the LW when under no pressure at all, but that feels like the only strength he has right now. Moves around like a retired player coming back for some charity game.

Thought he was ok today, didn‘t do too much wrong, spread the play well, didn’t seem as ponderous on the ball either.

When he isnt pressed he did some nice passing to the left wing. Also a bad pass inbetween Garnacho and Malacia, that wasnt very good but most of his forward passing was good.

His defending could be better, stepped in and got nutmegged or passed by fairly easy a few times. He really shouldnt be doing any of that stepping in defending because he misses it quite often and since he lacks any form of pace he is totally out of the game after the opponent goes past him. A better opponent might punish mistakes like that. He is the fourth option centre back after Varane, Martinez and Lindelof so cant really expect a perfect performance i suppose...

In and around our own 18 yard box, he was good and cleared a lot. Outside of it, passing wise he was good, defensively though he was a bit all over the place.

He did well with the ball in the first half. But that thing where he rushes out and doesn't get the ball and leaves a gap behind him as he can't track back happens way too much

Charlton are probably his level. He just looks shot
Aye I'm sure a league one team is the level of a CB who has just had a fairly successful World Cup and featured in a lot of publications team of the tournament..

Maguire hasn't worked out for us and a move would probably be best for both parties considering how toxic the opinion on maguire has become, but the way people suggest he has no ability is laughable.

Think he'd thrive at spurs under conte. They play 3 cbs and defend with a deep line, all of which are styles we've seen maguire do well under.

No I agree he is getting slammed for everything but he just looks horrified whenever he plays for us.

He was so bad tonight, one of his worst efforts to date. There’s no point prolonging the agony, can we just move him on

He must get a bonus every time he boots the ball out of play under no pressure. He may still have the title but he's no longer United captain and it shows.

86% passing today including 8 long balls but I know for a fact that when he messed that pass up in the second half between Malacia and Garancho that there were probably a few thousand United supporters screaming at their TV's, only to be quiet 5 seconds later when Martinez dribbled it out of bounds under no pressure

His patented long balls to the left winger were excellent when Charlton decided to compress their team to the centre and leave the flanks wide open. Defensively he did his job except for one or two occasions.

Best diagonals game of his United career.

Tried to create openings for Charlton by flying into spaces he didn't need to and not having the quickness for it like Malacia and Lisandro did. That's probably not going to change at his job.

this very accurate. He made 4-5 Hollywood passes towards Garnacho and in most parts was solid. Apart from a few moments when he wanted to be proactive and win the ball quickly.

He did very well for the most part, let's be honest.

Had that odd moment where he tried to bulldoze his way into the box but got dispossessed, nutmegged, and earned a yellow for his troubles; apart from that, and the other time one of the Charlton forwards got passed him, it was a really decent performance.
