We got scammed for this dude. He's a neat tidy player who can press, but he's not going to go on any dazzling runs, he's not going to dominate the midfield he's not going to provide more creativity in the final third than what Bruno provides.

He's an upgraded Jessie Lingard, A player who will go missing for large parts of the game then may be pop up with a basic assist or finish. This will be Ten Hag's Harry Maguire signing and in a years time we'll be asking ourselves what the hell was he thinking splashing out 60 million on this guy.
If we end up paying 60 m for Mount then nobody unless they are absolute morons and missing majority of their brain cells would Question his signing , because add ons of 5 m which would take his over all transfer fee to 60 m would only be activated if United end up winning multiple trophies and Mount playing majority of the games during that time atleast based on most of the reports on which you are basing his transfer fee on.

Find us a midfielder who can press is tactically astute, can dictate play and go on dazzling runs?

Bellingham moved to Madrid, De Jong said no and iniesta is retired last time I checked.
Both Arda Guler and Szobozial were available this summer or we could and used that money to put towards buying a world-class combative midfielder to cover for Casimero. Someone who actually who brings something to the team instead of bringing in a body. Whenever we buy these kind of players where it's obvious we made a mistake, fans act like there were no other alternatives. Don't act like Mount was the only player in the world, if during last season anyone told us we were going to go after mount, you'd no doubt laugh, be confused or baffled or all of the above

Fascinating to see how he's being praised for workrate and running while we boot Fred.

TBH based on my (limited) knowledge of what kind of player Mount is, comparisons to Park Ji Sung are not that far off. I think he's a good tactical player that will always prove useful and fits many scenarios. It's a matter of expectations, if people expect him to take the game by the scruff of the neck then it's their problem, he was never that type.

Tbf, they cost a similar amount (Fred probably much more if you account for the time value of money) and one has had (is it 4 now?) over 4 years here to prove himself and the others barely had 4 preseason matches - and possible only 1 outing with the so-called first XI...if Mount turns out to be as good as JSP then we'll have an excellent player on our hands.

Overall, you might be onto something (scruff of the neck stuff), although i am expecting more from Mount once he/the team settles.

People desperate to say I told you so should know that you get feck all for being right on an internet forum. Maybe wait and see how he does over the course of a season and not a handful of games?

Was worse than in the first two games.

To the "he worked hard" people. My god. We paid 60m for him hard work shouldn't be his main quality. And please keep your 'but in the right system' replies to yourselves. We've finally got Fred out of the team, I didn't expect another rubbish player who people pretend is good so soon.

To the 'he needs time' people. He's played 3 games and barely had a touch of the ball, why do you need time to be involved in the game? If you don't want to have an opinion on him that's your business but its fair for the rest of us judge what we've seen.

Lastly, the reason Mount is a concerned over others is that we just paid 60 for him

Personally, I am not sure why we got him as our 1st buy/priority.

But I assume ETH sees it differently -- Mount is a coach's player. I don't think fans will appreciate what Mason brings to the table. He is what I think we call the 'glue guy'. He makes the system work.
How does a football system work when you lose 2:0 and feck all chances created?

I fully agree with your post. I just find it funny that for Fred the "only works hard and runs a lot" is a stick to beat him with, while "at least he works hard and runs a lot" is used to defend Mount. Not that he needs anyone to defend him, he's been OK and basically brings to the table what was expected based on his Chelsea days. I do have a concern that we bought Mount to mould him into a different kind of player that he is, what I always found a wrong approach but time will tell if that worry is justified.

I do expect more from Mount because obviously we might have as well played Fred in those few pre-season games with the same effect, but like I said early on - Mount should be judged after first games against serious opposition away, as it's clear what problem we're trying to solve with this move.

I understand that, but he says that Mount makes the system work, which up till now bares zero truth. Yes I think he will improve the team with given time.
I think he does because his pressing is so good. Rashford fecked it for us in the pressing standpoint because he wasn't baring down on the CBS enough, it's not really his game which is fine. But I can see us pressing really really well when Mount, Bruno and Hojlund are all at it off the ball.

I think in the post match Ten Hag mentioned too that the lack of a striker messed up the pressing off the ball.

Yeah, preseason means very little. It'll all boil down to how we perform when the season kicks off.

I don't think pressing is our biggest problem, control of the ball and creating chances on the other side is. Hojlund will help improve both those things, but our midfield has to do its share, and Mount too.

Mount was not at fault for poor ball retention. Casemiro was having much more of a stinker on the ball and Eriksen looked like he was drunk, whilst Bruno was on the wing out of position.

Its probably harsh Mount is singled out even when considering controlling the ball. In my opinion Ten Hag got it wrong with the Eriksen sub. He should have put a winger on and put Bruno back in the middle. That would have helped our control tons more, and enabled both Bruno and Mount to create.

Feck-all chances created? Did you even watch the match? We were poor in terms of passing & moving but we had our chances.
Shots from 30m out are not chances created, one lucky mess up which Mount missed and McT's run are the best we created if I remember correctly. I don't think that's good enough.

Yeap. Should have brought on Antony earlier. Would have helped out poor AWB a lot more.

Absolutely crazy in here already mate.
Unreal mate. Admittedly I've not watched anything from this morning yet but I thought he has been good from what I've seen in other games so far. Not even played an actual competitive game yet, like chill troops

People are idiots. Same people when he settles in “delighted we signed him, it’s what we needed”

caf idiots unite!
Accurate :D

This place is bizarre on times. Decisions have been made.
Yup, like it's been decided he's not very good and come Hell or high water that's what he is. As I said, patience! Maybe, new players need time and training to settle?

I am not saying he was at fault, and I am not blaming him for the loss, just zero evidence that he is the "glue guy" or that he makes the system work or that he will in the future. Even @sglowrider says he is not sure why he was our first priority buy I think the same. I personally think that he might end up creating more problems in our midfield than solving existing problems, simply due to the same reasons why it did not work against Real and that is, I am not sure that a midfield of Casemiro, Mount and Bruno will work, especially against big teams.

The way I see it, our wings were poor.

Ganarcho was a one-trick pony, doing exactly the same predictable thing that we accuse Antony of. The difference is that Antony tracks back and helps out his RB. Ganarcho leaves us vulnerable on their right wing. That's why I don't see him as a starter and at some point, ETH will be really pissed off at him. But he's young and hopefully, he will learn. But individually he did ok but predictable.

AWB was trying to cover the entire right flank all by himself because Bruno has a tendency to cut inside a lot and leave the left vulnerable to attack.

We lacked the energy to cope with RM's midfielders who are all very young but talented. The next-gen of Modric-Kroos-Casemiro has been sorted out for the next 10 years. Perez has learnt a lot since coming back this time around in terms of squad building.

You seem not to have a clue about Park if you think he just ran around.

I dont know if you write this kind of posts on purpose just to wum or these are your genuine takes.
Yeah and do you think Mason Mount is just going to run about?

Mount is an energy player with the ability to not just be creative, take various positions but also score goals and tackle whilst he is literally on other players arses all game.

People are tired of him already because he isn’t playing like last seasons Eriksen because some people can only value how players on the ball play like deep lying playmakers. Especially when half’s the fanbase believe possesion football can only be played in Pep Guardiola’s slow motion way.

That’s why people just on this page has called out Mount a ‘managers player’ rather than a fan bases one.

He isn’t a ‘glue guy or system guy’ that is the beat, or soul of the team - he is the Pumps guy, the engine guy that makes the team harder to beat.

If we wanted to win the game then yes, but I like to think we're focusing more on fitness level and it kind of makes sense to keep Eriksen in that context I think. Harsh to criticize Ten Hag in preseason.

I'm lost now. What's your opinion on him then?
Or you're just saying what other fans think or dont think.
From your post it seemed you regard Park as someone who just ran about and thats why Mount is a similar player..
Wheover is tired of Mount already for whatever reason is simply mental. No other word for it really.

Never liked him, never wanted him signed, to make it worst we handed him the number 7 shirt, which really twisted my Nickers, But be it as it may it's what ETH want so I'll have to see how he does through out the coming season to understand how he fits with us.

No that Park Ji Sung/Mount needs to be the energy of the team- rather than the systems guy that is built around.

Our systems guy today was Mainoo. The system broke early so our engine became less vital.

Players like Park Ji Sung & Mount will look less important in a team with less of their systematic players.

Players like Mount or JSP make a system stronger but don’t create the system it self.

If you're expecting that from him, you're always going to be disappointed.
The majority on here never saw the fuss about him when he played for Chelsea. People are just being consistent for once.
Yeah I don't know what I'm supposed to be expecting from him then. If it's just a pressing machine and energy monster then don't we have Fred / McT for that? I'm happy for someone to enlighten me and calibrate my expectations of a 55M midfielder who was in the last year of his contract.

I thought what we needed was a de Jong type midfielder? Otherwise someone who can contribute with goals and assists (ala Lampard)?

McT and Fred are energy monster but techically very poor, especially McTominay who's positionally poor too.
Also he does goals and assists too.

Depends who you ask on that. I would prefer someone of De Jong's profile over Casemiro as the deepest midfield in build-up phases, but De Jong is unattainable.

And Bruno's production rates are pretty similar to Lampard's.

I would say to expect a grafter of a player who's capable of linking up extremely well in the half-spaces with our attackers and someone who can be productive as well. Whether you think that's worth 55m in the final year of his contract is open to interpretation.

It's pre season and he is doing fine!

RM packed the midfield last night and on the eye test they clearly won that battle, but actual chances created were pretty even in the first half.

Plus Mount could of scored in both games against Arsenal and Real...he is still finding his way and it was a great test last night.
