..….Rashford has, however 31 goalsfor United last season, and three of the last seasons above 20 goals total. That is a lot more than respectable for a wide forward, be honest……
Which is a fantastic contribution, but in the context of individual competitions, it serves no purpose to conflate all the goals scored in those in other competitions.
For example, with specific regard to the Premier league, it doesn’t matter how many goals anyone scored in the Europa league or the Rumbelows/ Milk cup (or whatever it’s called this week). None of those goals count in the league. Stating the bleedin’ obvious really.

I think he’s capable of breaking the 20 league goals mark, but he’d have to go on an extended run of being on fire, like post World Cup last season, but Marcus has never had season long, consistent scoring in the PL.
It’s always come in bursts of a couple of months, with the odd extra goals scattered throughout the rest of the season.
So it would be exceptional for him to break that 20 league goal mark.

Remember his career PL average is 9.5 goals.
If you just take the last 4 seasons, that goes up to 12.25 goals
In that context, 17 goals was very good.…

If the point is to have a ballpark idea of how many goal contributions to expect from Rashford this season, I would think goals scored in all competitions in recent seasons is more relevant than league goals scored when he was 18, 19 and 20. Last season he scored almost 50% more in total than his previous best season, while in the league he scored the same as his previous high in the league. It’s more likely that he has improved as a goal scorer in general than that he has suddenly become a specialist in cup competitions in various countries. It’s mostly coincidence wether a player scores against Barca in the EL, Wolves in the league or Wolves in the cup, and if you look at Rashfords carreer, you’ll find no consistent evidence that he is some sort of a specialist in any particular tournament, so excluding cup games is just a haphazard division that takes total n down and weakens the statistical strength of prediction. Whereas his mean PL includes playing as an all out back up winger Under Jose Mourinho as a 19 -21 year old, talk about little relevance to the question at hand.

I think if you look at recent seasons when he has not been injured much, it’s reasonable to expect between 25 and 30 goals across 50 games this season if he continues to have the same role in a Ten Hag system, maybe more.

Why look at career averages? How good were you at math at age 3? What about age 4? What about age 5? What about your lifetime average? Should we expect you to regress to your math ability at age 4 next year?

Funny that we saw this twice last game.
Funny that people don't know what context is or what pep is talking about in that clip.

Hint: nothing to do with what happened vs Dortmund.

I have an agenda against Rashford. For me it's looking like a mistake to give him a 5 year deal. He is very talented and has all the skills to become a great player but he will end up being just another one who played for United.

His finishing is very iffy, lacks finesse in his game. Doesn't seem to be in control of the ball, or body when he is dribbling. Feel like he was actually better at this in his early years.

He is unable to play well if there's no space to run, he is not a CF for sure.

Garnacho might end up getting more game time on the left, so he may be shunted to the right which again is not his best position.

Really am hoping he turns up with a 30 goal season in the league as we are counting on him a lot. But I do not see it in him.

He is good at a lot of things without being consistent at any of them.

Hasn't had a good preseason at all which is again very worrying.

We will have Spurs, Arsenal very early in the season and him playing like he is right now doesn't bode well.
If the Saudi’s come in with a £100m bid, I think Utd should grab it with both hands.
The absolute state of posters here.

But then again this 85% of the morons here wanted him out before last season, so expected.

He said "they don't keep it", not can't.

Another moronic take, and it's still preseason. This season is going to be a nightmare in here with all the moaners.

The context applies, Rashford cant deal with high balls. Any aerial ball that requires challenging, he is not involved.

How is it a moronic take from the manager of the team winning 5 titles in 6 years.

So many of you want to come to this forum and just read about how great our players are and not see any negative comments.

Seems it's only fair if we're making judgements on the basis of two touches in a pre-season friendly match.

Yes, that's why we are fans and keyboard warriors and not managers. All Fans are entitled to useless opinions as they don't matter

Just watched the Dortmund game back and Rashford looked electric when he came on. Looks like another big season ahead of him numbers wise. Intrigued to see how he dovetails with Hojlund.

It's a hot take from you not understanding what he says. You're trying to make it that he thinks Rashford cannot keep the ball in general, what he says is that United doesn't keep the ball after De Gea's long balls.

This isn't a comment about Rashford's first touch, but just he's not a target man like Lukaku and DDG's passing isn't as good as Onana's.

The guy who tweets it is daft and so are you for sharing it here with the wrong context.

Edit: just looked at this guy's posts and he just hates Rashford for some reason. Obviously pays for that blue tick as well as he's a nobody.

I didnt say anything about Rashford first touch either. Pep mentioned Lautaro and Dzeko not Lukaku.

Anyways I hope Rashford has a great season.

The moaning started already I see. Even earlier then I expected.

Will be another season where this thread will be relatively quite after Rashford's good performances in comparison to when he has a not so good game. All the idiots will come out and slate him at every opportunity.

Rashford being poor with his back to goal is not some rocket science, it's a known thing and good that he isn't a CF. So it doesn't matter. Pep is talking about Onana to CF who holds the ball to bring others into play. Nothing to do with what happened vs Dortmund.

I said few times, for few posters on this forum, Twitter is the knowledge source. Arguments and judgement on players are based on Twitter shit and banter accounts.

To be fair the whole game has changed in the last 10 years where the need to play with your back to the goal has become less and less useful.
Teams have been trying to play progressive football where quick short passes, and runs behind the defense were the norm.

This is also part of the explanation as to why there is a global shortage of pure number 9s in Europe but a flurry of wide attackers.

So even if it’s a shortcoming in Rashford’s overall game, he’s not the only one and he barely had to use it or work on it because the game didn’t require it

Apart from all this, he is our first choice LW. Weird to hold "can't play with back to goal" against him.

If he is struggling to score goals, assist goals, or make impact in the game then all the criticism makes sense. Him not able to compete for long ball and hold the ball should be among the least priority thing for him.

No wonder this place is the way it is if this is the type of people, people follow. His whole account is basically shite posting United and he's even paying for the tick to feel that little bit more important.

I think with Rashford we know he just is what he is by now. If you play to his style he is an incredibly effective player he's proved this now for many years.

I just don't think his optimal style of play is suitable for teams intending to move to a possession style. I feel him and Bruno together will almost ensure that we are at our best attacking in transition as that's the style that suits them the most and they are our best attackers.

There's obviously ways of merging both styles to incorporate possession football with effective transition play but our other attackers are extremely average excluding Højlund who we haven't seen yet.

Rashford is a really good player but I just feel we need a player to clearly take over from him as our most important attacker and to be the person we play through. There will always be a limit to how good we are as long as he's our best forward. He's more Son than Kane is what I'm getting at basically.

The more you see of these types of negative posts the more you realise how few people actually regularly watch the players they slate.

Don't or can't, the word used doesn't really matter. The outcome is the same.

The forwards have to look after the ball better and that goes for Rashford in particular.

Even though he is not great now, I see why Martial is still at United. Rashford can not play the striker role to save his life.

Yup. For all his faults, I'd easily pick Martial at CF over Rashford.

We needed 2 strikers this summer. I'm still hoping Hojlund is the backup...

I'm probably one of the few who likes him as a striker though that only started this year.

The only problem is I don't think he likes playing there much. A lot of the time he needs a goal to switch on his game as a striker but he does a lot of good work once he does.

I with you. The brief time when Mbappe rumors were floating I was saying Rashford could easily play striker in that situation. He’s improved tons from his younger years up top with the little things (layoffs, holding up, going to his weaker side) to where he’s more than just a channel running merchant. It’s not his ideal position (yet, I could see him transitioning though if he continues to improve ) but it’s not a BAD option

Made countless runs in behind during the first half and was hardly found, if at all. That being said, I felt his link play was very good today, which is something he doesn't always get praised for. Played some great first time passes to oncoming runners, one of which resulted in the third goal. Obviously got his goal, too, following a great pick out from Antony.

Overall, a good game for Rashford!

Sorry to disappoint, but there's no way we'll be signing a player worth 60M as back up. Will he play every game? Probably not, but you'd expect he'll play the majority.

If we decide to keep Martial, then I'd imagine he'll be back up, If not, then we'll see Rashford as the back up, meaning Garnacho can get a lot of minutes, too.
