Ten Hag seemed like the only person in the world who thought this was a good signing at the time.

Chelsea supporting mates couldn't believe their luck when we paid that for him, saying he's a talented player but inconsistent with both form and fitness.

To be fair he's been quite consistent this season with being unavailable.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

His fitness was hardly inconsistent at Chelsea. He barely missed any games in his Chelsea career until the final three months when he got an injury that required surgery.

Once you get a bad injury it can make you become injury prone. We never learn when buying players who have injury records.

Injuries can happen.
But spending that much on a player with a year left just didn't make sense at all.

This wasn't a rvp type situation. His use when he was fit was baffling to say the least. We got him but there didn't seem to be a plan and still doesn't.

His injury compounds the situation though

The fact that we could start negotiating with him now for a free transfer just makes this transfer look worse. Plus, I don't see how he makes the first 11 because when he was fit he was awful for us.

We needed a CDM/CM, he wasn't that and bar the usual "ETH knows best" everyone pointed out to that little detail.

Yes. But considering how we make use of one of the three midfielders (inc Bruno) I actually think Mount is very well suited for that job. We play with one DM (usually Casemiro when fit) and one really attacking 8 (almost a 10). Lately that has been Mainoo, but also quite often McTominay.

One could of course be critical of that setup. But with Shaw and Martinez at the back, it looked quite promising. I also think it is not that different to Arsenal when they Havertz in midfield.

Did it now?
We didn't see that a lot but I always thought this is minor improvement compared to when we have to play second choice players, and the reason I am strongly in ETH out camp - I just don't believe in his ideas.
Did we have a good game in this setup, that would make you a believer?

So where is he now? I genuinely thought it was money well spent even though he only has a year left on his contract as he can give us another dimension or two on the pitch with his qualities. On hindsight now, it’s absolutely appalling

Can't we all agree we need to give him a chance? Difficult to play football when you're injured you know.

We probably shouldn’t have got him when he only had a year left on his contract, and we shouldn’t have paid what we did. I don’t think the injury situation was foreseeable though after looking at his injury record at Chelsea.
I think if we can get him to full fitness he’ll be an asset to the squad, he’s a good footballer and to me he’s more committed than most of our squad when it comes to pressing and covering the distance required to control matches.

We can definitely give him a chance before calling him a flop... while also universally agreeing this was a really dumb transfer.

We make no use of our midfield at all. We are very often overrun and leaking chances, we also have zero control of the game, that has been happening with Mainoo in the team also. One of the reasons is that Casemiro isn't the player that he once was, and even in his prime I am not sure he would have managed to cover the Bruno and potentially Mount being the other CM/CAM. Rice on the other hand seems capable to cover for that Arsenal set up, we don't have that player, and we never had him even last year, which makes the Mount transfer absolute stupidity.

It will be great to see him on the pitch once he has overcome his injury....it will be like a new signing!

If he regains his fitness and has a run of games, I am still hopeful he can be of use for us. Mount will never have the star quality that Bruno once had, but his floor is higher and he would add some balance I think.

We could really really really do with this guy coming back and being up for it. We need some energy and spirit in this team and when he’s fit and on form he has it. Issue is when will he be fit and when will he find form. Damn.

I agree. It was a baffling transfer in a sense that we paid 50m for him in his last year. The fee was just mental.

Most stupid transfer of them all for me, and that's saying something.

This is not against Mount himself, the player. The actual transfer in itself.
Fully agree. Most transfers you can kind of see the thinking behind the decision of making the player a target, even if the transfer fee in the end got a lot higher than expected. Here i am lost. Just lost. What were they thinking. On top of it all, he was the first signing of the summer. It was super important to get him in soonest possible. Could not wait. Just could not. So important. To make him feel even more loved and valued they give him the iconic nr7 right off the bat. Our big marquee signing. Boom!
Preagreement of sorts for a free transfer this summer instead? Could make decent sense.
Mason Mount is a decent player, and seems like a decent guy, could absolutely make sense on a free. But nah, we desperately needed him asap.

Maguire for 80m and Antony for +80m makes my head spin as well as far as transfers go, but, this Mount deal probably takes the cake.

They should be investigated for it honestly. Wouldn't be suprised if people that shouldn't got a cut and that's why these prices are so crazy.

It's very common across football, definitely. We've done a lot of dealings with SEG agency/Kees Vos - ten Hag's buddy and an agency which his son works for...

Whenever he's back, give him the rest of the season in Bruno's place. Be interesting to see what we can do with someone a bit more sensible and less scatter-brained in there. We have nothing to lose anyway.

I shouted from the rooftops in the transfer thread that it didn’t make much sense and was just told to “trust ETH”. Mount had never been successful as an 8 in a 3 man midfield, and we were paying 60m and prioritizing him over Kim (who’s borderline world class and was cheaper) when he was leaving on a free in a year anyways.

At this point I’m happy he’s close to returning though because I’d love to see him in Bruno’s spot.

Interested to see where he plays when he's back. I'd like to see him instead of Bruno alongside Mainoo and Casemiro for a bit, just to get some press resistance in there. Also to see if there's any future in him, as he's not getting in ahead of Mainoo and isn't a deep player. So give him the chance as a 10 to see if he can be the guy post Bruno.

Just to manage your expectations, but unless Bruno gets injured, this is never, ever, ever, happening.

I was excited until 'next couple of weeks'. That could mean April with our luck. Anyway, I'd like him to get a run of games. He wasn't exactly amazing when he played but not poor either. Very good in some games.
He'll get two 25 min appearances then get injured again.

We should call this team Injury United

I hope he comes back and puts in a few good performances as he he has probably been our biggest ever waste of money so far since he cost £55m but has made only 12 appearances and would have been available for free in few months time.

We desperately needed an 8 or another 6 and we signed him, whilst liverpool got macallister. That says a lot about the two clubs
