Diamond or we keep the 4231 with Mata on the right.
I like him as an option, but Mata seems an odd choice against these. They'll be pressing hard/energetic, and we'll be looking to hit them on the break. I think the diamond with both Greenwood/Rashford up top is the most obvious choice.

Can see it now, Ighalo coming from nowhere to getting 96th minute 2-2 equaliser to get you through.

Can see you leaving Greenwood out just to give you some decent option off the bench incase Rashford shoulder goes after 20 minutes in one of the duels.

I can't stand the diamond... We've mostly looked shit when using it. True the one time we didn't was the second half vs. Leipzig... But that was just as much down to them becoming a disorganised ramble of shite and Rashford turning on God mode.

Hope it's a 3-5-2...or just the same XI that finished the game vs. West Ham.

Without Cavani and Martial I'm not so sure a two striker system will work. We would need one of the strikers to drop deep, hold the ball when pressed and link up play. Neither Rashford and Greenwood are good at this.

    I'd go with this.

    DDG
    Awb Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Scott Matic
    Mata. Bruno. Rashford
    Greenwood

Most logical thing is to start Mata as he does have a magic touch or two in him every game and then for the last half an hour you put James in the game to inject some pace against tired and leggy defenders.
Rashford and Greenwood play all game.
The silver lining here is that Greenwood is our best number 9 and I always think he has a goal in him. He will start there and it just might be exactly what we need.

Mata can't play with Angelino playing for them. He will leave him for dead. He's not up to the pace of these huge games anymore.

For me a diamond is the best way to beat their press. They also like to use the touchline as an extra man when pressing, so we are best not trying to play smart football around that area. If we congest the middle and play Rashford/Greenwood through with smart balls we'll be OK. It's easier to control the game with that midfield selection, I think VDB is a safer box to box bet right now but if it's not working Pogba can come on.

If Shaw is fit, I believe we will definitely go with three at the back.

Rashford against Angelino will be a walk in the park, we need to stick him on the right. Remember how Dan James blitzed him away to City?

James and Rashford has to start along with Greenwood.

The tactic is clear- you misplace one pass and you will be put into sword.

Seriously wouldn’t mind this. Most likely switching rash and POG though.

With Cavani and Martial out and so many defenders available (for once!!!) we will probably go with 5 at the back.

3-4-1-2 looks good here. We seem to employ it in big games to support the counter and Leipzig have to come at us which could be to our advantage. With 3 at the back Telles can not worry too much about defensive responsibilities and look to give us width and AWB is definitely improving as an attacking option on the right. Have to use Pogba in this game too, he has the quality to find the long range pass to catch Leipzig out of postion.

    DDG
    Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    AWB Matic Pogba Telles
    Fernandes
    Greenwood Rashford

Hugely important game that will likely shape Uniteds season.

Make no mistake this is very tough game against a side that has won every one of their home league and CL games this season and only conceding 4 goals in all home matches. In their home games they generally have 60% possession and only give the opposition on average 2 shots on target in the Red bull arena so United will need to clinical when the chances comes.

A big blow not have the options of Cavani, Martial if Greenwood, Rashford don't fire or marked out of the game the only other striker option is ighalo whom looks a mile of the pace.

A back 5 is a possibility now with Tuanzebe and Shaw back in the squad. This is arguably the toughest group United could have got in this seasons CL, before a ball was kicked many punters and pundits expected United to finish 3rd at best so it will be great to prove them all wrong by grabbing at least a draw tomorrow night.

What your trying to say is that this is Ole's first real test then?

I guess Pogba is not playing, unless he makes a public apology or comment, which he has never done for United (but has for France)? Because with what Raiola said, there is no way United and Ole accepts that he plays...

I see this being an easier game than most. We will press and attack fast and direct. Upamecano is apparently out too which is a nice bonus. Diamond with Bruno, Greenwood and Rashford causing devastation.

    0-3 United, Rash 2, Greenwood 1

Why have we stopped having those press conference threads?

@Sultan didn't you manage them ever so well?
    Hello

    Hope you're well.

Over the last few seasons, @Samid started these threads. I would hope another poster can takeover starting the thread if Samid is no longer creating them.

I'm still in some shock that after those two fantastic performances from us at the start here we are potentially on the verge of being spat out to the Europa League once again,

i can't think of ever seeing a team that's so bipolar such as ours, we could honestly smash them 5-0 again tomorrow if we wanted to or be smashed 5-0 if we can't be arsed.

I think we'll knick it just :nervous:

Agreed. He either apologises / distances himself away from it or he stays out of the matchday squad / flies back early. Ole / Ed have to take a stand here. These jokers cannot be allowed to tarnish the name of our club and disrupt game preparations like this without there being consequences.

Coman is very injury prone. That's why. It's prevented him from fulfilling his potential.

He's still very good player, mind. Scored in The CL final.

Martial FC wanted him dropped for France so that Martial could get more caps.
If he plays like he did in that video, regularly, there is no way that Martial should displace Coman.
Martial FC over-rate him greatly. Some even believed that he would with Ball on Dor. IMO, if he were playing for us in 1999, he wouldn't even make the bench and would be playing in the Reserves. A decent player, but nothing special and can definitely be replaced easily.

Woodward will always back the player.
The player is an asset and can be bought/sold.
If Ole were to tell Woodward that Pogba is a virus, Ole would be one step closer to the exit door.

While I know "Ole's first real test" is a running joke on here this game tomorrow is Uniteds most important since Leicester away last season and hopefully a repeat result although I'll be delighted with a draw.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't. Ole usually doesn't start players getting too much media attention
In the current situation we are in, we need Pogba offensive capabilities. So he might play. But not clarifying the situation cannot help the mood in the dressing room.

    Pogba will play tomorrow. Guaranteed.
He dropped Fred after the red card, it's not like Ole has been playing him regularly anyway, he's got to assert his authority and I don't think Pogba has been playing well enough that dropping him would prevent us beating Leipzig.

    I dont think he will.
It's too late to design a game plan without him, when we need him. 5 subs and all, we need to qualify for the CL 2nd tour, it's about creating consistency for the club. I think we will need to involve him.

The City game might just have turn another turn though. Not that I expected him to start it, I think this is a Bruno/Fred/Scott type of midfield combination but still.

Fair points , I don't think he will start, but will be a sub

Personally my tactic wouldn’t start with Pogba, as I’d park the bus with 3 centre backs, with Matic and McT in front for first 65 mins, hoping to hit super quick counters from which we should score.
If we need to force the game, we can open up for final 25 mins and bring on Pogba, Mata and James

He didn't drop Fred. He's resting him because he's going to be starting throughout the month.
