He said 'likely' There's no need to catastrophise. How many athletes of the many that have had it are still struggling with it?
I have no idea. I haven’t been following their careers closely. I just happened to read an interview with the tennis player and thought it was interesting. The virus can affect your heart, lungs and neurological system. Even if someone like you or I feel completely normal (eventually) after a dose, the tiniest degree of impairment on any of these systems could make an important difference to an elite athlete.

Can you maybe name an athlete who’s had it and has been back to playing at his very best?

It's going to be a tough start for next season

Me and him don’t really see eye to eye. But hope he makes a full recovery.
post makes it sound like you guys engage in arguments regularly

The virus will certainly be around for years, but it's crazy how far the media are driving its potency. Apparently if you're American and under 35, you have more of a chance of being hit by lightning than dying of COVID-19. By all means wear a mask, social distance and isolate if you have symptoms, but don't follow the hysteria in the media, you'll be driven insane.

Crazy how the virus doesn't spread during riots...
Who says it doesn't spread during riots?

Dybala was in great form straight after the restart

Mendy at City was actually getting some plaudits for a change after the restart

Another poster mentioned some basketball players that were in great form after having it

The most anyone ever self isolates for is 2 weeks.

Fingers crossed he isn't one of the people who have a bad reaction or lasting effect from this.

Maybe he might even be back ready for Sep 19th all being well.
I’m almost certain Dybala had it for about 1 month, although again I could be wrong and it was just recurring.

Either way, yeah, hope he’s back for his own sake and good health, and because we really need him as Fred-Matic or Matic-Scott ain’t breaking through Palace.

Pretty sure he was getting some false positive test results? As he tested twice didn't he?

I think I'm less worried about Palace at home, and much more worried that we all know we need big gamechanging signings to even dream about catching the top 2. Yet don't seem to be making any progress.

And yes I know it's 20 days or so until the first game blah blah :)

Maguire carry on in Greece, Wan Bissaka choosing the wrong place to go on holidays , the injuries to Williams, Shaw and now Pogba tests positive for Covid-19 how much more disruption to a new season does United need or will continue to get?

Best wishes to Paul on a full recovery.

This is what can happen when you go on vacation in pandemic times. Sure, you can get it everywhere. But why risking geting it? Why is it so important to travel?

There is no thinking about consequence.

Dybala beat Ronaldo to win the Juventus player of the season award but didn’t start either of their last two league matches, or their last CL game. So not sure how you’d call that back to his very best?

That's not true. If you continue to have symptoms, you have to keep isolating

If you have symptoms or tested positive
Self-isolate for at least 10 days
You should self-isolate for at least 10 days if:

you have symptoms of coronavirus and you tested positive, had an unclear result or did not have a test
you tested positive but have not had symptoms
If you have symptoms, the 10 days starts from when they started.

If you have not had symptoms, the 10 days starts from when you had the test. But if you get symptoms after your test, self-isolate for a further 10 days from when your symptoms start.

Stop self-isolating after 10 days if you feel OK
You can stop self-isolating after 10 days if either:

you do not have any symptoms
you just have a cough or changes to your sense of smell or taste – these can last for weeks after the infection has gone
Keep self-isolating if you feel unwell
Keep self-isolating if you have any of these symptoms after 10 days:

a high temperature or feeling hot and shivery
a runny nose or sneezing
feeling or being sick
diarrhoea
Only stop self-isolating when these symptoms have gone.

If you have diarrhoea or you’re being sick, stay at home until 48 hours after they've stopped.

Deary me Pogue. Look at his form and minutes over the season.

https://www.whoscored.com/Players/114863/Fixtures/Paulo-Dybala

Goals and assists wise he had his best little run after the restart. He's not a 90 minutes player and as you can see it is not uncommon for him come off the bench. There's nothing to suggest that his performances were affected looking at his basic form.

Didn't Pogba stay in England the entire vacation? Sure he was in London for a quiet dinner with friends and his pregnant wife, but that was the extent of it?

Kind of a side issue but there’s been an interesting thing going on in climbing where elite climbers are absolutely smashing PB’s after lockdown because they were forced to stop competing and had time to rest and do some very specific training regimes they wouldn’t usually have time to do.

Obviously, actually catching the virus wouldn’t be the best strategy here!

Dude can't catch a break from the news can he? Anyway, he should be fine like all the other sportsmen and women that have tested positive. Wishing him a quick recovery...

No offence but what's the big news here? People are getting infected everyday everywhere. This despite precautions. He has gotten ill and will recover like most people do.

Well, even if you don't care about his health and well-being, the big news here is that he'l miss preseason and most likely our season opener.

Yeah I can well imagine that, some of my best running has happened after forced rest so I can see why some elites could absolutely do with a rest more than anything else in the World.

I hope he can go through this without showing any symptoms. Get well soon Paul.

Souness must have the biggest hard-on ever after hearing the news.

I am his biggest fan but if he dies, he dies.

I hope he's ok for the new season. This article from the NY Times goes into a few case studies of athletes who've had the virus. Their experiences can be roughly summarised as being unable to train properly for a few weeks, surprise at how badly they were affected and a sort period of recovery before they felt back to 100%. Obviously each case is different but we can at least console ourselves that Pogba, as a super fit young man with no particular obligations on his time in the next few weeks, is in the best possible position to make a speedy recovery with minimal lasting ill-effects.

For now he's out for 14 days.

If he wasn't infected he would be away for at least 13 days due to international duty.

Ridiculous that a senior player should allow himself to catch Covid, you don’t see the likes of Maguire being this careless.

Do some reading and don't believe everything you see on the tv. The same Fauci guy stands to profit widely from a vaccine, if his becomes the widely used one, but if people do not see this virus as all threatening no one will feel the need to take it; hence why he is in the media daily.
I do read, I am also capable of fairly rational thought, which is one of the many reasons I don't believe crap like this.

I actually started typing a reasoned response to you but I know people who believe this kind of stuff only listen to and believe things that confirm what they want to think, and frankly I can't be bothered wasting my time again, so I deleted it and replaced it with this.

Hopefully he’s one of the many that are completely fine with no lasting issues, and benefits from the rest to boot.

People need to calm down. Do you know the rate of death for people in their 20s? Now take into consideration that he's an elite athlete, what do you think the chance of him dying is?

You guys act like covid is the end of the world virus. It's really not. Maybe too much CNN for some of you.
Try telling that to the hundreds of thousands of relatives throughout the world, who have lost loved ones.

That's not a great thing to hear and I hope that he recovers from this successfully and quickly. It was bound to happen to one of our players sooner or later and I think we'll hear more reports of players contracting the virus in the next few weeks and months. The sooner we find a vaccine or successful treatment, the better. I just hope that there are no long lasting issues for Pogba.
