Not directly at fault, but in what world is this good positioning?!

This is what I was saying before.

He could be a yard further out and little bit more to his left and he makes a comfortable save low down. Defender in the middle is closing the far post off as a shooting option.

Instead before that shot, he takes 2 little steps to his right, gambles on the shot going far post and ends up rooted to the spot.

Varane undoubtedly should be tighter and showing him away from goal, but his positioning and movement there is poor.

Yep we scored 4 yesterday, but our GD has only improved by 1, or did you miss Wolves putting 3 past him?
As things stand we are on a GD of -4
And lack of scoring is the biggest reason for this. We've conceded less than Spurs.

Fair enough if you're satisfied with Antony, Hojlund and Rashford's output in the league and our combined 28 goals.

Third goal is on Varane. If I let a ball go between my legs like that my keeper would let me know that the goal is on me, and I played division 5 and 6 ( way down the system) in Sweden.

Great pass to start the attack for the first goal, and a good save with his head to stop a goal, do the best keepers save the third, probably, Onana isnt one of the best in the world when it comes to saves though. De Gea on the other hand was also quite poor at his near post so dont see why he is brought up.

Where did I say I was satisfied with our scoring rate, I'm simply pointing out that when we do play well and score, we keep being let down by goalkeeping schoolboy errors, on top of the three we conceded we had another cleared off the line.
It's obvious the defence doesn't trust him.

The ball didn't go between Varanne's legs it went wide of his outstretched right peg.
You see Ohno take two small steps to the right, he thinks the player is going for the far post, but he opens up his near post for him and is left in no mans land watching yet another simple shot hit the back of the net, he doesn't even attempt the save, he is completely flat footed

wasnt the other non pen goal another example of bad technique as well? Feel like he goes to make himself big but gets it all wrong and ends up turning his body so it skims off his chest and goes in. Cant remember exactly but couldve sworn it was just another example of him letting in a goal that isnt something easy but at same time just cant help but feel he couldve done better yet again.

You think that's weird? Wait till you hear how much we paid for Onana and downgraded.
And Onana went on a free the summer before. Thats the real joke. From Ajax, so ETH was 100% aware of his contract situation.

Would Maignan really have cost that much more than Onana? So many better alternatives out there, and I'm disappointed we didn't keep Kovar around and give him some minutes. He looked safe, composed and reassuring in pre-season, and has impressed for Leverkusen since he joined.

I’ve never seen a bigger fall off. His distribution has even disappointed me some compared to the level I thought we were getting, but his actual keeping is just so poor.

And stop talking about De Gea, he wasn’t good last year either. But yeah we need to replace Onana this summer without a doubt

Again he wasn't free.

He had agreed to join Inter in Nov 2021.

Not sure how many times you need this said.

On the third goal, Onana’s statue reaction was horrible to witness, but he would never have made that save.

There’s still time for Onana to pull himself together, but it needs to happen soon. We can’t have a keeper who makes as many mistakes as he does being first choice next season. He’d be a fine backup keeper though.

There’s no defending him IMO. Like there’s no point in any debate. The guy doesn’t move like a keeper or position himself like a keeper. There are many championship goalies that are better at just the general basics of goalkeeping. I’m not confident that he’s gonna save even the most routine saves and quite often his actions are a surprise not just to me but the players in front of him. He’s an absolute calamity.

Decent passer though I guess

Amazing game. Seemed like Onana's positioning on that last goal was a bit iffy but i'm no keeper. Still, letting a shot like that through your legs is also not great defending but it was a good strike.

Its unbelievable how much undeserved critisism this guy gets from his own fans after every game, he wasnt even at fault for any of the goals last night and he is still getting critisised.

Back in the most recent season he played for us. Whatever criticisms one wants to level at DeGea, his reflex saves should be beyond reproach.
You said he was guaranteed to save any decent shot at him.
Are we now pretending the games V west ham, Brentford, fa cup V Everton didn't happen nor the Europa League games?
Nor the numerous times he cost us cup competitions through making a mistake and then compounding them
And not just mistakes like the Sevilla game but actual weak shots from distance that he let through?

As I said, people can be a fan or non fan of onana but let's not pretend that it was a mistake to move on from ddg, who was here five years more than he should have been

How many goals are scored when the ball goes through the defenders legs, answer, loads.
Defenders can't just stand with there legs together all the time.

At least Varane is attempting to block the shot, whereas Onana is statuesque in the wrong postcode!

the last goal was absolutely shambolic from everyone

why the feck did everyone push forward for a corner in the 95th minute?

Onana not even being arsed to dive was just the cherry on the cake

There’s no question whatsoever that De Gea made several mistakes last season, including the Benrahma goal that turned out to be the final straw for club supporters, but I doubt anyone here can name even two keepers on the planet who last season didn’t make 4 or 5 mistakes that led to goals last season.

However, upgrading on a position is never a bad idea when possible. And so ETH thought that Onana would be an upgrade on De Gea — which I hope is not considered to be a controversial statement by our touchy Onana defenders here — largely on the ground that although Onana as skilled a shot stopper as De Gea that his passing skills would elevate our possession and thus attack, and yes as I’ve proven repeatedly here, that Onana would “transform” our attack. It hasn’t quite worked out that way and thus we have a keeper who just isn’t anywhere near the shot stopper De Gea but that his undeniable superior ball control skills have made zero difference to our ability to control and win matches.

If we have any real intention of pushing back into the PL title conversation next year we’ll have to have a serious discussion about to do about Onana. As it stands right, we need to go back into the transfer market even if it means relegating Onana to the bench or selling him for the 5-10m max we’d get for him.
