Much improved performance. But for a keeper who’s supposedly great at playing out from the back he’s surprisingly bad at it.
We just don't have the outlet for it, the team ahead of him is built for counter attack over the top football - Shaw and Martinez back would have shown up what was missing but alas they are back out.

I'm not Onana's biggest fan from a goalkeeping perspective but tbf to him our team doesn't give him many passing options. At Ajax specifically in that 2019 team he had De Ligt, Blind and De Jong right in front him, all who could take the ball comfortably under pressure along with the fullbacks and all of them could play a pass through the lines. At United the only Defenders who can do that are Martinez and Shaw. There are probably a lot of passes he could play that he simply can't because Varane and Maguire are just not that good in tight spaces under pressure. The same with Casemiro. So I'm not going to judge his passing until he has better options ahead of him. He can't even really go long woth this team although he has shown glimpses of picking out long passes.

He has to keep performing like this on one vs one, crosses and shots. When you play for big club there is little room for error.

To be fair it was by far his best performance. Unfortunately his past performances still make my heart race and blood pressure sure, whenever it looks like someone might have a shot, or he's got the ball at his feet.

He was excellent today. He keeps kicking the ball out of touch under no pressure though. He is making us harder to press. It’s the same thing as Rasmus. The talent is very clearly there with him but his form is still too erratic

Excellent performance. Some top saves and he was great at claiming crosses. Deserved a clean sheet. He's growing in confidence.

Onana’s saves were fantastic but his distribution is still a serious worry. There was supposed to be something about his world class distribution that would directly improve our ball control and that has never once happened once this season. But a keeper is only as good as his ability to make saves and that he did today, easily earning MOTM honors.

Exactly my thoughts.

He played well, made some great saves, one of the saves was insanely fast reactions. But his distribution is not looking anywhere near the hype.

You can only distribute to what’s in front of you.
This high press villa when you have no Licha or Shaw in the team. No comfortable ball playing will be had

Agreed.

We don't have big issues playing out from the back like last season. And the big reason for that is due to who is currently in goal and how opposition managers adapt their game plan out of possession to not aggressively press us high up the pitch. The game at Anfield was a good example of that and again yesterday Villa's high press was never going to be effective against us unless Onana makes a mistake. And this is without having both Martinez and Shaw who have been injured for large periods of the season.

It's not about what Onana does in possession but rather what the opposition are doing against us is which is telling. Our big issue now is a lack of athleticism at CB and in midfield, on top of the injuries to some key players for a more proactive play style.

He is doing very well statistics wise. In the the top 3 of the main metrics for goalkeeper.

One of his best performances in Utd shirt, just want to see some of that distribution glimpsed away at Spurs and Arsenal early in season

Thought he played well but I think this is the baseline we should expect - I don't think he was spectacular or anything but was solid and saved what he should have.

Encouraging performance and heading in the right direction though.

Good lord, is the bar so low that we are hailing him for making saves you would be fuming at if he didn't?

He did okay yesterday but as others have already said, that's the least that should be expected of him.

He was excellent. Yes any top side needs excellent consistently from their GK but it’s still worth praising. In how many positions are we getting the ‘least we should be expecting?’. The whole team is full of sub par performers so anyone meeting the required expectation in a single game will get credit.

The one on one save was the best for me. Terrific chance for Villa but he closed down the distance really well.

I’m nowhere near convinced on Onana. His first half of the season was atrocious but I can acknowledge a top GK display when I see one.

The issue is also Europe where he was shocking this season. We’d be in the next round of it weren’t for his mistakes. Our football was actually pretty good in the CL

Some excellent shot stopping and highball catching. He looks back being confident.

From a keeper that usually can’t save anything to a keeper that’s starting saving shots. He deserves praise. Improvement although like you said it’s the very least a keeper should be doing.

Shows you how stats can be misleading. He did well in the last match but before that, some of the goals he conceded were shocking. Next season he might perform better. DDG also shat the bed multiple times in his first season (although tbf he was a young GK).

I don‘t think so… We‘d have 2 more points from the Galatasaray game and possibly 1 point from the first leg vs Bayern. That‘s not enough.

You can also look at the penalty he saved at the very last minute when we got our only win of the group stage. Without that save we‘d failed even further…

Yes, he should have done much better…But he isn‘t the only reason we didn‘t qualify.

2 or 3 better games in a row. He's looking better as the team in front of him improves.

Very encouraging all round.

Distribution still a bit iffy, he had a good game, saves were all ones you'd expect him to make really. Loved that 1v1 save, that's what you want from a keeper in that situation.

Hopefully he can build on this and get some confidence back and push on now.

He's definitely putting together some solid performances.

The McT goal shows that it's not always easy to save a powerful shot/header even if it's basically right at the goalie. Regardless of Onana's other flaws, he's always been excellent at saving these shots and deserves to be praised for that.

Most of the time he does it it's fine. He's challenging an opposition player to move up out of the line to pressure him, which gives us a numbers advantage when he plays it past him.

He does do it a bit too often though. How much of that is him and how much of it is our players not moving into space to receive the ball, I'm not sure.

It’s ok to still be fuming about his horrifying first half of the season, but give the man his due for a job very well done yesterday away at Villa in what was a must win game to keep our CL qualification hopes alive.

Well done, Andre!

For what it's worth, at Ajax Onana made rookie mistakes first half of the season (Taken, he actually was a rookie then) and if it wasn't for Peter Bosz's faith in him he would have been dropped probably by every other coach.

My favourite moment in the game bar the last minute goal was him absolutely clattering everyone saving Watkins chance. That's the onana we want to see!

That's probably right. People like us, who had nowhere near the talent as young footballers to even get a 5 minute look at the academy cannot possibly have any idea how hard it is to walk into Old Trafford as a new keeper, especially succeeding David De Gea. He shat his pants for the six months but he's beginning to look the part.
