People just need to look at Madrid to see the difference a proper DM can make. Fabinho is who everyone wants and for good reason, he's been great this season. What people forget is although he's the more defensive of the two between him and Bakayoko he is no proper anchor. He would stray forward, influence the game further forward too. He played in a midfield two, playing in one of the most exciting and young squads we've seen in a while. His expectations here would be to sit behind Pogba and allow him to flourish as he is our best player. It's not the same. Coupled with the fact that he wants to play RB to make the upcoming World Cup squad and you got a dillema.
Dier has played in both DM and CB And has looked solid in both. You're not going to get Scholes cross field balls with him but you'll get is a player who is happy to help his midfield partners shine. He will anchor the defence and midfield, allowing our FB's be more attacking, he'll allow Ander to press opposition players higher up in their half, rather than waiting for them to get into our half and most importantly he'll push Pogba forward and allow to play as a pseudo 10, which is where he's at his best. He'll recycle posession and break up play to help get the best out of our other players.
The signing may seem underwhelming but we of all fans would know that hype doesn't equate to success. Di Maria, Falcao, Depay etc. all say hello. The caf were all excited about Morgan and he turned out shite for us, so maybe we aren't as knowledgable as we think we are.
The way some of you go on about Dier, you'd think he had the technique of a Sunday league player. He's actually quite good on the ball and although it isn't his speciality, he's a more than capable passer.
Let a world class manager do his job and create a functioning team, leave the pretty passes to Herrera and Pogba.
