Amazing it took EtH until the end of the season to set the midfield up to benefit us.
Want him sacked twice after this half. Why not play like this for the other parts of the season. We would have been worse because of the injuries, true, but we would be in the CL.
This is very specific plan for getting in behind City's defence. Against some midtable team this almost certainly wouldn't work, and neither would the midfield to be fair.

Injuries were a massive reasons for our failure this season (not the only reason)

Varane and Lisandro have been quality.

You can’t play this patient build up and long passing without it.
You can't play against most teams this way anyway, because they will not press and play a high line like City. These tactics can work fine, when you're the underdog. Not over a whole season

Some posters here suffer from recency bias, hindsight bias, and every type of bias out there!

We played like this against Liverpool and had success.

It doesn't have to be so defensive as well, we just structure and discipline on the pitch.

Hopefully it's all academic and he gets sacked with a nice send-off.

Got the tactics spot on today. So why did he persist all season with a scheme that clearly didn't work?
He's playing counter attack. He has two good central defenders. Casemiro isn't there.

But it's only half time. This second half will be nuts

Martínez can also help with faster build up through the thirds in other systems too.

Unfortunately he really is that important.

Hope he goes out on a high.

please Erik don't revert to old by making terrible subs and terrible tactical changes.

It doesn’t really. You don’t assess managers on a single game of football. Will be good for him to go out on a high.
Good answer. I wasn’t saying we should by the way. Just wanted to see some views

Even without them two, it took him 90% of the season to realise that Amrabat can be quite useful, and packing the midfield is a decent alternative to conceding 20 shots a game.
No this is revisionism. Amrabat played earlier in the season and was poor. Most fans were calling for him to be dropped

Love the game so far, but Im almost more annoyed with Ten Hag now  - why insist with his stupid tactics for so long when having an actual midfield was so obvious.

Seems like we've switched to containment mode now, which worked wonderfully every other time we tried to defend a lead this season.

Now I'm nervous. :nervous:
Keep thinking of the semi final. Except we're facing Manchester City not Coventry City :nervous:

Ten Hag's subs are going to be absolutely crucial.

Far too slow to make subs. Everyone can see a change is needed.

Really isn't the time for his famous 'forward off for a defender' sub. Set us up very well today though

Worth keeping in mind our talent for pissing away 2-0 leads this season

Wouldn't have minded Amad instead of Hojlund, can see the point though
Hojlund will run and duel a bit better for the balls in behind which is what we need more of while they attack.

5 mins to go and an Amad and Mount sub makes a lot of sense.

Crazy to see SAF being a nervous fan
SAF was the ultimate manager. He understood how football worked from board level right to the academy. The FA cup is instrumental for us as it provides us with European football.
