I hope who ever takes over would let ETH continue to do his job and even back him more, he has the right ideas and also the tools to implement it. It would be a shame if a Tuchel situation occurs, good thing for ETH he is viewed with high esteem among the fan base, hopefully that would count for something.
One would hope. New owners, new era and maybe they have their own ideas.
I think we would not be in the state we're if Arnold was installed earlier. Or maybe he recognised it and basically did everything the opposite of what Woodward did

First time in a long time you don't see the players snoozing through games, this was common under Ole and Mourinho were we had opponent outplaying us not because they were better players but because our players simply allowed it. Under ETH there's always a structure in and out of possession.
Wolves got tired, we did not with the exception of Eriksen

This has always been my lingering doubt ever since the sale news surfaced. It is hard not to look at the Boehly Tuchel situation without thinking how it may be the case with United.
Different situation and no doubt our situation is very different. He is building something, that is evident even to the dumbest owner. I am not worried at all

We've repeatedly fallen into this trap of letting the first team manager dictate the entire clubs strategy.
So you rather wsnt to limit his influence? Makes zero sense in ETHs case imo, he id building something like Fergie. He is not Moyes or Jose

Feels good to have a manager that fits the bill. Really hope he can carry on the improvement on and off the pitch, he’s done an amazing job so far. Seems to have made the step up look easy and has just surfed his way through his short time here so far, delivering on all fronts.

What he’s done with the team is just brilliant.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
Do you think Arnold would still be here after the change in ownership?
He has a reputation of being exceptional at commercial deals which will be important if it isn’t state ownership, clearly has a very good relationship with ETH and has fantastic experience at the club. I think it’s likely he stays in the short-term at least.

So far so good, but Arteta's really raised the bar for him now. City's resources are no longer an excuse for us.

I just hope this doesn't become a distraction. On paper it's a great idea but it better not take him away from the first team

Great start for ETH thus far though he will prove to be a world class manager at United.

From what I’ve read, it’s limited management with him discussing formations, where he wants certain players to play etc whilst the other coaches still the game and take training etc.

makes sense if it means he gets players who he thinks are on the verge of breaking into the first team

but yes, it is an added workload that isn’t ideal of course

Not necessarily due to him. Our core is just really solid. Varane, Martinez, Casemiro and Shaw bring a solidity to the team that we haven't had since 2011
Well that’s exactly due to him. Shaw for most of his time at United has been an enigma, Varane last year the pundits were able to criticise because our managers couldn’t get the best out of a WC CB, or were too scared to drop the weaklink, Martinez and Casemiro were his signings.

ETH has done what top managers do and other managers fail to do.

Arteta has been there 2 and half seasons. I would say he’s ahead of Arteta in the short space of time. Arteta didn’t have to implement a radical new style of play.

Yep, Martinez and Casemiro have made a world of difference to getting the best out of Varane.

Nobody did well last season anyway but those two are just so much better than Maguire and McTominay, and must give Varane way more confidence to do his own job when he can trust the players around him.

Another way of looking at it. He needs players to fit his system ready to come in and cover injuries. He knows that unlike Pep he can’t sign 4 FB’s 5cb’s etc so that next best thing is to mould the youngsters.

Good to see both manager and player are on same page. Too many clowns wants to start drama with hilarious takes on this incident, like how EtH was so wrong or how they saw that kind of a person Rashford is.
Exactly. Also it sends the perfect message to the rest of the squad. If you get punished, you will be given another chance. You can hold a grudge or come back and play well. This also applies to Garnacho. The opposite example would be Ronaldo, punished then given a chance and also made captain but held a grudge and didn’t even play well.

Managing the U23s is a job for Erik seven Hag. The rest of the Hags are controlling different parts of the club as well. I’m sure Ten Hag will have his full focus on the first team.

Lets wait until the end of the season first. Arteta thus far hasn't even finished in the top 4.

That being said I think ETH is on track 6 months into his stint compared to Arteta's near 3 years.

Yup but Arteta is also an example of what happens when you give the right manager time. Not blind trust, but trust based on deserved progression. Ten Hag wont turn us into title winners in 1 season, next season if we spend big in the summer and address the attack and CM and have some of the younger guys like Antony/Sancho pushing their potential more then we could compete for the title and big trophies IMO.

The club at a higher level needs to be doing that. Not the first team head coach. The tail shouldn't be wagging the dog.

I'm hoping he doesn't get too comfortable with this level of control/influence Murtough and Arnold are seemingly giving him.

If we do get a new ownership who bring in their own DOF, they'll want things done their own way and want the first team manager actually just doing the job in his own remit.

This is only a bad thing when your manager is not a good manager or the right long term manager, but is a good thing when you find the right long term manager. 0 doubts in my mind that Ten Hag is that guy for us.

  • Nobody seriously believed Moyes was of the required level or player good or attacking football.
  • Van Gaal was approaching the end of his career so was never going to be a long term appointment (and turned out he was way too negative)
  • Mourinho was always a 3 year manager.. and he stayed 2.5 years
  • Ole was a hail mary because Woodward kept failing but again, nobody seriously believed he was the next big thing as a manager
Ten Hag is the first one who is at a good age, has proven his teams can play great football, and has already shown a massive improvement at the club. Having him guide the younger groups can only be a positive. It means he wants to be here long term rather than look to move to Bayern or Barca or Madrid after a few decent years.

Oh please, it's arsenal. The 3-5 game winless streak is just around the corner.

Ten Hag:
“For me, cooperation between all the different departments is crucial to get the right culture in a club. Like at Ajax, when I entered Manchester United the reserve team was isolated.
“It was no longer really part of the academy, but it wasn’t part of the first team either. I changed that immediately - just as I did when I entered Amsterdam.
“At Ajax, the reserve team came under the responsibility of the manager. That was the only way I could have influence on the flow of young, talented players towards the first team.
“Of course I still give the coaches freedom to work, but I also give them direction, by saying for example ‘I want that player to start making minutes in that position.’
“So the final responsibility lies with me about how the second team performs and the flow of players that goes from the reserve team to the first team.”
“This is totally new for the people at Manchester United, but I had already discussed it during the introductory talks with the club management.
“They were immediately open to it. They looked at Ajax with admiration because of how the club always manages to get youth players successfully through the system.
“There is a constant influx of talents at Ajax and I explained that’s because the basis of everything at the club is the youth academy.
“When I was going home from my work at Ajax in the evening, I would often see the under-8s or under-9s training and I would stay to watch.
“In the final phase of a player’s academy years and the step up to the first team, it is all about the structure between the academy director, the reserve-team coach and the manager. This is what I mean when I talk about cooperation.”
“I talked to (director of football) John Murtough about this at length before I came to Manchester and he set it up in such a way that I can work this way here too.
“In the Netherlands, I had made the step towards taking more of a managerial role at Ajax. If you don't have competent people around you, you can't delegate and you're going to do it all yourself anyway.
“But if you do have competent people, you have to bring them into your vision and then you can delegate tasks. An example is the training process with the senior team. I know this is in good hands with (coach) Mitchell van der Gaag.
“Because he is at the training sessions, I can often take an overview view. Then, as a manager, you see a lot more than if you are working on the training exercises yourself.”
Tbf he's talking almost exclusively about the reserve team - i.e. the U-23s. The Academy should be left completely to the youth specialists.

He's given the players more creative freedom. What's summed our build up play these last few years is been players who look as if the last thing they wanted to do was make a decision, which led to dwelling on the ball, stilted moved and sideways passing to shift the responsibility

He's brilliant, the people that proceed him in Murtough and Arnold are where the issues are. If United get competent individuals across the board in the hierarchy it will be brilliant. There's optimism a sale will see the end of Murtough. ETH alongside a very dilligent DOF will be fantastic. City have shown that the structure of the club is more important than just the money. Arsenal are showing this aswell with Arteta / Edu, Pep / Tixi.

More investment around youth prospects relatively unknown will be brilliant. Not just flavour of the month signings similar to the strategy Chelsea are doing it doesn't build a cohesive team.

This guy is brilliant.

He knows exactly what he wants and goes for it. If he’s properly backed with players he wants I think he will get us challenging for everything again.

Win our game in hand and we're 3rd, one point ahead of 4th and five points ahead of 5th.

At the start of the season I'd have snapped your hand off if you'd offered me that position by New Year's Day.

Exactly! It used to frustrate the hell out of me the last few years, seeing no one, apart from Bruno, taking responsibility, always passing the buck, with simple sideways or backwards passes. Now, we are seeing some proper team play, with everyone making a contribution.

Who do you think is allowing him this autonomy for christ sakes

You think that EtH has just gone in there and demanded all this without the blessing of those who literally gave him the contract in the first place?

Murtough is EtH's boss for feck's sakes.:lol:

Wait what's wrong with Murtough? These are the people who appointed ETH for god sake, ETH even insulted how the club has been run in his interview and they obviously agreed with him. The worse you can say about Murtough is that he delegates a lot of DoF responsibility to the manager, transfer targets etc, but also this is true before a lot of the shakeup in scouting etc which has come off his own back and it looks to be pretty well regarded.

Look at it this way as well, it wasn't Murtough who spent months chasing De Jong was it, once we moved on to realistic transfers they happened quickly, even if it meant overpaying they got exactly what ETH wanted.

You can do that if all runs perfectly. We are far from it. ETH is our last big hope almost to get it right, we have been shit too long. And I fully trust him, it is not like Ole or Jose

Erik ten Hag getting involved with the u21/reserves is exactly what you want your head coach to do. Because the u21s/reserves are just one step away from first team football, and having the first team head coach guiding the players and coaching staff at that level, can only benefit the young hopefuls who would be better prepared in their understanding of the principles of the head coach at first team level.
