I love gaming as much as the next, err, gamer. The issue is finding time for it so I need to be very selective about what I decide to play.

So far what I’ve seen of Hogwarts Legacy ain’t quite convincing me.

Elden Ring if you like no hand holding.

I haven't been this excited for a game since RDR2

Do you have the choice whether to be a good wizard or a complete cnut? Also do you get any say in which house you're in?

You can be antagonistic or agreeable and... so far not much seems to change but yes, you can pick your house - you answer a couple questions, the Sorting Hat chooses a house for you but if you don't like its choice you can immediately change it.

Brilliant, thanks.

Definitely going to be 2 playthroughs. Honorable and then a complete bastard.

I wasn't clear... I don't know enough yet so it could change (and there's a lot of exposition) but I've prob put 12 hours minimum in so far: you do get dialogue which gets you in 'trouble' or gets you 'off' (don't) but it hasn't changed anything obvious is what I meant. For examply, you get admonished from time to time if you've broken the rules, and can choose options that are lies in the dialogue, but again no obvious impact. NPCs can be bitchy to you as well, and you can then respond in kind or more peacefully but the resulting dialogue in those situations so far has been of the, 'you're a dick but I'll give you a chance' kind of variety.

I will add that as much as it feels a bit slow 'cos of all the exposition and tutorials (you can't pause cutscenes, only skip - but if you are on PS5 for example you can home out to pause), I can't stop playing it and I wasn't sure I'd be saying that at this time yesterday. If you have any interest in its universe, you'll have a blast regardless! The world is great.

All sounds great anyway. Thanks.

I'm a very casual gamer, did you get a pre-release?

Honestly I'm shocked that this game is getting such fantastic reviews. In so many ways it was set to become a hype trap. I'm so glad it isn't. Wife and I both plan to have a lazy weekend to play to our hearts content.

Anyone know what the performance is like on PC? Seen mostly PS5 reviews
I've only just started (got to the castle) and so far it's actually not bad for a launch game, almost impressive in fact. Though that being said, it's not particularly amazing to look at either, but it's not shabby.

I have a reasonable build and can push everything on Ultra with full AA, no bloom and no DOF and render at a true 1440p at ~130fps (that's lightyears beyond the consoles). With Raytracing (and so far sadly it looks more like console implementation, but I'll test it more when I get to the open world), I can get a solid 60fps on "Ultra" RT (we'll use that term loosely) with DLSS set to Quality.

So all in all, it's not too bad at all. Then again, as I've said a few times in this thread, they really aren't amateurs at this even if people didn't really think much of the type of game they developed before. Disney Infinity games were way more complicated to pull off technically than this in many ways.

I actually know what reviewers meant now when they said the combat was one of the best things about the game. It's surprisingly really well implemented.

Be careful on Twitter if you haven't finished the game. The boycotters are spoiling the ending.

Ok yellow shirt, calm down.

No I got the red and gold one, grifffinidoor or something welsh like that. I know enough to know about the world to know they aren't the bad guys though, I wanted the snake ones.

On another note, it amuses me that NPC's are still so NPC in 2023. The lack of interaction is woeful. In a world like this, where the fans are invested, they really should have made more of an effort there!

I've only just started so not sure how deep it goes, but the basic combat is actually decent. It's an interesting start.

I'm not sure where I'm at with how much they use the magic names when they cast. I think it would be annoying with every button press obviously, but actually I feel like it could be a tad higher for a bit more atmosphere. The mrs looked at me in shock when I said that

Absolutely not Elden Ring if you only have limited time and need to be selective. I’d take a good storyline any day, so it’s easy to pick up for an hour or two after a busy week.

How these people see themselves as "the good guys" while acting like such petty brats will never cease to amaze me.
Just what happens when someones entire existence is defined by their twitter bubble. Take solace in the fact it'll be one of the least successful boycotts of all time.

All they're going to do is encourage more hate towards trans people. It baffles me why they think this is a good strategy.

What graphics mode are people using on the PS5?

I started in HFR Performance and went to balanced (which I think you need a 120Hz TV for). I've had only one area with severe drops in balanced, and it was a surprise, as not a very demanding scene; the same area was better but not perfect with HFR.
Ive gone with balanced so far. Might change to performance mode later. Game just looks so good.

It's almost like people are not one homogeneous group and to be honest despite the fact that I absolutely hate j k Rowling and what she stands for I recognise that people are free to buy this game if they are inclined to ignore that money may go to her or don't care/want to because they agree with their views. In fact every trans person I know is just ignoring this game completely, and if you want to use Twitter bubbles as an example then God help you.

To be fair most trans people and allys are regular and fairly open minded, or at least ones I have met. Just on twitter you get the most radical people who have nothing better to do all day but tweet their opinions. I agree they put a black cloud over reasonable discourse and may mistakenly be seen as the majority so it is up to us to realise they do not represent everyone

Will I have to read a few of the fecking books to enjoy this or is it stand-alonish enough to introduce someone new to the setting? Never watched a movie etc.

I'm a sucker for single player open-world games so with these reviews I'll definitely want to play this. And am stupid enough to go through the trouble of discovering the world for it.

I started watching the Star Wars saga - not particularly enjoying it - just to increase my enjoyment when I assemble SW Lego sets, which I adore.

No mate, it's standalone enough. I don't know much about the world or the books and apart from all the weird names for things, the story isn't losing me at all. Not that there's much to it so far!

No worries mate. I will add a couple of things:

1) The outdoor scenes will most definitely be worse, the engine isn't perfect (but I don't think there's anything disastrous that a couple of patches won't fix) so I expect maybe a reasonable drop there.
2) I am playing it on multi-monitor mode with streams and things also running on 2 other screens, so those figures would obviously be higher if I dedicate the full power to the game.

Listen via audible. I just finished 4 and covering 5. The movies aren't quite the same imo
