Still annoying to lose him as soon as he's come back but far better than it could've been for sure.

Hopefully this will be the end of his injury woes when he gets back this time.

I feel like 8 weeks might be being very conservative here just to give himself as long as he needs to be ready again, which is fair enough. From what I've read with this being a sprain rather than a tear it should be more like 4-6 weeks so hopefully will be back a bit sooner than expected and we don't need to write off his season or anything.
Sprains are usually up to 3 weeks. But I do not know how careful the recovery and rehab process for professional athletes.

This is a real bummer. I think we're going to have to play Shaw at LCB. Having a ball playing defender really makes us a lot better.

So that’s a pretty good outcome. Grade 1 or 2 MCL sprain (probably 2). Could have been so much worse. Main thing is he’ll be good as new afterwards. If a ligament needs surgical repair there’s always a worry that there might be permanent consequences. I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question that he could be back in four weeks.

Just so long as he doesn’t follow Malacia’s rehab protocol :nervous:

Is that source reliable?!
The original source is this bloke:

Seems to be an Argentine journalist for a sports channel there. Has 800k+ followers and there's footage of him interviewing Messi etc, so he's likely legit.

We can’t play Shaw at LCB without having at least one of Bissaka or Malacia available for selection. Unless, of course, you suggest slow Lindelof as our starting LB, or a brand new full back role for Antony

I'd rather we didn't because we miss him so much at LB when we do. Rashford instantly looks half the player without him.

We have 4 fit CBs at the moment, if the manager can't adapt and find a way to play with 2 of them in the team then he should be sacked now.

As for playing out from the back, get Mainoo to drop deeper or concentrate on using the fullbacks to play out. Both Dalot and Shaw are more than comfortable enough on the ball to do it.

Season is a total write off for him

By the clubs timeline, that would bring him back around early April. If April 13th against Bournemouth is a tentative return date for him, that would make him available for the last 6 PL games plus any potential later round FA cup ties.

Seems likely we’ll see him again this season. It’s obviously not ideal, but if when he limped off yesterday you had offered me 8 weeks out or take our chances, I’d have taken the 8 weeks because I was fearing a serious injury like an ACL. So this could’ve been a lot worse.

He’s had rotten luck this season for sure.

I don't think there's much you can do about it - it's a freak accident injury.
You could protect him for 3 months and it could happen again - it's just bad luck.
It’s not that I’m worried about. I’m worried about rushing him back with a weak knee and him busting his ACL after heading the ball out and landing on it too hard.

8 fecking weeks FML

It's a bit shit, but I'll take 8 weeks in a season that is already basically a write off when the alternative looked like it could have been half of next season as well and him potentially not coming back the same player.

Gutted for him…he was outstanding yesterday as he is most games. That was a really shitty unnecessary challenge from Coufal also Cnut.

Fair, but that could happen anywhere anytime. He could bust his ACL in training if all it takes is landing to hard. He could bust it at home playing with his kids.

Here’s a good publication on MCL injury outcomes in football players.

The principal finding from this investigation was that after MCL injury, 71% of European professional male soccer athletes were able to RTP successfully, missing a median of 33 days and 4 games. The incidence of MCL reinjury was low (3%), and midfielder was the only playing position associated with decreased field time when compared with control athletes 2 seasons after injury. Meanwhile, injured athletes demonstrated equivalent performance metrics after RTP when compared with control athletes. No significant differences in field time or performance metrics were identified in athletes with MCL injuries managed surgically versus nonoperatively.

In this series, 86% of MCL injuries were classified as moderate or severe, whereas only 14% of patients underwent surgery. This is consistent with the current management recommendation for MCL injuries, emphasizing a nonoperative approach for the majority of injuries, even in the case of grade 3 MCL injuries.16,17,24,38 Current recommendations for MCL rehabilitation propose a recovery period of 1 to 4 weeks for grade 1 or 2 MCL injuries, and 5 to 7 weeks for grade 3 MCL injuries

All makes the “at least 8 weeks” prognosis from the club seem very conservative.

Its quite obviously more risky with the current injury

Really tough luck for him that he’s basically been injured and out of regular football (by the time he realistically comes back from this) for about a year

Well at least it's not a long term injury requiring surgery. We'll miss him badly in the coming weeks. He'll have missed the guts of an entire season between his time out with this injury and the foot injury last year :(

Bad news, but could have been much worse. Hope he doesn't get rushed back.

Gutted for him, only just came back from a long term injury to now sustain another is really unlucky. From our point of view it’s a blow to any upturn in results for the club, and will ultimately make the task of qualifying for UCL that much more difficult. Silver lining is that it could have been worse and he will still play a part later in the season.

Luke Shaw at LCB then. Can't have Varane and Harry stumbling over the place trying to take a pass from Onana. Shaw must fill in there with Dalot at LB and AWB at RB.

Not really how it works - they have all the machines/testing to make sure its healed fully, then he'll do physio and grass work. His knee won't be weak when he returns, it doesn't even require surgery. All of that is factored into the 8 weeks recovery time.

He's barely played football in the last 10 months. And he won't play for at least 2 more months.

This is concerning. It looks like Lisandro is pretty injury prone and might have to be replaced soon.

Wait what happened there? There's so little news apart from the report that he had a setback in Dec.

Should think about selling him at this point

I still for the life of me don't know why our players are the only ones who don't fall over to ground when someone breathes on their back. Every other team do it bar us.
