Great news that it's relatively short term. We'll miss him for sure though. For me, he's our most important, and best player by a country mile.

Great news - could have been a lot worse. Put a real dampener on the result yesterday.

Looks like there’s a chance his first game back may be Liverpool in April….

It’s the best case scenario by a mile?
We have a tough run in, he really only misses Villa and City away. Back for Chelsea away and Liverpool not long after

The best case scenario according to that YouTube video from the sports doc was a grade one MCL which would’ve kept him out for 2-3 weeks.

I thought there was a reasonable chance it was an ACL so that's actually a huge relief. No player ever really comes back from an ACL, even Van Dijk isn't as good as he used to be.

Just seen the news. Thankful it’s not the worst! Sad we won’t see his ability building out from the back continue. Varane is woeful at it in comparison, the rest aren’t really worth commenting on…

Well, it could have been a lot worse and we'll see him again this season.

If you look at his Ajax appearances/injury record it's pretty good and if you think back to last season I recall him playing in virtually every game before his freak injury. His injury at the start of the season was just a continuation of that earlier injury that hadn't healed and this one seems another freak accident. I don't think we should write him off as a Phil Jones just yet.

'Arry return arc.

But seriously, the position that Martinez plays normally (middle of the 3 defenders, pinging passes around, mopping up on defence) suits him quite well. It's just that seemingly all our CBs prefer that position.

We need a guy who can step up, win the ball aggressively to prevent counters and can carry the ball a bit. Someone like Rudiger would do.

Is this ‘source’ just trying to make an educated guess and get ahead of the rest of the news?

Think I’ll wait for official confirmation but feels a very early prognosis considering he was still on the pitch less than 26 hours ago.

By the time he's back he'll basically have gone a year without having a sustained period of playing for us. Horrendous luck.
Yeah. He's one of our best players (arguably best) and so far he has missed so many games for us. Since Martinez arrived, we played 95 games in all competitions. He was unavilable for 34 of those because of injuries, that is 35.7% of games. That percentage will rise even more over next 2 months before he comes back.

6 weeks could have easily been 6 months, glad he'll be back soon and no surgery is required.

Shame he misses some games - really enjoy watching him and he adds soo much to this team.

Please don’t rush him back. If he needs more than 2 months then make sure he gets it

I don't think there's much you can do about it - it's a freak accident injury.
You could protect him for 3 months and it could happen again - it's just bad luck.

Neither Martinez nor ETH can catch a break. Hopefully all our injury bad luck is squeezed into this one season.

Very unfortunate for Martinez and the squad. He will be heavily missed and have a big impact on whether we can continue to move up the table.

Now confirmed on the Athletic - could’ve been worse, but 8 weeks at this crucial stage of the season is still a big blow.

Lads, he’s out for 4-8 weeks. It’s not too bad.

I think it's more in the context of he's also missed the majority of the last 8 months. If he'd been playing every game up until this point it might not feel too bad but to finally get him back in the side and looking like his old self, only to lose him for 2 more months is pretty jarring.

At least his dodgy ankle should be in great shape after another month or 2 on the sidelines!

Could've easily been 6 months. Hopefully we don't rush him back and the others step up in the meanwhile. Shaw at LCB? As long as Casemiro and Bruno get their shit together, at least our midfield will be solid.

I feel like 8 weeks might be being very conservative here just to give himself as long as he needs to be ready again, which is fair enough. From what I've read with this being a sprain rather than a tear it should be more like 4-6 weeks so hopefully will be back a bit sooner than expected and we don't need to write off his season or anything.

I see you were correct here with the sprained MCL prediction as was the guy on the video.

Is the 6-8 weeks out not quite a lot for a sprain though? I thought this seemed more the timeframe for a grade 3 tear

Thanks!

Not really - 6 weeks is generally the minimum I’d ever want from anyone before returning to intense activity. Knee injuries more so. It’s so easy to think you’re ready but when the intensity goes up before it’s adequately healed, that’s when you’ll just add weeks/months to recovery. A simple ankle sprain can take just as long as a minor, non-surgical required ankle fracture.

I imagine ETH will flirt the idea of his return in a press conference in the last week of March.

I'm just rewatching the game as i've missed most of it yesterday, and he even looks in pain whilst on the sideline, talking to EtH & the united doc. Didn't run properly after and tried to sprint, which failed, when Maguire messed up once more.. Really weird they let him back on, he's a player we should be very careful with as he's probably the most important player of the team.

I really hope this has just been bad luck - both injuries were contact injuries so it would seem so. He's a great age and if we can keep him fit for the bulk of 3-4 seasons he'll be a key player for us

It's undeniably a steep dropoff from Martinez to any of Varane, Maguire, Lindelof and Evans but I would hate to see him rushed back like he was earlier in the season when he clearly hadn't recovered from his metatarsal break. Best just to write this season off for Martinez and hope that our newfound scoring form allows us to outscore most of our remaining opponents.

I would guess we might not see him for a bit longer, will need weeks to get back up to full contact you would assume.

It wouldn't be an issue if our other CBs weren't so bog standard, Ineos have a lot of work on their hands in summer.

Better than feared. Team needs to step up, and show that they can function without him. With Shaw, Dalot, Mainoo and Casemiro we have enough players comfortable on the ball to build from the back, even if Martinez is a key piece in that.
