The Second RedCafe Sheep Draft

Yep - could have. Depends on how honest harms is, I suppose. We'll see soon enough when it's mornin' out in California.
I completely missed @harms ' post  . I guess if he's honest, then I know all four picks. I'm probably wrong with everything though. as usual

No one goes for a keeper as 1st pick, no matter how much of a GOAT he can be...at least not until now. Highly surprising!

Well, as suggested above, it really ain't that surprising in terms of, say, tactical drafting: Rather than wasting a pick on an unlikely GOAT gamble, you sort out that position right away with an absolute sterling (and a much safer) pick.

For all we know, an obvious keeper round will come about - and the small handful of keepers on that level will be blocked. It's not an unlikely scenario, actually - and then you'll be laughing, having made that tactical choice in the very first round.

As a 2nd pick, yes. Absolute waste of a first pick imo. If you have a partial chance of a good outfield player (maybe not GOAT) vs a GOAT keeper, I know which I'll go for in first pick.

Last time was @Crustanoid (I think) in a '60s snake draft with Schmeichel. Pretty sure he got dicked over and bombed out soon after, despite having a brilliant retro team, but one which lacked the pizzazz that is only fleetingly available in the first couple of rounds of a draft.

Not saying I would have gone for it myself. But given the very high likelihood of all GOATs (outfield) being blocked (that has pretty much happened here, and if anyone has landed one that is down to sheer luck, obviously), it's a plausible route to go.

Point being that if you can't land a GOAT, the quality of player you CAN land will be available later on as well. And this round had sheep galore written all over it too. Better to end up with a GOAT keeper than a sheep - and it might turn out that a comically high number of managers will indeed get sheeped here.

Also - tactically, I'd say you go for him as your first choice or not at all. Because he is a much likelier backup option (plenty might go for him as a 2dn or 3rd pick, as we might see when the results are in).

Pretty much sums it up. Not to mention the inevitable blocks it would cause in rounds two and three.

This round was always going to be carnage with the small pool; especially considering it was the opening round so no one has any positions filled.

It might be good to have a sheep that is of course crap, but one that you have some connection with or could do a job of selling.

If my pick fits within the criteria for sheep, why not? I'll let Skizzo and other managers to confirm that it fits the 'sheep criteria'.

I thought you were joking. To me it would be completely absurd to let the managers pick their own sheep - it defeats the whole purpose of the thing. Or much of the purpose, anyway.

Okay, so I thought the sheep for this draft would have been players with a relatively long footballing career, and people ate suggesting Grant & Mourinho? That's a bit too much IMO.

In terms if who will set the pool of sheep, I was hoping that @Skizzo would go with an outside party to set the pool rather than the competing managers. I feel like that is the fairest way to approach this?

No. Sheep are sheep for a reason.

Not how we did it last time.

I still think someone may have already picked yer boy in the first round. So, it could be a case of "player already picked" rather than the pair of you blocking each other.

Picking said boy in the first round is pretty obvious too, as a half clever move: Get the keeper sorted right away, and an absolute star of a keeper at that. It's not inconceivable.

Aye, the keepr did jump out as a decent bet when I studied the criteria.

The issue with that is keepers don't count for much in drafts do they?

They haven't so far, but the tide might be shifting. A bunch of regular voters/contributors have said they're going to start weighting the quality of the keepers more, and Sajeev gave Skizzo and I a crucial vote vs EAP in the last draft because he had Given as keeper

Grant never played senior football, I think. So, he isn't eligible, I reckon.

Is there a record for most sheep in one round?
Last time we had 6 sheep after the Messi feck-up. That was by far the most.

If that counts as naming unpicked players for future rounds, I'll delete it, but I guess they aren't really names anyone wouldn't think of anyway :nervous:

What about Fergie? He'd be a good sheep. Or Busby?
