Plenty of firearms there, mate. Especially if you include Northern Ireland. What you have in place are very strict controls.
There are firearms but they are still outlawed (pistols etc post Dunblane). To knowledge the only people allowed to own semi automatics are police. Realistically, owning a gun here is v v difficult (in England not sure about NI).

The fact is outlawing has made it a lot safer (just don't mention knife crime or cyclist deaths in London though). There have been 3 shooting fatalities in England and Wales in the period from 2000-2011.

The rules in NI are fairly similar to Canada. But that's the point; the US shows us what an absence of controls will bring, and as we return to baross' point, why it would seem absurd to require training to use a jet ski but not a gun.

Knife crime isn't even that bad, you're more likely to get stabbed to death in the US than you are here, and do you mean police shootings? I think there's been more than three.

I'm sure, because I live in a country with strong firearm controls in place, a comparable saturation of guns among the general population and far fewer incidents of gun violence.
And far too many differences (confounding variables) in relation to the USA (other than strong firearm training) to be sure about that.

To name just a couple of obvious ones, you have a lot less social/economic inequality and much more effective (as in far reaching) health services (which I presume extends to mental health). It just looks a quieter and saner country, if this makes any sense.

I can't imagine how forceful training would help any but a few of these dramatic situations we hear about. Heck, not too long ago we just saw a video of a 9 year old girl killing her instructor while being trained. The idiocy of this shows the problem is far deeper.

Need I remind you about that bird you winged? ;)

The shooting disciplines have competitions much like the martial arts. Realistically, modern practitioners experience similar adrenaline rushes from competition no matter what it is. Concentration and keeping your form is paramount to success whether your art is kung fu, bullseye, hunting, whatever.
Heh. I was young and stupid and had actually been given some decent training on gun safety. Which went out the window once my adrenaline dumped. Which is my point really. There's a world of difference between giving someone compulsory training on safe use of guns (the proposal here) and actively competing in a martial art, when it comes to preparing them to deal with high stress situations.

As it turned out, the safest thing of all would have been not letting me have access to the gun in the first place!

It is easy to get a shotgun in the UK. Apply for a license to shoot for sport. Get interviewed by the police and show them you have sensible and secure storage for it.

Guys, I don't mean to seem like a dick but can we stick to the OP and debate guns in the other thread?

I grabbed that tidbit from Wiki on my commute, so maybe? Not sure. Knife crime is something we need to improve on, imo. there was a horrible period in 2013 where we had like 15 teenage knife deaths from January to July.

The gunman who killed these people today fired 8 shots in a couple of seconds, with a gun concealed on his person until the last moment. Try doing that with a shotgun.

Yep my mate has a shot gun. He has to have fortnightly liaisons with the police, and he has to log it's use. It's stringent but deservedly so.

I don't disagree with any of that, mate. Keep in mind that there is theoretical training and practical training. One needs the theory before the practice. That's how I was trained and it seems effective. Most trainers here wouldn't allow someone that young to experience practical training.

Training requirements are just one element of effective gun control.

I use too many brackets, don't I?

I've been trying to find a way to deal with this problem for years. I started putting some expressions between "-" - to differentiate - but that just disguises the problem, it doesn't solve it. And it only works because Plechazunga is no longer around here, as I'm sure they are intended for different purposes - though I wouldn't know which.

I think some debate about gun control is bound to occur. There's not much to say about the OP. Horrible tragedy, possibly hard to avoid given the environment. Certainly hasn't been done before.

I don't disagree with your point. There was that guy in Cumbria who went on a rampage a few years ago though. He killed 12 I think with legally obtained shotguns and a rifle? British style gun control keeps the weapons out of the hands of most of the people inclined to do such things anyway.

If your subordinate clause begins with 'which', then a comma will be sufficient.

So, a jet ski, like any motorized watercraft can be very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing (consider where a jet ski is typically used, i.e. near crowded beaches and around other craft). You may not know but in Canada and the US, many people feel that they can operate watercraft with no experience or training (the same holds true for guns). Like cars and the road, there are accepted rules and behaviors for boats and waterways that users must abide and be responsible for (many people feel it is ok to drink and operate watercraft, for example).

barros is arguing that his government requires some measure of training/licencing to operate something as simple as a jet ski, so why not do the same for firearms?*

*states that allow concealed carry typically require applicants to take a couple of courses. New Jersey, where barros lives does not issue these permits so there is no training requirement at all, hence his concern.
Last time i checked, the jetski wasn't invented to kill things though.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree pal. I just can't think of any reason why a country wouldnt adopt the UK/England's way of gun control. The benefits of banning far out weigh the detriments.

Not really an either/or argument is it? Obviously it would be better if guns were banned but while they're not it makes sense to train people properly and to insist on strict controls.

Don't want to interrupt a stimulating debate about jetskis vs firearms, but here's a piece about the gunman.

The Roanoke Times reported that he had a troubled time at the station, suing them for damages in 2014 alleging he had been discriminated against at work.

The paper said he named "most of the WDBJ staff in his complaint" which was dismissed by a judge in 2014. He appears to have been unemployed at the time of the shooting.

Questions have been raised over Williams's mental health, with Virginia's governor Terry McAuliffe saying "there are certain people who should not be entitled to a firearm."

Journalist Heather Myers, who works at the SD6 station in San Diego, wrote on Twitter that her news director had "hired and fired" Williams in 2000 in Florida.

"Fired for bizarre behavior and threatening employees," she wrote.

Jeff Marks,WDBJ7 station manager, told the Guardian that Williams was “an unhappy man” who was difficult to work with and quick to take offence.

“Eventually after many incidents of his anger coming to the fore, we dismissed him. And he did not take that well, we had to call the police to escort him from the building," he said.

Why train? Again look at the UK as an example of how to deal with a problem effectively.
Obviously the UK is a better example. Realistically that isn't going to happen in America though, in which case being trained to use guns as safely as possible is a definite improvement.

With my semi-automatic shotgun? Pump gun or over-under barrel? Do you realize a shotgun is a terrible gun if someone uses buck shells and if they cut the barrels to conceal? I can load 5 shells on my shotguns besides the over-under.

So this guy goes out and buys a gun, loads it full of live ammo, gets in his car and drives to the location and until he pulls the trigger he's yet to commit a crime.

All the while half the country will tell you that the law must not change.

Um. No. We're talking about Uk law. Which would prevent you from owning the penis extension you just described.

You're having a shocker in this thread.

I think another problem is the "celebrity killer"status that this shooters get..For some of this deranged young men with nothing noteworthy in their lives, that feeling of having that much power and popularity drives them to pull this stunts..He could have killed this people any where else..but he had to do it on live tv, just like the other guy had to do it specifically in a church, and the other in a primary school..Because that garners the most attention..A question here is why, and how can we change that mentality?

Don't think you can. You'd either have to get rid of their need for attention or their ability to get it through these acts, neither of which is really possible.

We can't, but if they adopt the 30 days waiting plus the criminal background check like in New Jersey then we may have less crime.

Many will argue that not reporting it will curb the trend. I disagree though, based on my local police and media blackout on reporting suicides on the subway/underground and commuter train tracks as plenty of people still go out like that.

Yeah the idea with that approach is that you'll cool your jets during the waiting period. It probably works most of the time but it's impossible to tell, really.

Yes, been saying that for years on here. Implementing storage requirements would save hundreds of not thousands of American lives each year.
Though I don't have firearms, I fully understand and respect those who have a culture where they use rifles and guns for sport and even those who use semi-automatic weapons in gun ranges for target shootings.

Have your fun...but keep these weapons controlled.

But when you see the NRA being against background checks, you must question their motives.
