Unless there is a massive swing one way or the other Local elections will have little or no impact on Westminster, they only really count for local issues that's why turn out is traditionally low.
If there is a massive swing and as a result lots of councils change hands, then that might get Westminster politicians thinking a bit about their own positions and doing their 'calculations'.

The Tories will ditch Boris when they feel the time is right, not before; he has probably got one more 'banana-skin' left in his 'I'm the PM, get me out of here' locker.

Looks like the Tories will do better than expected. What a finished country.

Yeah. A few flips for Labour but also a few flips for the Conservatives. Some Lib Dem and Green gains too. The Conservatives are the only proper right wing option in the UK. The left is split between Labour, Lib Dem, Green, SNP. Makes it easier in a first passed the post system for the Tories.

Looks like Labour have perhaps not quite managed to get the gains they desired outside of London. Which is pretty worrysome from their perspective.

Yeah it's really not surprising at all. I fully expect Labour to lose the next general election as well. The absolute pointlessness of Starmer and his "electability"
It's a very difficult job since the Labour brand is pretty toxic to some and we have a right wing media.

I'm sure the snark and backbiting is helping

I didn't expect the Lib Dems to gain more seats than Labour. The Greens and Libs together are heading towards somewhere near double the Labour gains.

I'm not sure how widespread it was but there were some Lib Dem/Green pacts.

Yeah not a great sign. It shows the Tories will walk it if they get rid of Boris.

There's a long way to go though and the cost of living crisis isn't going to get better any time soon. That and climate change should be an open goal for ambitious progressive policy, i fear we'll continue with bland though.

The Labour manifesto in Lewisham was tragic compared to the Lib Dem one (which was the best). Objectively speaking the Tories was better too, but feck ever voting for those cnuts.

UK is doomed to an eternity with cnuts like the russian backed Boris in charge for ever.
If I lived in the UK I would try and get as far away as possible from that country.

Most likely.

Also, he has not moved the conversation to benefit Labour voters in that time as part of his "strategy". So there has been no benefit there.

Overall though the Conservatives have lost a good number of seats in these local elections.

Looks like the Conservatives can do no wrong whilst actually doing a lot wrong!

No way are Labour getting back in power any time soon.

Tories have lied broken rules broken laws and still they will win the next election.

Same. Not speaking another language and having a job that relies on communication (and no degree to fall back on) makes things extremely challenging.

The country is so in the tory pocket that the type of opposition needs to be questioned. I don't know whether Tony Blair 2.0 is the answer but it's the only one that's worked in living memory.

Like it or not Britain simply isn't going to be socialist.

Gove or Wallace most likely would be my guess. They don't need to be excellent candidates to walk it they just need to push the usual Tory lines.

What do labour have to do?

Under Corbyn it was obvious, they needed to get closer to the centre. Starmer presumably has achieved that and yet they're still seemingly getting nowhere.

It's like the UK is addicted to voting Tory no matter how much harm it causes.

Bit of charisma and vision would help.

Come to Singapore, everyone speaks English.
Apologies as this is off-topic but do you see much of the sky in Singapore?

I had a lecturer who said he was in Singapore for 3 years and hardly ever saw the sky because of pollution. Curious to know if he's full of it or not.

You sure he wasn't talking about Hong Kong? Pollution doesn't seem that bad, or not visibly so, here. I think occasionally they burn some crops in one of the neighbouring Indonesian islands and the smoke wafts over, but it's fine here. Not like Beijing for smog or the white outs in Hong Kong. There's no real industry here, so not like we have factories or loads of power stations belching out fumes.

He definitely said Singapore, but he lived there quite a number of years ago. Maybe it was an issue but its gotten better.

Or maybe he meant Hong Kong. Although it'd be weird if he forgot where he lived.

Anyway, thanks!

I think moving away from London would be a big step in the right direction. Labour haven't had a non-London based leader since Brown.

Bringing Burnham into the fold would be the obvious choice. He's got mass appeal and could reach former labour/sceptical voters.

Personally I like Kier, but everything about him suggests "brains behind the operation" rather than face-of.

Maybe it was different years ago, but certainly glad it isn't like that now. There's actually a reasonable amount of greenery for a city-state, albeit it is pretty built up.

I would love to see how she answers actual proper questions under scrutiny, that would be her downfall.
She'll be in a debate with Starmer who already has lots of 4K video evidence of him saying one thing and then the exact opposite within hours or days. 'They're all as bad as each other' reigns supreme, Tories win (regardless of who is leader).
