Xherdan Shaqiri | Stoke player signs for Liverpool

Whoscored's rating is a comprehensive and unbiased statistics index, if you want to discredit it for a particular player you need a very concrete tactical explanation for that imho.

The whoscored centre back pairing for the Premier League team of the season was Tomkins and Mustafi.

We dont need any more second rate passengers in the team, do not want. He couldnt make it at any of the clubs hes been at previously and hes far too inconsistent to be considered a regular for us.

We'll spend a fortune on ripped shirts with Shaw and Shaqiri in the team.

I agree we do need better quality for the starting 11. But he would be ok squad player. Better RW than Mata imo. And cheap.

Like a player who needs things to go through him throughout a match. Better suited to a smaller team as there are less number of players who can make things happen. lacks consistency. Good player on his day.

What does he do well on a consistent basis?

His qualities:

  • Good dribbler
  • Creates chances
  • Good crosser
  • Good at set-pieces
  • Can score outrageous goals
  • Strong
etc.

Obvisouly its harder to these things consistently in a side which is fighting against relegation, but he has shown enough when I've seen him for me to think he's good enough for Manchester United.

Unsure what he's done at Stoke to say he's any better than he was an Inter or Bayern.

Thauvin is basically a taller version of Shaqiri lets get him.

Shaqiri is a bargain for that price. But we already have to many squad players. What we need is world class player for our first eleven.

Seems like Leicester would make the most sense. Mahrez is presumably leaving and they need creativity and long-passing and shooting between their solid CMs (Ndidi, Iborra, Silva) and their good finishers up top (Vardy, Iheanacho) but Gray and Albrighton are just decent width. They need at least one very creative type and maybe Shaqiri can peak as a sort of middle-class Payet type.

As for him coming here, I think it only makes sense as backup RW if Mata and Martial leave and we do sign Bale or another RW, but I'm not sure Shaqiri is mature enough to be a squad guy.

-----------Lukaku(Rashford)---------
Sanchez(Lingard)------Bale(Shaqiri)

makes sense, and while people might want another star for rotation I do think Rashford has the goods to get there. But we have a creative, left-footed #10/RW who doesn't have great pace in Mata and he seems to not complain about being first choice and while Shaqiri should be entering his prime and Mata leaving his, Mata is still better at the moment.

Jesus, he is not a top 4 signing and any top four team signing him will be wasting their money. He also definitely seems like the type of player who will need to play every week to stay fit.

He said consistent, not now and then.

Or are you saying he did all those things consistently last season? (presumably with stats/facts to back it up)?

You're comparing a made up rating system (which puts De Gea as one of our worst performing players) to hard facts. To put it another way compared to our squad, only Lukaku and Martial scored more PL goals than Shaqiri. Only Sanchez created more chances per game and only Pogba had more assists. I agree we should be looking for better though if we actually intend to use the right hand side of the pitch.

The whoscored centre back pairing for the Premier League team of the season was Tomkins and Mustafi.

Whoscored's rating system is the most flawed for GKs, CBs and players like Busquets. It works quite well for players like Shaqiri though.

ok.

Sure he'd do a bit better at United given players around him but think he's an average/ok player whose level is bottom half of the PL. We've got plenty of average players - we need top quality, even if expensive.

I predict if he signs for a club like Liverpool many here will be wishing we got him, like Mane.

He's fine for a Leicester or West Ham but not the type of player we need of we are to kick on and be a legit threat in the league and UCL.

Wasnt good enough for Inter or Bayern why would he be good enough for us?

Not to be that guy, but Pogba wasnt good enough for us, went to Juve, then we paid through the nose for him. Salah wasnt good enough for chelsea, now look at him. Lukaku wasnt good enough for chelsea, we paid 75 mil for him.

Was he not good enough, or was it that he didnt fit the tactical layout of the squad? Would he fit ours? forget the name, forget the money, will he make us better fitting in to the RW for us? Will he do better having a better class of player around him?

At 12 mil(if thats the right number), he could be a steal, or he could be an inexpensive flop thats sold on easy. Not much to lose.

Wait wait wait. What's happened here? Are we linked to this guy?

No we are. I haven’t seen United linked.

For those asking, his buy-out clause is rumoured to be somewhere in the region of £12-14 million because Stoke have been relegated.

Don't see why anyone wouldn't take a punt at that price. Good squad option for the bigger clubs. And good player for the rest.

We moan about the squad having crap players, then advocate for signing Shaqiri to improve the quality of the squad. FFS.

He was no doubt very promising when he was at Basel, but it’s been all downhill since then. A good goal here and there does not make a useful player.

Imagine finally selling Fellaini, then go ahead and buy Shaqiri and Arnautovic for the full Stoke makeover.

I guess he could be a useful player, probably more so than Mata and for the price quoted I'm sort of onboard, but we then have to offload Mata and sign another right winger that is actually world class. Seems weird to sign a backup before we have a starter. This guy surely isn't the answer

Not sure how thrilled I'd be at him being first change. We need to replace Phil's role in addition to this.
We are thoroughly fecked if he's being bought for that.

If Liverpool go for him as an alternative to Fakir, then I'm delighted.

He was linked with Liverpool in addition to Fekir. Their bench options are fairly average so they need to bring in some decent squad players too.

Is he an upgrade on what we have currently? Yes.
Are we definitely going to sign another RW this summer if not him? No.
Does he cost jack sh*t? No.

Think he'd need to have an amazing world cup though to get us interested.

Would be a good squad-purchase for Liverpool if the release clause rumor is true.
They need some backup options up front that are value for money since their first team desperately needs heavy investment at the GK position and if possible a top class CB to pair with VvD.
