BBC are saying he is going to get a "massive" wage increase. I thought we were expected to pay him the same as he's already getting in Germany?

I must say, his wages are a bit concerning as well. Somehow we are giving a 31 year old a 3 year contract with a pay rise with bumper wages. I can see us repeating some of the same mistakes we made with Falcao, honestly.

This deal is just a bit 'meh'.
Think of the wages we're clearing from our books with RVP, Falcao, and Nani.

Schweinsteiger knows how to win, has lots to offer and can still see this move as a challenge. The squad is extremely young and could do with an older head that knows how to behave when the going gets tough; something that will be crucial if we are to challenge for trophies at the business end of the season. Criticism of this move seems more like criticism for criticism sake. The positives far outweigh any negatives.
Totally. I think RSU has hit the nail on the head.
We could sign Messi next summer and I guarantee you some people will find something to complain about.

People complain about signing a 30 year old for 14 mil. But id bet they would be over the moon if we bought a 30 year old Ronaldo fir 100 mil

There are no negatives to this transfer whatsoever imo. Just the man lining up on the pitch is going to give the players/fans a massive lift alone.

He played well in last years World Cup Final, had a good game in the Champions League Final at Wembley two years ago, but can he do it on a cold Tuesday night at Stoke?

Best to stay away from this pessimistic thread. Suddenly his wages are too high. People expecting Schweinsteiger to play for 80.000/week or what? Van Persie gets higher wages at Fenerbahce FFS.

Yes, because he's best his behind him. How can we call ourselves a top club when we only rely on leftovers from other top clubs?
Because we aren't just relying on 'leftovers'. We've signed one of the most exciting young talents out there in Memphis, same with Shaw last year. I see nothing wrong with signing an experienced world class player. Some might call that Balance in the squad.

Watch the WC final and repeat the part with the knackered midfielder.
This guy has the heart and attitude we've been missing for a while. Determination is what makes the difference. He will never lay down and roll over for any opponent. On top of that he'll drag the knackered players over the finishing line.
I hated him for Bayern because of all these attributes. I'd love him if he showed a fraction of his heart and willpower for us.
Why do people keep saying he was the best player at the world cup? ?He wasn't even in the running.

I saw him play against Dortmund in the cup around May time. He played less than 45 minutes (came on towards the end and played 30 mins of extra time as well) he was out of breath and everything towards the end. Completely knackered. Didn't even take a penalty.

Hmmm seems to be a quick fix.
Which is what we want, no? Obviously we need a longer term solution as well (Schneiderlin), but for the price and the quality he brings, Schweinsteiger seems a no-brainer.

about £140k. High but basically nothing with the £600k's worth of wages we've cleared out with Nani, RVP and Falcao

Rumour is he will earn about €10m per year, which is just under €200k pw I believe.

People often forget the wages, which put a far greater dent in the coffers than most transfer fees these days.

And the price is supposed to be 13m€ not pound.

Swap "Falcao" for "Schweinsteiger" in that post and it would be a carbon copy of loads of posts at about this time last summer. Hence the concern for some of us.
Come on mate, that's complete rubbish. Most people had concerns that Falcao would recover from his injury, plus it was his 2nd serious injury of the same type. His signing was a big gamble, which everyone knew (hence being on loan). Schweinsteiger is a completely different kettle of fish.

No one can predict how long Schweinsteiger can go on for. Even at the end of his contract, Giggs would probably take over from LVG and be in no rush to retire him if he's still performing. Schweinsteiger (depending on how we use him) could have a good 5+ years left in him. Much of it comes down to luck but his experience will be great.

People said the same about Falcao, don't get me wrong, signing Bastian for a small sum is great, but we shouldn't ignore the fact that he isn't at the level he used to be, his age has nothing to do with it - people are mostly cautious about his form and they have every right to be after the whole Radamel debacle, all we need to do now is sign Schneiderlin (assuming we have already signed Schweinsteiger) sign a CB and a ST and we're good.

Got to admit though, the thought of this team starting at home to Tottenham, on a gloriously sunny Saturday lunchtime, does have me looking forward to the season ahead:

------------Valdes-------

Darmian-----Smalling---Rojo----Shaw

----------------Carrick---------------

-------Schweinsteiger-------Herrera-------

Di Maria-------Rooney-----------Depay

With Mata, Blind, Fellaini, Young, Valencia, Januzaj, Jones, Wilson and perhaps even Ramos and Schneiderlin all competing for places as well.

I think you can safely call that 'An embarrassment of riches'.

Makalele and Mattheus played will into their mid 30's at the top. The German league also is not as competitive or physical as the premier league so it's possible that No.6 type players have more longevity coming from there. Signing a top German for the first time at this club can only be a good thing because with Schweini being here hopefully then it will make it more attractive for other Germans to follow. Schweini didn't play that much last season so might be fresh and ready to go. It'd definitely a risk worth taking

How many time last season were people complaining that we had no leader on the pitch? No one dictating the attack or marshalling the defence? No one administering bollockings? No one stopping the heads dropping?

Schweinsteiger can offer us that in spades. He has the ability to lead by example and experience.

There's a flight leaving Munich for Manchester at 3:40pm (German time).
Quite frankly I'd be shocked and disillusioned at the entire transfer muppet process if he wasn't on it.

It was at least between him and Boateng for best player in the World Cup final itself. Don´t worry he´ll be fit. Ana Ivanovic willl chase him around with a frying pan for the next four weeks yelling Manchester, I liked Munich. Best shape of his life.

Well he would be 28 then, slight signs of decline, and probably wouldn't be as good without Neymar or Suarez running in behind. :p

For Falcao I was convinced that his injury was behind him and I was right, but at no point I thought that he would be that bad. Now that is true for all transfers a player can completely flop for a myriad of reasons such as not adapting to the team, the coaching, the league, lacking confidence, etc...

If his injury hasn't affected him, then yes of course it's a no brainer.
Maybe BM are offloading him as they know he's crocked. Shades of Hargreaves?
To be fair we do love buying crocked players.

Yep, I know.

It's a considerable payment all inclusive for a player of his age. Wages and transfer fee alone its looking like €30-40m. I'm sure there are other fee's of course as well, agent fees, lawyers etc etc.

We desperately do need his experience though and that really isn't debatable.

I'm very much entrenched in the wait in see camp with Bastian, I don't for a second doubt his quality, I do have reservations of his age / fitness and being able to cope in a faster paced and far more physically demanding PL.

I can't help but shake the feeling it is reminiscent of the Falcao signing. Hopefully this time it pays off!

We are signing a player who is something like a national treasure, do you expect us to pay him "Carrick money"?

He came from a two week lasting flu... Took him a while to shake that off...

He will be the first to wear gloves when it gets cold.

He had the 5th penalty... and was not needed anymore. But give the pens to others...

He had the most heroic performance in the WC final and the highest distance covered. A very good match against the US and Brazil. Until the France match it was timesharing between him and Khedira.

Im so excited and optimistic at the moment. Schweinsteiger is class, he adds that extra balance witj his work rate, tactical nouse but also he creates chances in a different way in long balls, something we lacked last season. And ofcourse he has tons of experience. Im not on the Mata brigade, a midfield of Carrick, Herrera, Schweini could dominate every team in the PL.
