Spurs have only Kane,Carroll and Mason homegrown.
Only Kane has been a key player from that lot.
I think some media have forgotten about how many of that team is homegrown as you say. What they have done well is identify targets and got them cheaply. There again Spurs don't go around bragging about how much money they have. We only have ourselves for being taken to the cleaners all the time.

We need to be a machine winning hated team again, and I agree, allot of people put the class of 92 up there like they filled the entire squad with youth players, its not has if the entire spine was full of the class of 92
It was Gary Neville, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Butt didn't always play and Phil was a fill in. They had 6 other top drawer players in that team as you say in the really important postions , right down the spine of the team.

Can we have a new thread if there's a good new interview or atleast a threadmark? Takes a while to trawl through the roundabout discussion to search the post in question

Sums it up nicely. Two of Fergie's three great sides were composed largely of imported players (often at great expense) and even 99 had a core of expensive imports (Cole, Yorke, Stam, as well as older buys like Keane). The 94 and 99 sides also had a real hard streak (verging on thuggish with 94). And, paraphrasing his biographer's words (McIlvany), Fergie was never one to pass a pile of firewood without throwing a lighted match on it. But, no, we're the morally superior nice guys who rely on homegrown players and for whom winning is incidental. No trophy winning machines like Mourinho please, we need someone like that nice David Moyes again.
I disagree slightly with the idea that United regularly spent huge sums before the Glazers, especially not during the PLC years.

Yes they certainly broke the transfer record a few times (Pallister, Keane, Cole, Veron and Ferdinand if I'm right), but given they were the biggest club in England from 1991 (when the club went public) to 2005 (when the Glazers bought it), it's not surprising they broke the record. It's not as if they were breaking it every year, as you might expect the biggest and richest club in the country to do. Plus Ferguson's net spend was very low; aside from that handful of big-money signings he didn't buy that many players, and most of the first title-winning team were incredible bargains (Cantona, Schmeichel, Irwin, Bruce, Kanchelskis, Sharpe) rather than big-money buys.

That said, what the original poster said was spot on. There was no great commitment to youth, apart from that one summer in '95. Ferguson bought all the key players bar Giggs in his first successful team (the 92-94 one) and the 98-99 season was preceded by what, for United, was a big-spending summer (Yorke, Cole and Blomqvist coming in).

Aside from the amazing Beckham/Scholes/Nevilles/Butt/Giggs crop, we hardly promoted any youngsters. Who else came through to establish themselves under Fergie? O'Shea, Brown, Evans and Fletcher are the only ones that spring to mind. When you think of it like that, United's commitment to youth under Ferguson wasn't that great at all.

Actually I find it slightly disrespectul how this lot won everything for United, when I think they will find the other players were pretty important in everything.

That's it...He is going to Everton! Think about it ..Martinez is a dead man walking and with their new investor coming in, Mourinho probably thinks he is building the new Chelsea and they also play in blue!

And I would say only beckham scholes and giggs were special talents, the club under ferguson was all about winning at all costs

If he wants to be at a place where he's truly wanted, then it isn't here is it?

Fans want him, board is divided. Depends what really matters to him.
Most fans want him. The board not wanting him isn't at a place that truly want him though is it? It is a dig at Chelsea as well as at United. Chelsea fans love him, but what does that mean? Do you think he'd go back?

I spoke to (gasp) a real life friend, and knowledgeable United fan, last night. He is in favour of LVG getting another year - firstly because he thinks LVG has "not done that bad considering all the injuries" and secondly because the main available alternative (Jose) doesn't play good football either. He said a year is a long time in football and better options may be available in another year's time.

All reasonable points to be honest and its interesting to hear what the wider (non-caf) world is thinking.
Every single "real life" United fan that I know wants him kicked out.

Yeh Gary Neville is our best RB ever but sure no talent...
Neville himself would say he wasn't the most talented, it was determination to better himself that got him to his peak. One could say determination is his talent but in footballing terms he was not a talent on a level with giggs, scholes and becks

When questioned about United:
http://www.marca.com/futbol/2016/04...html#js-comentar-5707ca4046163fc12f8b4576-div

"I don't want to talk about it. There are many different scenarios, some more likely than others. Now that I'm not working, I read the papers alot, contrary to what I do when I'm managing, I don't read a single word printed on the press.

I don't read newspapers nor I check the Internet, nothing at all. It's too easy to lie, make things up, and take words out of context... That's the world we live in and we have to adapt to it. What I can guarantee now is that when I get back to work, I'll do the same I did before: I won't read anything".

PS: He denied the Syria job.

I just think the us fans aren't really clued up with this judging a manager thing. We are not use to it and it shows when we would rather have Pochentino over Mourinho. It would be the equivalent of picking Andy Cole over Ruud Van Nistelrooy because Ruud doesn't score outside the box and punches young players.

Get the world class manger. The preference for attacking football and brining through youth are the most stupidest of arguments. We've never been a club reneowed for player football like Barca (yes we attack and are entertaining) as in total football and the last developed youth we brought through from the academy was Welbeck and Cleverley. Give it a rest.

Yet even Becks like Ronaldo puts hours in practicing their skills. You wonder how much work kids now want to put in for the rewards?

His technical game was way behind those players but that doesn't mean that he didn't know how to play his role perfectly and by my definition that's talent. If he's our best ever RB he certainly had talent, because I could work as hard as I like and im never achieving that.

Both Rodgers and Martinez messed up the clubs they were in (excluding Swansea for both I suppose). Pochettino took Southampton to a new level and now at Spurs also he seems to have done a good job there. That too he doesn't seem to have had a lot of spending too. Most of his buys were under 10m and under the radar players in both clubs too. I think it's safe to say that he actually knows what he is doing in all areas, unlike Rodgers and Martinez.
Koeman did better.
Edit: I guess my point is maybe he took that Southampton team where they should be: mid table.

I think he has done well with Spurs but I wouldn't call his work exceptional and, more importantly, there is every chance he will not be able to replicate it. There have been many managers in the EPL who have had one a very good season; the majority never managed to replicate it. So until he does, I reserve my judgement.

Rashford, lingaard, tfm, varela, cbj are exciting.

But they're not good enough for everton, let alone top 4 and spurs.

It's easy to play youth without winning, any morons can pick a team full of youth, any youth can be lucky enough to play in our current squad, you just have to be fit and unknown.

None of them are a revelation, the only thinf they reveal is thst they're not useless.

I don't think there's any agreement whatsoever with Mourinho as yet. I think he's just trying to talk his way into the job.

This is my nightmare... to root or not root?

We get 4th and keep LVG or no CL and get Jose...

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...tball-news/mourinho-man-utd-van-gaal-11159282

Jose Mourinho is convinced he will become the next Manchester United manager - unless Louis van Gaal seals Champions League qualification.

Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, is understood to have touched base with United executive vice-chairman earlier this week to seek clarification over developments on the managerial situation at Old Trafford.

M.E.N. Sport understands Mourinho is 'satisfied' with the latest updates and, while he has not been guaranteed the United job, he believes he will inherit the position he was overlooked for in 2013.

Mourinho was rattled at the weekend over Van Gaal's admission he helped prepare the club's pre-season tour schedule in China and reports he is working on deals for potential signings in the summer transfer window.

United's successive league wins against City and Everton have also caused the Portuguese consternation as the club attempts to avoid top four failure for the second time in three seasons.

Jose Mourinho is still optimistic about becoming Man Utd manager but Louis van Gaal could still scupper his hopes in the Premier League.

It is also understood Mendes has been told Van Gaal's contract includes a fourth place clause, which means United can dismiss the Dutchman without paying him full compensation if he fails to clinch a Champions League qualifying spot.

David Moyes' contract included a similar clause, which was why he did not receive the five years' worth of salary left on his deal when United dismissed the Scot two years ago.

A clause would partly explain why United have not sacked Van Gaal, despite a clamour from supporters.

The team is one point behind fourth-placed City with seven games remaining, starting with Sunday's trip to Tottenham, where United have not lost in 15 years.

Supporters expected United to kick on after scraping a top four berth last season. The club spent £106.9m in the summer on reinforcements, however United are 16 points behind league leaders Leicester and were jettisoned from the Champions League at the group stage.

The club contacted Mendes the day after their humiliating Europa League defeat to Midtjylland last month to receive assurances the Portuguese had no intention of re-joining Internazionale, whom he coached to 2010 Champions League glory.

Mourinho, who trounced Ryan Giggs in local polls among fanzines and on the M.E.N. website on who should become the next United manager, was confident of seeing off the Welshman to replace Van Gaal as early as last month, despite several of Giggs’ former teammates championing his credentials to manage United.

On Friday, Mourinho suggested his next role could be at United after insisting he's only looking for a tough job in a hard league.

Mourinho, who was speaking at a sponsorship event in Portugal, said: "I can almost guarantee you that I’ll be back working this summer. I’ve got good offers on the table."

I wasn't trying to make out we did a PSG - many of our rivals spent big to much less effect (Liverpool in particular, also Leeds and Newcastle), but rather that we have generally spent big in the context of domestic rivals (I emphasise domestic - we never spent like Italian clubs in the 80s and 90s or Real Madrid in the galactico era). This also predates Fergie - United spent big under Big Ron and Sexton as well. The basic point is that our success was to a large extent based on spending power (for example, in 98 we bought one of Spurs' best players as a squad option) allied to very good scouting. However, some (younger?) fans seem to have been blinded a bit by the Class of 92 legend, and putting it together with the even more famous team of the 50s, got a misguided view of United's history.

So lets look at the sources that have claimed this is happening-
  • BBC (they dont put there neck on the line for anything)
  • EL pais (Very reliable)
  • Le10 sport (Again reliable, have reported falcao to us and martial to us before any english media knew)
  • Di marzio (Got darmian right, does get somethings wrong, more right than wrong though, got conte to chelsea right months ago)
  • Ballague (Has contacts in the spanish media, hasnt put his name on the line, said mou's friends reckon it)
  • Custis (Got the neymar interest spot on, maybe has some briefing from woody or someone high up at united)
  • Calderon (Well, he says madrid wanted him, but he goes to united. He knew abt ronaldo deal, adm, kaka etc. Former madrid president)
  • Torro rosso (very well connected and respected journalist)
  • ESPN
  • Gregory Ionnidis (Sports lawyer and united fan, hasnt said it directly but has implied it many times like with conte to chelsea months ago, may not be considered the best source on transfers, but he advices many footballers and is bound to have contacts, also appears regularly on SSN/bbc for cases of sports law including evra case and PED cases)
  • Spanish papers including MARCA, AS, el confidencial etc say its done.
  • Inter milan's chief's daughter came out to the media and said the same
  • Red issue (well they have some sources, they have broken stories from dressing room, before they came to eng media)
  • Last space for @Acquire Me just because he put his caf account on the line.
I must have missed some, i dint put english papers in as they seem to be out of the loop, may be woody doesnt like them as they portray him badly. May be woody is keeping his side hush but leaks happen from Mendes side. Those are hell lot of "sources" to say its happening. Right now i am very sure this is happening, unless a miracle happens. I think van gaal will announce he wants to leave if/when we are out of F.A. cup. I dont think the league finish is important, maybe if we finish 3rd?. United are respecting their manager by not confirming a new one, until LVg is gone. That you can say is also disrespecting as there is so much speculation. All in all i would say, barring a miracle, we will have jose mourinho as the next united manager.

That report is bullshit. Moyes had 5 years left so it makes sense to have the clause, LVG has 1.
The British press are the only media outlets that have this nonsense. How to make 5 stories oit of 1
Plus what if we finish 4th and City win the CL. Is qualifying for the playoffs qualify as achieving CL football?

I really don't accept this reasoning. Van Gaal has only one year left on his contract and paying that up would be only a drop in the ocean for Utd.
