Goodness me, this is a free fall!
Not sure which midfielders performed better than him? Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Schneiderlin...no way.
The agenda against this guy....goodness me!

Pardew 'wanted pace'
He's been one of our best performing players over the past 2 years, despite his own team's 'fans' being on his back from day 1.

The same people probably make excuses for the pitiful performances £60m Angel Di Maria put in.

And that just shows you how awful we've been. He really shouldn't be at the club, let alone one of our 'best performing players'.

Then on that basis we should sell everybody who performed worse than him. Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Januzaj, Rooney, Depay, Rojo, Darmian, Jones... get rid of them all this summer.

A fair few of them will go. We can't sell all of them, though. Too much turnover is just as immaterial as keeping them.

Di Maria was due to him not wanting to be here, the fact that it was his first season in the EPL and he was moved from a position where had an immense season in out to the wing. He is 5 times the player Fellaini is. Fellaini shouldn't be anywhere near our first 11, he's a useful player in certain games due to his height and grit, but no-one we should be relying on if we want to be one of the elite again.

Apart from Rooney I bet all the rest will be playing for other clubs within the next couple years, once Jose has had a few transfer windows to overhaul the squad. Can't get rid of them all at once.

I think this forum is extremely harsh towards Fellaini. He was probably one of our top 3 midfielders last season, and contributed in most games he played.

I guess he's just another Evans, Nani, Anderson and the other spacegoats..

Not really. You don't look purely at performance and disregard all other factors. Age, potential, injuries, what you think that player could become all have to be considered. We know with Fellaini that what you see right now is him at his best. For at least six of the players you mentioned I think there's more to come.

Fellaini had a good cup run, and was decent/good towards the end of the season. But i honestly don't know why people keep saying he was one of our better players last season. In that run he had in central midfield after Xmas he was diabolical, for me that should also be taken into consideration when judging his overall performance last year. A few goals in the cup has clouded a lot of peoples opinion i think.

If i never see him in a midfield 2 again i would be fine with him staying, he should be played in a free role behind the striker. Thats his position and the only one i think he is really any good at.

You know Fellaini is a "run" guy around this parts. A run of 2 or 3 games is enough to justify his star quality other than it is ok for him to be terrible. Another run should seal his legendary status this season.

Swear some of our "fans" would rather see Fellaini cost us a goal than actually score one for us.

He's a United player and he's staying. We have worst players in our squad who haven't contributed half as much as him and yet they don't get any flack from our fans. Sad to see.
that's not true in every count

Ay, I've praised Fellaini elsewhere but this argument that he was one of our better midfielders is simply rubbish.

Fellaini gets assessed against his own standards. A bit like Young does. Young will beat a man and over hit a couple of crosses and a select few will storm into his player thread telling us how reliable and impressive he is to have in the side. But he's still been shite, just a little less shite than usual.

Objectively, the likes of Bastian, Herrera and Schneiderlin were better players last season. They didn't play anywhere near well enough, but if you sent an alien down from space to watch them and compare them to Fellaini, said alien would rank Fellaini down towards the bottom. He has had some truly shite games for the club in his time here.

The hate on Fellaini is just sad.

Pretty much every outfield player has been on a bad form.

Atleast Fellaini shows heart.

He was also important for us to reach top 4 the one time afther SAF. He also was also important for winning the FA cup.

Schneiderlin, Herrera and Schweinsteiger were clearly way better than him, and all 3 of them more effective too. Better footballers providing better results. So he could not have been in the top 3. If you don't believe your eyes believe the stats.

Have to disagree Fellaini contributed more than any those 3 last season.

What have the likes of Jones, Young, Depay, Darmian, Schweinsteiger, etc ever done for us? Fellaini has been a comfortably better signing than all of those guys and his performances in the FA Cup this season overshadow anything I've seen those guys do.

Young and Jones have a PL medal, thanks to RVP. Thats it. They've been crap signings and nowhere near worth the wages they're being paid every week.

This is the type of opinion held by many on here about Fellaini that puzzles me. Have i been watching a different player the last 3 years?

Thats a genuine question by the way not being a smart ass, so many people continue to say this or similar that i am genuinely starting to wonder if i am completely wrong about him. I don't hate the guy i actually quite like him, so i don't think bias is clouding my judgement. So i scratch my head and wonder what are others seeing that i'm not.

Fellaini is a decent player when played to his strengths in a free role, he's not pleasing on the eye but he can be effective. He had a good run in the cup last year and played well towards the end of Van Gaals first season. But considering the money that we paid for him and his form over the 3 years i don't know how anyone could say he's been anything other than a disappointment.

Lets be honest for large stretches he has been very poor. Last season after Xmas in central midfield was probably the worst he has been in his time here, honestly some of the worst performances i've seen in a United shirt in over 25 years of watching he was that bad. Now once he was moved further forward his form picked up and he did quite well. But even though he played well and got a few important goals it was still nothing amazing, over the course of the season he wasn't one of our best players.

How were they "way better"? Schweinsteiger has been a woeful signing. Schneiderlin has hardly lit the world on fire here and for some strange reason, Herrera can do no wrong in some of our fans eyes. He hasn't been amazing either.

We've lost games without Fellaini. The big one being the West Ham one where we needed to win to guarantee top 4... We lost, conceding both goals by set pieces... And who was the difference maker in the FA Cup tie?

Fellaini.

I wouldn't say he's been a bad signing. 28m might have been overpaying a little bit but that season we bought him, he was just after coming off a great season with Everton. Getting himself into the Team of the Season alongside the likes of RVP, Suarez, etc. The likes of Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with him back then, infact I remember quite a lot of Arsenal fans buzzing over the potential of signing him...

Even now, I think he's worth 15-20m easily and would probably get games at the likes of Juventus/Napoli/Roma. If he's so bad, why does he always play for Belgium? I guess some fans just don't "get it"... not every midfielder has to be Iniesta. The sooner some fans realise that and appreciate Fellaini's strengths and the balance/difference he makes to the team, the better.

Even when we have Pogba, Schneiderlin and the like, I still think Fellaini will be useful in the big tough games where we play for the 1-0 win. And I reckon Jose will see this too. Like it or not, he's great at defending the set pieces, taking the ball down and getting a goal. He plays with fight too, which some fans criticise him for. I for one, appreciate it when a player isn't afraid to get stuck in and let the opposition know they're there.

If I was a winger crossing the ball in, the one player I'd want in the box would be someone like Fellaini. If I was a defender, the one player I'd hate to mark would be someone like Fellaini. I guess some people here haven't actually played football in real life and don't understand how hard players like him are to defend against.

By ignoring your first part of post (ie United fans prefer seeing Fellaini costing us a goal then actually scoring one for us) then you admit that you went way over the top in that post.

Now lets tackle this post. You can't just dump a couple of random names like that especially since they play in a different role, most have yet to settle down and they aren't paid as a 30m rated player/desperate buy. Also its not as if the players you mentioned do not get their fair share of criticism.

Not to forget that we've been playing crap football for the past 3 years. Moyes and LVG have extinguished any sort of technique and creativity out of the team. Hence why a thug like Fellaini may look as good as other more technical players if not even better. I mean if you take a Navy seal, you put him in a muddy pit against a Neanderthal and you only give them clubs and no armour then the latter would probably do fairly well against the former.

Fellaini is decent as a no 10 in a team that is very direct. He lacks discipline, pace and workrate to play in a deeper role. We cant play that way or else we end up 7th. Its as simple as that

Ronaldo.
Heck, even Carroll is much more efficient with his heading - Fellaini loses awful amount of aerial duels to the guys half his size and he doesn't have the ability to consistently strike the ball powerful and accurately with his head.

If Arsenal or Chelsea wanted him then they would have got him when the release clause was still low. We got him in the last seconds before the transfer market closed down (initially they were rumours that we didn't even registered the player on time) and we paid premium because he was a panic buy

Belgium are the Everton of international football. They are massively overrated and when they need to deliver they tend to fail miserably. Italy literally took them to the cleaners. It was hilarious seeing the boy with a lot of tattoos and the two Afro Neanderthals chasing the ball. It was like watching Robbie Savage playing against Paul Scholes, with the difference that Parolo, Giaccherini and an ageing De Rossi are nowhere near to the ginger prince.

As said Fellaini has his uses as no 10 in a very direct team. I see wisdom in Moyes trying to get him to Sunderland. However we cant play that way. No big team can do that

All of them had more good games.
They really didn't unless you severely overrate their performances and downplay Fellaini's performances.

In truth, there were all varying degrees of crap. Fellaini did turn up and in the important games however and was a key part in winning the cup.

Like I said, I think it's more a case of expectancy. Schweinsteiger was the reason we won at Watford, for example. It isn't particularly memorable, however, because we all know he's capable of a lot, lot more than he demonstrated.

Plus, I think our midfield actually resembled a functional midfield when both he and Schneiderlin played, something I can never say about Fellaini when played from deep.

On the whole I agree with you that they were all varying degrees of shite. I'd like to think that will change as they're all a hell of a lot better than they've shown so far at United, whether it be at Bayern, Bilbao, Everton or Southampton.

Yes he got into the team of the season before he joined us, his fee while high wasn't crazy. But in hindsight considering his fee and what he has given us and contributed so far he was been a poor signing. At Everton the team was set up around him to play to his strengths, he has shown glimpse's of that form and effectiveness here but not much more.

We signed him on the last day of the transfer window, i think it's safe to say if either of Chelsea or Arsenal really wanted him they would have signed him.

Even now, I think he's worth 15-20m easily and would probably get games at the likes of Juventus/Napoli/Roma. If he's so bad, why does he always play for Belgium? First of all i never said he was a bad player, read my post again. He goes through periods of form especially if playing in central midfield where he has been woeful. Overall i think he's a good player in the right set-up.

Secondly when did getting in the Belgium side become a stamp of quality? They are a decent side but hardly amazing, and judging from the Euros he's not even first choice anymore.

Even when we have Pogba, Schneiderlin and the like, I still think Fellaini will be useful in the big tough games where we play for the 1-0 win. And I reckon Jose will see this too. He is but honestly Manchester United shouldn't be playing a guy at no10 because he is great at defending set pieces or gets stuck in. He needs to have more to his game than that. As a squad option maybe thats fine but under Van Gaal he was being played regularly to cover Blinds lack of height.

If I was a winger crossing the ball in, the one player I'd want in the box would be someone like Fellaini. If I was a defender, the one player I'd hate to mark would be someone like Fellaini. I guess some people here haven't actually played football in real life and don't understand how hard players like him are to defend against.
Why does someone who regularly watches football over decades need to have played the game to judge a players talent. What level are we talking about here 5-a-side, amateur, semi-pro, professional?

I have played amateur football and it gives me little or no more insight compared to someone else who hasn't when judging a player. Look at people like Redknapp or Collymore who played professionally and they constantly talk crap.

When you watch a movie can you tell if an actor is good or bad. Do you need to have gone to drama school to judge someone's acting ability. No of course you don't it's the same with football, watch enough football and you get to know a Great/Good/Decent/Bad player when you see one.

On Fellaini's aerial ability how many headed goals has he scored in the last 3 years 3-4? He's dangerous no doubt but his aerial threat is overstated.

Never seen a United player dribble the ball of the pitch so many times in a season. He has his assets but for a United CM he doesn't have the right ones for me.
Decent player, but not good enough for United.

Why do people feel the need to isolate situations to justify Fellaini. First season under Moyes, he could have been amazing were it not be for the broken wrist. Second season for Fellaini, he was the reason why we played well for that "3 game run" and the reason we came 4th. Third season for Fellaini, he is the main reason we won the FA cup. Rubbish.

The guys has been a disappointment. We are talking about a player who should be in his prime, a leader in the centre of the park given his age and PL experience. I don't blame people though. Fellaini produces 4/10 performances for so long that the moment he ups it by 50% to 6/10 he is amazing. Who doesn't like a 50% boost?

He won the fouls committed column.
I rated Fellaini on 2 things:
  • his football, which is rubbish, and
  • the team results when he was playing.
United's results with Fellaini playing are clearly much worse than with Schneiderlin, Herrera and Schweinsteiger. If we consistently play Fellaini and end up losing and drawing more games, then the stats show it's a bad idea to play him.

Oh i hear you mate i made a list of our games and w/d/l ratios with and without him a few months back. It pointed towards United being more likely to win without him, at least last season anyway.
